Rumored Sony Ericsson "Kiki" handset isn't a boring one
That supposedly upcoming Android XPERIA that Mobil dug up might have our minds, but it's this leaked handset (which, to be fair, looks fairly sketchily rendered), the Sony Ericsson Kiki, that has won our hearts. The screen is made of glass, with an image seemingly rear-projected onto it (teleprompter style), while the keys are, um, scarce. Mobil was able to offer few hints as to how this works or what all it does, and it seems like it falls far short of the functionality of a feature phone, but we're sure we want one whatever it is.

That thing is atrocious!! How could something be so hideous?!
Quantumphysics @ Jul 4th 2009 2:25PM
I wonder what's going to be the next big thing after touchscreen phones?
Barney @ Jul 4th 2009 2:44PM
"I wonder what's going to be the next big thing"
...that's what she said
AndrewNoNumbers @ Jul 4th 2009 2:52PM
This looks like it would be a Japan-only phone. So considering that it's not all that weird.
JJ @ Jul 4th 2009 3:44PM
"I wonder what's going to be the next big thing after touchscreen phones?"
Cell phone brain implants!
Alex @ Jul 4th 2009 5:30PM
Agreed. I don't see how this is an attractive device by any means. Pass!
put4558350 @ Jul 4th 2009 7:22PM
laser display eat battery really fast. and it's monochrome-ness make it less attractive.
When phone's direction is multimedia - multifunction. I don't think that laser display is suitable for handset.
Jamie @ Jul 5th 2009 6:40AM
Who would want a cell phone that would look like a miniature Coin?
Jamie @ Jul 5th 2009 6:42AM
miniature Coinstar is what I meant to say

So it's a reptilian-cucumber phone?!?

sweet
Totalfixation @ Jul 4th 2009 2:23PM
It's so funny how they go out of their way to put "Vodafone." As if they needed to sport a carrier to sell their phone. Make better phones and get rid of that proprietary connector.
Ellianth @ Jul 4th 2009 4:06PM
What kind of phone do you use?
greenlight @ Jul 4th 2009 2:23PM
Looks like a dreamy concept. Probably not a real product.
chazz @ Jul 4th 2009 2:24PM
there won't be any complaints about how much battery is left....that meter is humongous
hemmy @ Jul 4th 2009 2:26PM
maybe I'm crazy, but I like it. It speaks to my inner 70s child with that blocky atari2600 color gradient :)
CH3BURASHKA @ Jul 4th 2009 2:28PM
Concept art always looks so cool, and yet always so impractical.
hank94jp @ Jul 4th 2009 2:39PM
Oooh a glass screen....Sounds durable.
And I like how they include the SE proprietary charger. Assholes.
Husher @ Jul 4th 2009 2:39PM
I like it! seems very original. but what does kiki mean? Isn't that what a Korean types in wow when they laugh?
Kusk @ Jul 4th 2009 2:53PM
I went down to the beach and saw Kiki
She was, like, all "ehhhh"
And I was, like, "whatever!"

In Tagalog it means a particular female no-no part.
Salem @ Jul 5th 2009 8:13PM
Around these parts for arabic speakers, it's children's slang for poop. Like if a mom wants to ask her little kid if he's used the bathroom, she'd use the word kiki...
Somehow I don't think this product name will go down well around here...
Wizardhowl @ Jul 4th 2009 2:44PM
I might be the only one thinking this but, I think it looks awesome. Regardless of functionality just based on style alone I would pick this up.
Husher @ Jul 4th 2009 3:35PM
i also think it looks good. if it is a projection image onto the screen from the bottom of the screen it could look cool. however i dont think it would work at all in day light.

Wha!!!!!!
Does anyone think that what you can see of the screen looks kinda WinMo-ish?
Theodore Wirth @ Jul 4th 2009 3:05PM
That's one good-looking piece of gear! Unfortunately, it's all about the UI. I want one, but I need more info about US carriers and how the UI stands up to the iPhone or the Touch.
jack @ Jul 5th 2009 5:48AM
Theodore wirth, you sir are an idiot
Brian from Texas @ Jul 6th 2009 9:53AM
@jack:
Appropriate and well played.

Look at the stripes below the three extruded buttons, there are four of them, it looks like that unlabeled buttons.
The kids know where those are anyways.
I like it, it's a Motofone F6 Killer!!
and the Monofone is great if you like to have seperate devices.

Only the women will buy this because they dont care for features and want something that matches their handbags. Cool beans.
todd @ Jul 5th 2009 2:00AM
I for one look forward to this if it is an actual phone. I always look forward to any new phone concept. With touchscreens seeming to dominate the landscape in terms of new phones, this is quite refreshing. The problem with touchscreens for me is that because a huge amount of phone's real estate is devoted to the screen itself and there is very little design wiggle room to play around with after that. I miss buttons. Heres hoping that this comes to fruition.
10minutehobo @ Jul 4th 2009 5:08PM
Make one in black!

If this is indeed the new Android XPERIA, how come it's running WM?!
ToniCipriani @ Jul 4th 2009 5:46PM
They're still using FastPort connectors? Even Nokia switched off from Pop-Port...

i cant believe they are still using that awful connector, so impractical, so easy to brake, so bloody big. never ever had a second sonyericsson phone mainly for that reason
