Edelweiss PC casemod goes above and beyond insanity
Sure, these days, it can be pretty hard to get super-stoked over a casemod... after all, they're basically a dime a dozen. We're always impressed with the crazy ones though, and this one over at Million Dollar PC -- the Edelweiss (possibly named after our least-favorite song and flower), really takes the crazy and turns it up to 11. We're not even sure what's going on, to be honest, but we can assure you of this much: we're really, really fond of it. Two more shots after the break.

I guess this Edelweiss PC will be good for pirates then?
DAYUMN!
yea didnt a car company come up with this concept with cooler colors and more contour edges?
It looks like the BMW designed ThermalTake case that was on display at CES 2009.

it's ok. i got something in the works that will make this look like an antec case.. hopefully it can be finished this year.
Really uncool, Engadget. Really uncool.
Look! It's moving. It's alive. It's alive... It's alive, it's moving, it's alive, it's alive, it's alive, it's alive, IT'S ALIVE!
Dude, ure okay?
Pure awesomeness =D
Totally cool...
I buy it kktybye
this is madnas!!!!! i love it
No, this is SPARTA!!!11!1
Too bad they hooked up the H2O cooling in series. Hopefully they sent it to the CPU first.
That hardly matters. Water's got such a massive specific heat capacity that it might go up a couple of degrees from cooling the entire computer, and that'll have very little effect on how much heat it can take off of each component. As long as the radiator can take off as much heat as the components add under full load you'll be fine, regardless of the order.
Considering the size of the radiator and the compromised airflow, I'd guess the last link in the chain(whichever chip that is) runs hotter than I'd be willing to accept if I put this much into a build.
Some people would rather win the show than the race.
agreed
Will is correct. The temp change is dependent of the radiator. Temp change from cpu to video to video to on board chipset won't matter.. This system will still be cooled. Just think how long it takes you to boil water. And that's a direct heat source isolated into one area. This is various heat sources in multiple areas of moving cooled water. Water flow is just fine on this system. Not to mention we don't even know how strong his pump is.
almost all watercool is done in series.
it doesn't make a difference.
Very nice. Love the individually braided cables.
I think it's inspired by the very one you posted before (BMW case)
http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/06/bmw-designs-pc-case-for-thermaltake/
Same thought here
I knew I had seen that somewhere before. Just didnt realize it does look almost identical to the BMW case.
yeah i thought of that too, i guess this person didn't want to wait/pay for it. it's a very cool idea, and this one is very well done.
Does this blend drinks to!! If so I will have a shake!
It looks like a sewing machine.
My thought. Singer case mods.
But sewing machines can be awesome too
Well add a foot pedal and I'm sold.
This is a very impressive case. Looks like easy cleaning and it'll make use of the surrounding air to cool. I would totally buy it.
any pc that has a cooling tower is awesome, by definition.
Amen! That is case mod nirvana.
beautiful
*nerdgasm*
"We're not even sure what's going on, to be honest"
Lol Mac users.
I build computers and that is a damn confusing tower I don't think it has anything to do with them using a mac which they probably don't even do.
I liked it [+]
Greg hasn't been around Engadget very often, judging by the last part of that run-on sentence.
i own a macbook pro hahaha WTF right lol im a mac user, how ahaha right. what ever
Wow, that's absolutely beautiful.
looks like it's taking up too much space.
It haz 24 SSD drives? That would be totally awesome! ^^
Dibs - I called it
...as some others have commented on already...it's a thermaltake level 10...like..still awesome and all, but would have been way cooler a few months ago..
Did they design the Transformers in the new movie... namely Devastator?
The irony is with all that hardware being cooled by a single 120.3 radiator, the cooling isn't actually going to be that great.
CAPTAIN:

JAWOHL!
+1000 for working a song from The Sound of Music into a case-mod topic. That's got to be a first.
Probably inspired by the BMW/Thermaltake Level 10 case. Integrated cooling tower is sweet. Overall nice mod.
Come on guys. Work it out. Edelweiss Microscopes... It is a mod of a microscope. The white, the tower. It works.
Finally, someone stating the (what was to me) obvious.
just the one hard drive? no RAID then... baaaah
More video card than hard drives is immediate fail.
You guys are right. This thing just plain sucks. Your cases are so much better.
For those saying it would've been cooler if it was a few months ago.. this particular one was first built in 2006 so it was/still is wel ahead of it time design-wise, the BMW/Thermaltake was probably inspired by the Edelweiss rather than the other way round.
You don't like the song? You.. you.. you.. uncultured swine!
The top photo is the back because we see the typical ports: audio, keyboard, AC input, etc.
BUT the 2 hard drives have no cables going to them as we see both hard drives have two ports with nothing plugged in. I love how the AC power cord is shoved into a nearby cavity and isn't attached to the mains. LOL!!
So I guess we are not seeing a working configuration, just one made to look pretty for the pictures. (BTW I am a photographer.)
The question I have: what side would be considered the front if it were sitting by/on my desk?

might want to click through. they are most definitely plugged up.
I want to correct my posting.
It is not two hard drives on the back which are unconnected. It is a pair of video cards. Sorry 'bout that.
As for the product photography, I for one, would like to see more detail in the shadows of the black areas in these 3 photos. Only when I went to the Million Dollar PC website did I get a better idea what was going on as they had close-ups there.
It was in those close-ups that I noticed the fluid cooling tubes were only friction fit. I suppose if one used a small hose and a barb fitting there would be no leaks but if this baby were in my office I would want a "belt and suspenders" approach.
Overall a quite impressive job.

You are a moron, so yes the AC is possibly run in a fake manner to show realism, but if you actually looked at the pictures, sata cables are plugged into the mobo, and go routed through the white tunnels that go up the back of the DVD and HD.
Well now I know to avoid PC Tech Support Atlanta if you can't identify a graphics card from a hard drive.
If they actually ran the power chord out into a plug it would ruin the shot with a twisted cable against the lovely clean product. Photographer, really?
Where are the hose clamps? That thing is going to be leaking all over...
why would it leak without hose clamps? oversized barbs coupled with slightly undersized hoses and no clamps = no leaks
The song, yeah a little girly.
The flower? That's a man's flower. It's a recognized symbol of alpine soldiers. The edelweiss is about as manly as a flower can get.
that's a super cool case mod. Big giant props to the maker!
Don't really like the exposed components. Being the klutz that I am, if I had a PC like that it wouldn't last 2 days. Pretty lights and design though.
Um, I'm not even sure where to begin. You may be a photographer, but I'm guessing computers aren't your area of expertise... The 'hard drives' you refer to are the video cards. They are linked via Nvidia's SLI interface. The only real hard drive in the system is lower most component in the system, and is supported by the water cooling tubing you see. For those of you afraid of leaks, it's unlikely to happen. If you are using 1/2" barbs, and 7/16" ID tubing, the fit is very tight and secure.
Regarding the cabling, there is nothing attached for photography purposes. It makes for a much better picture when you don't have peripheral cabling hanging all over the place, The computer is fully functional in every way.
Am I the only one who clicked on this article thinking the famous German brewery had produced a beer producing casemod?
Very poor, Engadget...very poor...
this is great, I need to render some video and patch up my jeans.
I think Apple should build something like this. Then maybe I'd buy one over a Hackinfosh. Except I guess it would be hella expensive.
"Let's push these Imperials out of Gallia! Squad 7, move out!" *turns on Edelweiss*
Nifty but you can only have the 1 graphics card, and the main board's casing looks a bit boring, this can be improved upon methinks, not that it isn't good though.
Very nice photography- I like what they did with the starlite lens.
it seems like the same idea from bmw for thermaltake. http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/06/bmw-designs-pc-case-for-thermaltake/
It looks like some sort of futuristic espresso machine.
that motherboard is so 2 years ago!!!
Read the MDPC website, that's because this is a rebuild of a 2006 computer.
engadget u in trouble....http://www.million-dollar-pc.com/messages/mdpc-edelweiss-message.gif
Yeah I saw that too. Would the guy be happier if Engadget had hot-linked the pics causing every Engadget visitor to soak his bandwidth quota?
I don't get how Engadget is in trouble... a) you don't need to ask permission if you're reporting it as news, not like Engadget is saying they made this; b) Engadget never said this case was new, all the article says is "Wow, this casemod is wicked." and c) Engadget got this from Case Mod Blog... why do they need to be so snarky toward Engadget?... I think MDPC needs to pull a giant stick out of its ass or something.
Thanks for the earworm, jerks!
This was done in 2006 and just repainted and sleeved in 2009...
SHAME ON YOU THERMALCAKE BMW !!!
http://img4.abload.de/img/mdpc-lolhxly.jpg
I like the attention to detail with the wires other than that, yawn...
http://www.engadget.com/tag/thermaltake%20level%2010/
Needs red dye in the water
no... here in p-town, Edelweiss means one thing... yummy, yummy sausage: http://www.edelweissdeli.com/
be careful if you bring that pc here, it might get eaten. (that cabling does kind of resemble ground meat...)
it's a microscope
I really don't understand why people call these 'mods'. A mod isn't a mod if it's mostly built from scratch.
Don't get me wrong, I think this is great, but it's not a mod.
Pretty badass.
The liquid cooling tank is the coolest thing I've ever seen. Anyway somebody can tell me how to make something like that where it is a transparent glass cylinder would be greatly appriciated.
Still, amazing job
Wow... But can it cook?
bmw and thermaltake ripoff need i say more
Hey dumbass, he made this in 2006
Pure awesome.
Looks like an industrial microscope, to bad he didn't add a stepper motor to slowly raise and lower the platform.
i think you guys put up the wrong picture. this is an old sewing machine. lol
actually im sorry this what happens when you mate an old sewing machine with a ps2.
all that work and time and effort and he uses a fatality Mobo?
Million Dollar PC isnt very happy about what Engadget has done here, they have posted an image saying:
ENGADGET.COM:
-Why did you just grab our pictures without asking me?
-This system was built in 2006, just rebuild in white this year
-Thermal-Cake? Cooling was shown in 2009
So what is original 2006 or 2009?
Check it out for yourself here: http://www.million-dollar-pc.com/systems-2009/special/lessdegrees/pius-edelweiss.htm
-- and here: http://www.million-dollar-pc.com/messages/mdpc-edelweiss-message.gif
The asshole should be happy Engadget showed it on a website where people read about tech and not flash pictures about!
Million Dollar PC should be happy they are finally getting hits on their website!
Read the comment on the top of the builders page hahahaha !!!
