Video: Inventec's Moblin-based MediaPhone shown at Computex
You may be doing your best to plug your ears and pretend that Moblin's no big deal, but blissful ignorance is only effective for so long. At a Moblin press event over at Computex, the Inventec handset you see pictured above was demonstrated. Reportedly, the MediaPhone was a working unit based around Intel's forthcoming Moorestown platform, and the talking head made it clear that we wouldn't see a "netbook experience" simply shoved in here. We also get the idea that this particular device is just the beginning of a short to medium list of similar products, but there's obviously no word yet on what other handset / MID / UMPC makers are swallowing the Moblin pill. Live demonstration video is just past the break.

5+ inches? Too big for my pocket, too small to replace netbook. Any use for it?

That's what she said?

Give it to a kangaroo. They can stick it in their pouch with no problem at all. Great for them to watch TV hopping around in the outback.
Are they really designing devices with no demand behind them? That seems rather foolish. I think the size is just fine for watching videos or if it could play some games. If I could hook up a small keyboard to it, then that would make it even more practical. Six hours battery life would be decent.

Wake me when we see moblin for phones actually running on this.

I am truly excited for moblin on cell phones along with netbooks. I tried the beta (should have been called alpha....) a couple of weeks ago and the interface is amazing. If they can transfer that appropriately to a mobile phone, I think it will be a strong competitor with other mobile phone operating systems.

Will that also have cell phone capabilities?

Question: Why Mobilin? Why not a customized version of Android? It could be anything you want.

Why moblin? Moblin (intel) is OS in every aspect, from the drivers on up. Android (Google android market? google is a search engine which involves web ads) is a marketing scheme from the getgo, and as such it 'needed' true competition from a hardware (if not a carrier) standpoint, if for no other reason. Moblin has no 'market' nor is it tied to a carrier. It does require embedded intel graphics and an intel cpu. Intel, I have no problems with. Google, I do. Google has become monopolistic and overbearing on the web and now they want your hardware too?-NOT
