Samsung ST1000 GPS-enabled camera appears in blurrycam shot
We've been waiting for some more compact cameras with integrated GPS features to hit the market, and this blurry shot of an upcoming Samsung ST1000 gives us a little hope. It's actually looking like a pretty hot piece of kit in addition to the geotagging features, with a 12 megapixel sensor with ISO 4800 sensitivity behind a stabilized 5x zoom lens, 3.5-inch touchscreen with gesture support, face detection that prioritizes the most-common faces, and WiFi support all cooked in. The rumor says we're looking at an August 13 launch, so we should know more soon -- hopefully the £349 ($580) price tag is a bit more reasonable when it officially comes Stateside. Hit the read link for some more shots.

Dear Mr/Mrs/Miss Blurrycam
It has come to the attention of myself and the rest of the readers on this blog that we would prefer if you took the picture of a camera that you would take it a decent quality camera (ergo the camera being discussed) In fact we shall make an exception and allow a "Myspace mirror shot" for the sake of a decent photo. So if it is not too much trouble please take this into consideration for your next appearance.
Best Regards,
Swimtedswim and the rest of the Engadget readers
Palm Pre does it better than the iPhone. Seriously.
Anyway, they need more services that support geotagging.
-Palm Pre and Apple iPhone walk into the bar...
-They notice sexy nokia 7900 and samsung T500 sitting at the table looking at them...
-iPhone heads over and asks if he can buy them a drink...
-Samsung and Nokia say" NO!, but your friend Palm Pre can buy us one".
-iPhone gets upset and asks "why!? what does Palm Pre have that I don't?
-Samsung says "we don't want a single action UI!"
-Nokia says "yea and Palm Pre has multi-touch and most importantly MULTITASKING."...
-Palm pre leaves with Samsung and Nokia to a hotel...
Palm Pre takes care of both phones at once while listening to the smooth jazz Pandora station.
....Later that night Palm Pre gets a call... the iPhone had to go home early because Steve Jobs did not approve his actions.
iPhone farts.
HAHA SEE WHAT I DID THERE! HA...... HA HA............................ HA!
12MP! ISO4800! GPS! Wow! Now I can remember where I took those water-color-noisy pictures! /s
Really, somebody needs to stop this MP race and stupid useless high ISO nonsense.
What the hell are you on? Improving sensor signal:noise ratio is not a bad thing for companies to be doing.
I know where I am, but not to sure where your brain is. Did the article actually say Samsung doing anything to improve the sensor (like Fuji's EXR or Sony's Exmor)? Nope. It's just the standard cramming 12MP. So stop your bull, that ISO4800 is going to be so useless that it's a joke.
But the ISO 1600 will be SO useful that its amazing.
There are people that won't shoot above ISO 100 because in their time with film and older digital cameras ISO 200 and 400 were way too noisy.
@neofolklore: Are you serious? Just because the camera can do ISO1600 doesn't mean anything. Plenty of current digicam can do ISO6400 already, and the picture is crap. In fact, I have yet to see a tiny point&shoot that have decent image on anything above ISO400/800 other than maybe the Fuji F200EXR. Just because the camera can do high ISO, doesn't mean the picture quality is anything near acceptable. But hey, if you like water-colored-noisy picture, that's your choice.
Unimaginative Trollbot 1.0 already does this,
your comments are redundant.
Who's taking the picture? C3PO or R2D2?
What the h@ll are "most-common faces"?. Does the auto-focus give top priority to all the twins and triplets in the frame?
It's pretty neat, actually. You can "train" the camera to recognize the faces of, say, your family members, and give each one a name. Then, when a picture is taken and the camera recognizes a face as "common", it will tag the pic's EXIF with the name as a header attribute. Multiple names if there are multiple people in the frame. That way, you can search your pics later by EXIF attributes.
That is actually pretty neat.
Does anyone else laugh a little whenever they read Kreuznach (kroits'nach)?
Hehe.
Er, no.
On the one hand, geotagging your pictures is pretty neat and anything that makes this job easier is to be applauded. However, it will be interesting to see whether this thing managed to resolve a couple of fundamental problems with GPS in a compact camera:
1. It takes a while to get a GPS lock when it is turned on
2. The GPS eats valuable battery power, which is never that good on a compact camera to begin with
Still, I'm sure those Korean boffins have something up their sleeve...
Been waiting for better GPS cams to come out. Samsung is really leading the way recently.
Cant wait to see the specs/tests which will answer question 1 and 2 above.
They're not too bad now. My N85 picks up a GPS signal in a few seconds under good conditions (20 or so when it's cloudy) and battery life is still ok. But with Sirfstar IV coming out which is touted as taking less time to get a lock and 20 times less power consumption.
According to wikipedia, Sirfstar IV, "The chip consumes 62 mW of power during continuous operation."
Can anyone give comparable specs for the other GPS chips on the market? Dunno whether the Sirfstar offers a battery life advantage or dis.
it'll be interesting to see if it performs better than the nikon p6000, which gets kudos for being first, sfaik, but was unfortunately a near miss.
Now my life is complete!!..... A camera with integrated gps that doesn't look like it was beat down with an ugly stick!!! Thank you samsung!
The camera is released in Korea, and advertising in local magazines...

Prices are available in Korea. 388,800 Korean won which is about $324.00. Should be less in the US (in theory) since Korea has lots of taxes for consumer products, particularly electronics....
Can't wait to get this and watch it geotag automatically for my iphoto collection (for new pictures)
I like the GPS function and 5x Optical zoom...
When will Canon release a GPS equipped compact?
