Nokia device passes FCC for T-Mobile USA, looks an awful lot like a new Internet Tablet to us
Every week, random, seemingly anonymous Nokia handsets quietly pick up FCC approval. Most will never see the light of day on an American carrier, and the ones that do have usually already been announced so that by the time we figure out what the FCC filing refers to, it's uninteresting. Today, though, we noticed a Nokia RX-51 get certification, and we were immediately intrigued; standard Nokia phones have an "RM" designation, so "RX" has us thinking that this is no ordinary phone. Taking a peek at the SAR documentation reveals that it rolls deep with AWS 3G, just the kind that T-Mobile USA needs to do its thing. The final piece in this amazing puzzle has to be the ID placement doc, which shows the outline of a device far wider than your standard dumbphone. Where are we going with this? You might recall MobileCrunch's information from a while back suggesting that T-Mobile USA would be getting a Maemo 5-powered superphone codenamed "Rover" -- and, well, we're pretty sure this is it. Stay tuned -- things are about to get interesting.

on the edge of my seat :D
Fo Shizzle
Ziegler,
What's in your bag? ;-)
Wouldn't you like to know?
................dayyyyyyum.
the outline looks identical to my now-deceased N800.
then again, how much variation is there with any nokia tablety gizmo anyway?
hope it's not weaksauce like the N800 or N810.
mmmm... by the looks of it, this christmas belongs to the tablet devices, since it seems there are at least going to be 3... move over Wii!
t-mo's seriously steppin their game up between this, the touch pro 2, and all the android stuff
i know 1-2 years ago, we barely even had a smartphone on tmob.
if this thing has phone capabilities then TMO just got themselves a new subscriber :)
I know! My contract ends next month and if this comes out in time it would be a great replacement... If it is indeed a phone!!! I want to believe that this will be a feature packed phone/tablet that tmobile really needs... That I really need!!!
10 megapixel cam, bluetooth, gps, 32gb memory, plus micro sd slot, Android, captive touch screen, 3 day battery life with all features on, wifi, front facing camera, dual sim slots, and umm 3.5mm head jack
The above specs would make it not suck
3 day battery life?/
lolz get outta town
So all, literally all, the smartphones on the market right now suck?
10 Megapixel camera on phone is just daft. No way you can squueze a lens good enough in that form factor.
Bluetooth, yea. Gps yea. 32Gb yea. Micro sd probably. No android, maemo. 3.5 probably. No comment on others.
the blackberry iden edition has a 4 day battery life...
what is this hearsay about a lens
this isn't about lenses its about MEGAPIXELS gottdamnit!
RX-51 is definitely the Fremantle/Maemo 5 lead device. The ID's been known for months as it appears in the kernel configs Nokia has published as part of the SDKs.
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Nokia has killed so much goodwill in the Maemo community it will be hard to swallow another NIT with an even higher MSRP and even loftier marketing.
Can this be the N900????
Nokia, T-Mobile, and AWS 3G?! Never thought the day would come.
"The device has internal antennas for both cellular and WLAN use. The cellular antenna is located
at the bottom in the back section of the keypad slide. The WLAN antenna is located at the top in
the back section of the keypad slide."
Keypad slide! Sounds like it to me.... n900 here we come.
Things are always "about to get interesting". That's what makes life so much fun and worthy living. The element of surprise! But once the trick is explained, there can be disappointment. Let's hope this is 'the one' for Nokia! (The E71 of touch screen devices?)
SAR report mentions a keypad slide and a camera slide. Is this just the N97 mini? Or do I spot a N800 style kick-stand too? I'm positively moist with anticipation.
This my friend is the real iphone killer. The future looks interesting.
OOOH!!!!
*waits impatiently*
Oh yeah - bring it on :)
I see a stylus silo in at the bottom right - resistive touchscreen?
With a high resolution screen it does help, and for handwriting recognition.
RX is a prefix for Nokia Internet Tablets (N770, N800, N810 and N810WE). The N810WE, latest released by Nokia is RX-48 and the previous model is RX-44 if I'm not mistaken.
The RX-51 is probably Nokia N900.
The feeling of "things are about to get interesting" usually transforms into "meh" immediately after release as people realize they are getting more of the same.
Wow.. Hell froze over and Nokia FINALLY releases a new Internet Tablet.
Shame it took them so long. I sold my N800 on ebay roughly a year ago and moved on to a gigabyte M912 touchscreen netbook/tablet with ubuntu netbook-remix edition.
But I still have fond memories of the N800.
Dual SDHC slots, flawless bluetooth tethering, and a mozilla based browser that had flash support and ad block plus plugin. Those where good mobile computing times.
In all fairness, though, it did have its downsides.. The built-in camera sucked, the CPU needed more umph (ADP plugin saved the web browsing experience), and Nokia's goofy implementation of the LCD screen severely limited the max bit rate of video the N800 could handle.
I looking forward to seeing the specs for the new NIT. Hopefully, they learned and got it right this time around.
It is still a fantastic device, The variety of applications means that it is so versatile, I use mine as a sat nav, MP3 Player, Podcast Downloader, and SIP phone. I would agree with your criticisms though, it does need more CPU umph, and some more ram wouldn't go a miss. One thing I would like to see are louder speakers, It is a bit quiet compared to a tomtom.
Check check it. From December and found in maemo 5 stuffs I guess!

I don't know about the rest of the country, but T Mobile lost it's tower sharing contract with AT&T where I live last week and as a result, T Mobile's service has went from bad to worse. Text messages are clogged and taking 12+ hours to go through. My g/f who is on T Mobile can barely make/receive calls as her phone is constantly going into emergency mode only. I know of at least 15 other people who were all previously on SunCom and now on T Mobile who are having the same problem.
I don't care what T Mobile offered, there is no way I could sign up with them, no matter the deal. Perhaps as I said, it's different in other ares, but here, T Mobile makes Sprint look like an amazing alternative.
I looked for clues about where you live and found none.
I have been waiting years for this memo device.....I want...I need...I must have!!!
Yes it is spelled Maemo and when this N900 comes out in Dec. 2009 it will run Maemo 5.0
Maemo 5, faster/new CPU, more RAM, AWS, real web browsing = I re-sign another contract
