iPhone 3GS-compatible redsn0w jailbreak released
You won't find an official announcement anywhere on the iPhone dev-team's blog yet, but a new version of the redsn0w jailbreak, 0.8, has just been posted to its official torrents that apparently includes 3GS compatibility (in addition to support for the 3G and original iPhones plus the second-gen iPod touch, as before). Whether it's better than GeoHot's purplera1n jailbreak is unknown, but hey, the more, the merrier -- even the iPhone hacking community isn't immune from brutally competitive market forces, eh?

Does YouTube work?
Does your mom work?
mine does occasionally.
Who needs youtube when you can change your background picture?
I really don't understand why we can't change our BG pic w/out jailbreaking! I guess it's a performance thing.. But I have a 3GS! Its fast!

@cellien
it is for about two weeks then ur perception adapts and it's back to "geez that message box is dragging it's ass, I just lost a whole .3seconds of productivity".
Does anyone know if winterboard works with this?
winterboard isn't exactly the most important thing given by a jailbreak..
Winterboard not working has nothing to do with the jailbreak itself. It has to do the saurik and the mobilesubstrate files with Cydia. Those were updated last night to support Winterboard. So no matter which jailbreak you use, as long as you install cydia and update it you will be able to use Winterboard. duh
winterboard was also updated today, however u dont need redsn0w to use it. it was a mobilesubstrate thing that needed to be updated. i jb'ed with purplera1n yesterday, so i was wondering whether or not i should re-jb with the official dev-team version, or if im fine with geohotz?
but ive been using winterboard with the purplera1n jb so far today and have no problems. (springboard did crash twice into safe mode, but i think that was something different).
Thanks, Updating Cydia as I type.
Most of Winterboard is working, SMS themes don't work for some reason.
When will they release it ?
Thanks.
It's already released.
Great
Saw this on their Twitter earlier and was pumped.
My 3GS should be arriving in the mail within an hour or two so this certainly comes in handy, haha.
It's the same exploit as Purplera1n, but they came across it independently.
That's what she said...when she was caught copycatting on her exams.
Let's hope I don't mess this up.
anyone get Tricker ThreeG to work with the 3G S yet?
not yet, hopefully soon!
They announced it on twitter.

I've used a lot, if not all of the dev team jaibreak methods, and the purplera1n tool that just came out makes them all look stupid.
The purplera1n tool was ridiculously simple, took less than 30 seconds, didn't require any downloads of ipsw files, and didn't force a full restore of the iphone.
Most of the other jailbreak tools amateur in comparison!
Yes, I agree. Purplera1n was ridiculously easy to install.
It was the first time I'd ever had an iPhone to jailbreak, and hot damn was it easy
it was literally pressing a single button
Seriously, and I thought it was easy before !
Was your activated or hactivated? what network are you on?
*are amateur in comparison
How sad that we have to rely on hacking projects like this simply to have the iPhone provider unlocked, something that is readily available in some countries outside the US, officially from Apple.
How sad that in some European countries Apple products cost twice as much as in the US. Example - MacBook Pro 17 inch 2,66 GHz costs $2000. In Bulgaria, the same MacBook costs just under $3,700
Sorry, meant to say 15 inch.
Blame it on their taxes/duties. Fact is Macs that are sold in Europe are pretty much the same hardware wise as the ones sold in the US. None of them are being locked into a specific ISP. Why does cellphones in the US have to be provider-locked? Mind boggling.
I have a simple question. Why do jailbreaks often break YouTube functionality? Why is YouTube so delicate?
Both YouTube and push require certificates that allow access to the services.
the linux version of 0.8 didn't work for me - it stalled near the end and never put Cydia on (I'm on Ubuntu 9.04 32-bit). The mac version worked fine even on an old G4 powerPC, although I did have to remove the hub in the middle and connect directly to the mac (I don't think that is new news). I was getting _really_ fast battery drain yesterday with the purplera1n JB - we'll see if the dev team's is any different -- it was almost as if purplera1n was missing the power mgmt kernel modules, but I am only guessing and in no way mean to be talking smack - it was a useful JB.
redsn0w? Lacks a little zing as far as names go. For instance, my gamertag is redTHUNDERsnow. Of course, I didn't use a 0 instead of an o, but at least I'm bringin' the thunder..................
When will Apple realize that they can't keep complete control over their products as they originally intend to do. Whenever they try to keep their products locked, they get jail-broken a few days after released.
take that iphone dev team!
lol wut? This is their release...
this one actually worked for me haha
FIRST?
you were the last comment when I saw... how ironic?
...so is my timestamp, sherlock. :) I make my own irony.
оk, i'll take
Purple rain is working for me
For someone that has never jailbroken either their 3G or 3GS, what is the benefit these days other than using your iPhone on a different carrier?
using on a different carrier is unlocking. jailbreaking is for installing, well, whatever you want. customized UI, emulators, whatever.
does youtube work with this jailbreak? i have an ipod touch gen1.
I'll wait for gr33nW1nd!!!11one which will roxxorz teh 1P|-|0n3z...
geez...
very easy jailbreak on 3GS, winterboard doesn't appear to have any problems now :)
Having trouble during the jailbreak using redsn0w. Keeps freezing during the "waiting for reboot" screen. Any suggestions?
"Any suggestions?"
Don't jailbreak your iPhone!
What sort of phone requires unofficial hacks just so you can bypass their restrictive app store? Can you imagine the outrage if Microsoft did this ? They'd be before the EU and US courts within a week.
