Android-powered HTC Click rumored to be crazy cheap unlocked
One more note about that Android-powered HTC Click that we saw in a gloriously-framed shot yesterday morning: it's going to be cheap. It had been said all along that the Click would mark HTC's first Android entry into the low-end fray (joining the Touch Viva on WinMo), meaning the sticker price would be kept to a minimum -- but the Vietnamese forum that first brought you this picture is saying that we're looking at somewhere between 5 and 6 million dong, which works out to $280 to $336 unlocked. That's cheap enough to ensure that it's free on contract virtually anywhere in the world where it's sold, bringing Android to a whole new demographic. Now, just call us when the Hero's down to $280, eh?

Any specs on this thing? I really want an android phone with power/ram. My G1 is too damn slow.
Yeah, unless they make the widgets that use less resources, this might not make for an enjoyable experience.
spec: crazy awesome
Crazy cheap price means crazy cheap specs, I would assume.
Wow, with 5 million dong you could pay the damages to the family of a girl Gary Glitter molested!
6 million dong. that's OVER 9000
I have a BIG DONG for Tia Tanaka up there!
HTC: "You can have a chin, or 1990 design. We will NOT make an attractive phone, don't ask."
hahaha true that
Attractive Android phone, anyway... why can't their WinMo hardware design people teach their Android hardware people how it's done?
Yeah, I meant Android.
They'll get it right eventually. Until then, the samsung i7500 will suffice.
This is the the most hypocritical article I've seen a long time. Simple response.
Call me when the iPhone is $280!! HA!
The Magic is extremely sexy up close. I'd go as far as saying it's the most attractive looking phone I have ever seen. It's got a little mini-chin on it, sure, but it's not an angular bend in the phone like on the G1 or Hero, and it actually looks pretty slick without making it significantly bigger in your pocket.
It looks crazy cheap! Horrible housing.
how come all the android phones don't have video-call capability...? not popular among US users?
nope. not at all.
Is it popular anywehre in the world?
We have it here in Australia but nobody uses it, its gone the way of WAP.
US Carriers don't allow it, and since 99% of people get their phones directly from their carriers, the chances that you will ever encounter another person in the US with a front-facing camera on their phone are extremely slim, so in the end it'd be pretty worthless.
Crazy ugly unlocked, too.
I want to pay in dongs if possible
I would prefer the dongs.
What can I get for one dong? Is size proportional to the value?
I'll keep my dong, thank you
I only have one dong (sighs)
@ James M
That's what she said?
Certainly LOOKS cheap, like most HTC devices.
Haha are you high? Surely you mean Android devices, as almost all of their WinMo phones look freaking incredible
I'd have to agree about most HTC's looking amazing. many of their devices are drool-worthy.. this one just hits me wrong, maybe it's the HUGE dpad. if that were more proportionate, I think this phone would look at least 50% better.
Like with everything, you pay for what you get. They can't make a phone like this be the same spec and quality as their high-end phones and then sell it half the price, but no doubt it will be made well. History has shown that with HTC if you ever actually tried one before. For example if you get the chance to hold a HTC Hero in your hands, you'll realise that its a lot different than it looks online and feels incredible. You might make you wonder why the iPhone has a cheap plastic back when you paid twice the price.
Pretty safe to say at this point that it'll have a 2.8 inch screen, 3.5mm jack, wifi, microSD, and Touch FLO 2D. In terms of RAM and processor, it's hard to say, but I wouldn'.t bet that it'd have more than 256MB RAM and a 400Mhz processor.
GSM Arena is saying that the phone has the body of the HTC Magic and is betting on a 3.2 inch screen. I'd pick it up right away if that was the case. They're also betting on an unlocked price of USD 335, again, very attractive.
And if this ever comes to Rogers, they'll sure as hell remove the wifi.
That's the beauty of it being unlocked Peter. If Rogers sells this without WiFi on their network, you can just go on eBay and buy an unlocked version of the phone from overseas that will work on their network AND still have wifi.
@Peter
Really? I've got a Rogers Touch and its wifi isn't disabled or anything. I haven't looked into their other HTC phones, but do they actually lock out the wifi (or remove the hardware entirely) on those?
very cool .......useful

Ah, I love the smell of Vietnamese dong jokes in the morning :)
Kudos to HTC for giving an option to the people who dont want to spend 100s on something that bulges out of their pocket like a huge wad of Vietnamese Dong (ba-da-boom)
A7
The Vietnamese dollar is called the Dong?...
My word.
Dong is Vietnamese currency unit. It is not vietnamse dollar.
You should get out more....the Vietnamese "dollar"....lol.
Okay... Point taken. Unit of currency would have been the more appropriate term. But I think we all knew what I was getting at. Sheesh...
The current strategy to sell Android phones isn't working well. They need to sign up a lot more carriers worldwide and in the US. The Palm Pre has more buzz than Android despite only recently being available for purchase.
Android certainly has a lot of buzz - maybe not as much in the US but it does none the less - especially in the far east. HTC strategy is to target China with android phones.
I would buy that to play around with if it were 300$..
Hell, I bought an iPod touch on launch just to see what the fuss was about with the platform.. 300 for android is certainly cheaper than 400 i shelled out for the touch.
well someone is trying to impress poeple by saying the have money to throw away. Good for you, your so cool lol
This probably won't be released in the US, and won't have the 3G frequencies used in the US.
Is that a trackball? O_o
Looks like a big optical trackpad to me.
How much is that in schlongs?
1 schlong = 2 dongs, don't ask why...
Yes, but 2 dongs = 1 wang
A new Sciphone N12 (with Android, Marvell 624Mhz processor and more that elevate it above HTC's Hero) is going to be launched for $ 270 in the end of july. This model is already obsolete and will probably launch at the end of the year.
In addition, the GeeksPhone One will be launched in october, as well with a better price than the HTC click?
HTC's click will be completely redundant by the time it comes out.
But REAL Hero users are saying that it isn't the processor that is the problem, it's the storage speed which is interchangeable and like many most likely the software needs maturing. Throwing big processors at a phone just drains the battery, and battery life is much more important in a mobile device.
Why does HTC always makes ugly Android phones and nice looking WinMo phones? Damnit!
http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2009/07/22/htc-firestone-pictured/
That firestone picture looks like previous generation and for a first render looks poor.
Well when the look at the correct spelling with tonal it's đồng which is a lot different than.....
*sigh* it still looks like dong, guess no one will ever takes our currency seriously.
If it has GPS and WiFi I might get one and use it without a SIM just to give me an extra device to build silly Android projects with.
Does anybody else think this phone smells like QVGA?
The currency is called Dong...must...remain...mature...
Any specs or actual reviews of the HTC Click yet?
Price may be low but if the phone S*cks, then what good is it?
Post some reviews!
Nice
I hope it has decent specs. It should be released about a year from now so hopefully it will be available when I need a new phone.
Android's ultimate weapon against iPhone and WinMo? Price.
