NEC builds WiMAX router for sharing sweet broadband goodies with your friends over WiFi
We're big into 3G routers, don't get us wrong, but with a bit of WiMAX on tap, the concept becomes all the more succulent. NEC is showing off a vaguely defined Mobile WiMAX Router at Interop Tokyo 2009, which can run on battery and shares its connection over WiFi. NEC isn't talking launch plans just yet, but plans on rolling out the device alongside local WiMAX rollouts.

This type of technology could really give WiMAX a boost in legitimacy, by piggy-backing off of the ubiquity of WiFi.

If the signal strength is solid and the speed is there, I'll ditch Comcast for this.

Now all we need is a WiMax network to connect to in some place like... the SF Bay Area/Silicon Valley (even Clear's roadmap for 2010 launches doesn't include us, WTF?)

Cradlepoint is already making great WiMax routers for Clearwire's Clear and Sprint's Xohm products. The MBR1100 and the PHS300CW (which is really the ClearSpot) are both fantastic routers and Clear is selling the ClearSpot for $139.99 here in Las Vegas. By the way, the product is sensational. When combined with the 3 x 5 inch, 3 oz ClearSpot, it empowers a person with a 4G WiMax modem wth the ability to share it with a walking, personal hotspot. The rechargable battery lasts about 2+ hours. You should see all of the eyes that are opening here when I demonstrate it! When this technology comes to your area, you will WANT! If you are in Vegas anytime soon, look me up...Robert@ProGizmos.com Engadgeteers get first class treatment with me!

My school is rolling out wimax across the whole city this fall for students. I would love to have one of these to network my house with, I would have more cash for beer.
