How would you change Samsung's Instinct s30?

A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Add an accelerometer!
How long have you been saving that joke?
Still, i do think it would be hard to be happy with this when you realise the pre, iphone, or winmo .65 that could have been...
Add some iPhone....
Give it some decent software...
Have atleast one person develop for it.
The problem with these phone companies like samsung or lg is that they release so many phones, all they care about is putting out the product quick and having it sell to those unsuspecting customers.
And its not even their main product!
Samsung= nand chips
Lg= wahers & dryers (etc)
To be honest i just want a little quality in these phones.
Somebody actually bought this?
i bought the unlocked instinct: http://12tb.com/browse/WirelessAccessories/283273011/Samsung-Unlocked-Phones
The ones who baught it would never show up i guess lol.. so engadget remove it
Less dead space on the front (i.e. bigger screen, less rim)
More fluid UI
Android
-android and you have an idea.
make it the omnia hd
everyone hit the negative button on this guy Steve M. he is just hating
Make the bottom back/home/end buttons real. It's kind of redundant making touch-sensitive buttons on a touchscreen phone.
ZUNEHDRULEZZZ!!!
ok seriously, who really needs this ooomnia when u can already have a superior ZuneHD? this is madness.
matt: Is...is that possible?
Dude the zune hd is gonna flop like a bad apple.
Do you realize its an ipod touch with lower specs and less build quality?
(by specs i mean the screen resolution, at this point.)
Unless its half the price, honestly no one is gonna buy it,
and then your left without a developer base like android or the pre.
Maybe if you think for yourself microsoft, we could push some good products out yeah?
LOL at the zune HD being a lower spec'd ipod touch.
The iphone AND ipod touch are both low specd anyway... lawl at the screen res and the 2mp camera
@Mizzike
Yet they still run the worlds most advanced mobile software flawlessly
(in most cases)
Did i mention that the ipod touch comes with 50,000 apps?
Thats a plus over microsofts... zero at this point.
@ShirkPower
yeah 50,000 apps of suck.
It's a proven fact that 90% of those hailed billion apps downloaded are sitting on people's iCrappityCrapCrap having been used once or twice, or simply deleted.
- Sorry your apps store full of crap is not a great selling point.
@shirkpower 50,000 apps only? How many again does WM, BB or the old Palm OS software each have right now?
On topic, yeah Andriod based OS would be nice on this, plus wifi, and a better Samsung camera on it.
maybe because the zunehd isnt a phone you dickhead
Turn it into a pre
make it not exist
You. Read. My. Mind.
I wouldn't take it for free it has nothing I want. I would take a firefly before this phone.
I would definitely move to windows or maybe andriod, would prefer windows though. Hopefully WM 6.5 will catch up with the rest.
TOTALLY!
Sprint claims Android isn't mature enough, but they put out this garbage?
Actually, throwing cupcake on this thing might not be such a bad idea...
Give it real DivX playback.
Yes,VeryGood!
Give it to MAcGruber.
Engrave a chuck norris image on the back. then everyone will love it or you know what will happend if not
When the dash comes out on sprint in a few months, that's the REAL instinct 2.0.
this phone was just a stopgap and more or less irrelevant.
Easy, bring out the Omnia HD and call it the Instinct HD lol, I know the Omnia HD changed names but I would love to have that phone with some of the features on the instinct but only if they really make the software smoother and make the web browser MUCH MUCH BETTER!!
Larger screen (like touch hd). More investment in inking software for the smartphone, compatible with office mobile. With inking software I mean more and better recognition of the characters and in whole setences like on the tablet pc. Capacative and resistive touch for both multitouch and inking recognition.
Maybe have Samsung actually give a crap about what they're developing. This half-assed attempt to make a touch screen phone is evidence enough they are only making low-end devices for the mighty pipeline (carriers). Until phone manufacturers get out of that crappy business model, there's nothing you can do to this phone to make it better. OEMs will continue to cut corners to offer the cheapest phone for the carriers.
I agree. I've had Samsung "dumbphones" in the past and Samsung just didn't ever seem to care about the UI or the user experience. Their phones are annoyingly quirky and require too many actions to complete a task. Put out a product you are invested in!
I'd remove that sprint logo, it ruins the looks, especially that > at the end.
I don't have such a phone so this concludes my input based on the picture.
Gee I don't know, how about lowering the price?
I'd much rather buy a Sciphone i68+, which is only $90 yet is unlocked quadband GSM and has a 3.2 inch display :

A portrait slide down keyboard and web OS. Duh!
Having the original Instinct, can tell you that phone is a piece of monkey shit! It crashes, locks up and freezes constantly. I am on my 5th one. Sprint still hasn't been able to fix the problems with the phone and their only solution is to swap it out for another. You would think 5 software updates later, they could solve some of these problems.
Get rid of the Java Brew OS! It sucks! The virtual java keyboard SUCKS on so many levels... without an accelerometer, you are constantly turning your phone from portrait to landscape unless you are some freakazoid who actually likes the portrait keyboard. Replace Java Brew with Android, that way we can at least have some REAL APPS!
The greedy fucks at Handmark who's software is pretty much the only thing that comes on this shitty phone recently put ADs at the top of their apps. The weather app is so fucking lame that it cannot even display an animated radar image. How hard is this to accomplish Sprint? Seriously? Animated gif support should not be that hard. It's not like we are asking for Flash!
How about a real YouTube app?
How about STOP TAKING AWAY ALL THE GODDAMN TV / RADIO STATIONS! When I signed up, there was a ton of content in the TV / Radio app, now things like NPR to Comedy Central Live have all been removed in favor of trying to get you to sign up for TV packages. That's some bullshit, I am already paying $99 for an UNLIMITED EVERYTHING PLAN, so why the fuck am I losing channel/stations as the premium packages grow in size? don't even get me started on the TV video quality! If you actually want to do watch TV with any real sense of quality, you have to do some #DATA settings hacks... but if you do, then you can't watch the News videos from Handmark app which actually has very good quality.
So, drop Java Brew and replace it with Android. Drop the ridiculous license fee and locked API restrictions that prevent independent developers from writing apps for this phone. Keep pushing out firmware updates until the phone actually works without issue. Stop screwing us over by taking away the TV / Radio stations. Animated GIF support for animated radar in the Weather app. Tell Handspring to remove those fucking ads at the top of there apps. Add an accelerometer because it's ridiculous when you try to use Opera in landscape how many times you have to rotate the phone 90 degrees. It would be nice to be able to remove Google Maps without bricking the phone. But hey... Sprint at least fixed it to where we can type MICROBREW without rebooting the phone.
I'm in the same boat. Navigation is nice, and LIve Search has proved very useful, but the Handmark apps are total dung. You can't even pick which sports leagues news you want, and are instead stuck with whichever one or two they feel like having at any given time. The phone freezes and lags horribly. Opera mini runs fine on the original Instinct, and helps for some things but it still doesn't hold a candle to Safari. I'm gonna be taking a long hard look at the Pre, and if I don't like that will probably move to a Blackberry since all I mostly use the phone for email and texting anyway. And with an actual app store that is improving, it wouldn't be a bad option.
How would I change it...
1. Put it on AT&T... (Sorry I like my AT&T since all my family and freinds are on AT&T and it's free mobile to mobile with them 24/7)
2. BIGGET screen
3. Better keyboard
4. More programs to download and install. As many as the iphone! I love some of the iphone programs just can't stand the iphone!
Honestly, with the amount of phones out there with bugs and what not, I'm completely satisfied with this phone. I feel it's not like the original instinct or like a good amount of phones on the market now a days that attempt to do what it's software and/or hardware is incapable of. It does what it's advertised to do. I would never pay full price or this or any other phone, but after 1 month of using it and all of it's features I'd say it's alright.
The instinct 2 doesn't look nice to me, but of course it's spec sheet is way more impressive. I see the s30 as just the original with a much needed facelift.
Oh and living without rev-A is perfectly fine. It's not like the browser can handle faster speeds anyways and it's not like there is a browser that's fully compatible with the hardware and render's things faster. And I guess lastly, any other sort of streaming media works just fine on this phone with rev-0.
Bottom line, I like the phone and it's features. Are there more things that could have been packed into it? Yes, but as a gadget kind of guy - as we all are if we are even posting on this "thread" - then we always want more.
Well....its in Sprint, has a random OS with no really cool features and the Pre's about to come out so I don't see any reason why someone on Sprint would buy one.
I'm in an awful awful boat...
I just lost my original Instinct last week, and i'm using an old phone as a placeholder.
do i call in my insurance and replace my Instinct? Or do i continue to use my placeholder phone and use my money for a Pre?
I do like my instinct, but i feel a constant sense of phone envy when my buddies whip out their iPhones and G1's. So i'm left wondering, is it worth replacing? or is it time to move on?
feel free to respond with your thoughts.
Hold out for the pre.. honestly. I loved the instinct too nbut the pre has everything but expandable memory. If i wasnt stuck with the instinct for the time being i would just up and get the pre at launch. But im not paying full price.
I just dont do that
Make it an iPhone.
Voted: Worst Comment of Today.
I think you mean, give it the iPhone software. Given that the iPhone hardware was outdated and overpriced when it launched LAST JUNE.
I was looking for a Highly ranked comment but to no avail. I guess no one has posted a good list of changes. I'll come back later.
