Samsung's Ion-infused N510 netbook steeply priced across the pond
€499. $717. Or three easy payments of €171 ($246). That's the price folks in Europe are being asked to pony up for Samsung's admittedly svelte 11.6-inch N510 netbook. As one of the largest netbooks in its class, this machine -- which can purportedly last for around 6.5 hours under ideal circumstances -- also packs NVIDIA's Ion technology, but a sluggish Atom N280 is still manning the ship. If you'll recall, we actually heard that this here rig would surface sometime this summer, but it looks as if those orders may end up pushed to September. Anyone care to place a pre-order? Or are you more interested in those "real laptops" for just north of seven Benjamins?

The source does say Atom N270 instead of Atom N280, that makes the CPU a little disappointing considering the extra power savings and processing power the N280 gives.
It still seems a good buy, even if it's 70~100 euros over the fair price, since a lot of us are gonna have to spend around 120 euros to upgrade the HDD to 500GB and the memory to 2GB anyway.
Now the €100000 question, from someone that needs to edit a lot of text\code everyday... is the PgUp\PgDn\Home\End available in the directional keys using "Fn"?
I don't find the Atom N280 or N270 sluggish in a netbook with 2GB and windows 7. Samsung lower that price to under $400 and its sold.

Uh.. what the hell?
The commenting system rot now spreads to the very fabric of time....
Actually i followed a link here and posted before it was available from the main page.
See - that's the reason why no manufacturer builds Ion netbooks. Not worth the price premium for typical netbook use cases...
Hopefully LE will change that.
LENOVO S12
WHERE ARE YOU
Pre-ordered by me MWHAHAHAHA!
:(
I'm in Ireland, and it's almost always cheaper to buy from the UK, including the delivery. The Ion is all but stillborn in a netbook form factor anyway; the S12 still hasn't appeared, and not one, but two variants have been announced, one of which is a successor (Ion 2 and Ion LE). I remain interested (in the non-gimped versions anyway), but not at that price.
Shoot, for $700 I'd be able to buy the apple tablet when it came out. My HP mini 1000 does just fine for me in that category.
"we actually heard that this here rig would surface sometime this summer,"
Uh oh someone escaped from the trailer park.
Oh look the ION again in something way to expensive and bigger then it should need to be. Silly ION, when will you learn?
Well, put a single core CPU in it and you have a regular laptop. So what's the point of that, if it's not small??
Basically a netbook with no power and no portability...For a similar price I almost got a Lenovo x61 which is probably smaller and lighter and on top of that has 2.0ghz c2duo.
Am I the only one thinking of VAT? I don't want to sound picky, but in Europe the prices unsually include VAT (far higher VAT than in any US state as far as I know), which in case of France is nearly 20% --> €500 - 20% = €400 = $ 575.That sounds still steep, but more ok for what you get.
day late, dollar short. what the hooting heck is wrong with these people?
Get a grip, Engadget. Since when has European pricing ever corresponded to the pricing in the USA? Unless you take €1 = $1, that is. Never heard of the PSP Go?
I can build a pretty decent setup for $700. Anybody want to give me a Newegg catalog and 7 (nonsequential) big ones?
So? It's hard to compare a desktop with a laptop. The former stays at home. The latter is meant to be taken with you. Netbooks, being light weight and often boasting incredible battery life, particularly emphasize this purpose.
Compare this to the Dell 14z. Its easy to get a good build with a Core2Duo processor for $650. It has pretty much the same graphics engine and it pretty thin. Not as small as a netbook but a way better value.
Most low end laptops (basically any in the $700 price range) still have crappy Intel integrated graphics. But an oh-so-shiny Core 2 Duo...
I'd rather have core 2 duo+GMA4500 than a cr*p Atom+Ion
We hope to see the price come down from here but are very excited to see another Ion netbook in the wild.
