Xbox Micro makes the Wii look overweight
Welcome to Micro Saturday at Engadget! In the absence of hard hitting stories and shocking exposés, we thought we'd turn to the lighter -- and thinner -- side of the news. Enter the Xbox Micro, a 1-inch thick celebration of all that is good and holy about the world of DIY mods. It took six months to make, with a few clever design decisions along the way, but it looks good enough to make even the ninja-black Wii suck its gut in. Comparison pics with the original behemoth are after the break, and hit the read link to see the exposed guts of this little beauty.

I'm probably gonna be called a nub!!11eleven but exactly how does one play a game on it? :S
And are those standard controller ports or no?
Maybe he's turned in to an Xbox Media Center, as that would be really sleek.
They make USB to "Xbox serial USB" adapters. That's what i think there using
I suppose there's an external dvd drive?
Can i have my name back?
The games are stored on the HDD. I can either open it up, hook up the DVD-Drive, and rip them, or rip them with another modded Xbox and transfer them via ftp. The Xbox's controller ports are really just USB 1.0 (or 1.1) ports with 1 added wire for lightguns and a clever disguise. I made two Xbox controller to USB adapters so you can use them with this Xbox.
Oh and I forgot to say OMG I MADE ENGADGET! Okay I'm done.
@Bandit5317
Wait, this is your work? Nice job!! looks really good, has a nice high-end look to it. Understated and svelte.
You should consider making them and selling as XBMC units.
Anyway, cool project.
Xbox controllers use a standard USB controller but with a different plug. This means that you can easily build USBXbox adapters using just wires and the plugs. I built an Xbox -> USB adapter out of a DVD dongle that I hollowed out and installed directly in the Xbox. I could then use the adapter to read files, like movies, using XBMC or Gentoox.
OOOOOOLLLLLDDDDDDD! Not specifically this mod, but there is an xbox that is just a bit thicker and is more chic in my opinion as it has four quick release controller ports. This idea has been around the block a few times, or rather been around for a few years. And he already ripped his games to his hard drive so there's no need for a dvd drive. There are plenty just as small, just not as sleek. xbox-scene.com and check the case mods sections. There are TONS cases and guides for us dummies! It's for all you who don't really have the knowhow. It helps you get started, as did I. :) Hope someone find this useful, since this is more possible than it was when this type of project originally surfaced.
I think a cage fight for the rights to ourname is in order.
Just came in to say "Now this is a mod!"
It's not just a game console or PC shoved in some lame 80s plastic toy casing, or a system with lights all over it. This is the real deal.
Nice work, man.
Oh, Xbox 1...
Exactly. I was expecting a 360. Not as cool.
ya nice way to get people to click the "jump button" Its cool an all but was looking forward to a xbox 360. And how do you play games? Flash drive only?
Can still play DVD's, something the wii cannot do (without modding)... so +1 to the XBOX 1.
still has better graphics than the wii.
@Brent
Actually it cant still play dvd's seeing as the dvd drive was taken out.
When I first saw the picture I was like: "HOW THE HELL DID THEY FIT ALL THE STUFF IN THERE WITHOUT OVERHEATING?". Then I saw it side-by-side with the original Xbox and was like: "Ah... ok. makes sense now." A 360 that small would be nice though. Just a tip: can't you use an external DVD drive using modded firmware?
@Brent, although you do need the Homebrew Channel to play DVDs on Wii, you don't need to actually open up the console or make any hardware changes.
@ ericloewe:
You could give it an external DVD-Drive, but you would have to wire in an IDE connector to the side of the case and use the original drive or one of the select few PC drives which can be flashed with a firmware which would allow it to read original Xbox games. XBMC doesn't support USB DVD-Drives.
*facepalms* Care to explain how a 360 could fit into that device? To remove the heat you would either:
A: Need to transport the heat into a parallel dimension.
B: Have a wind tunnel effect in that device that would blow Max the family Chihuahua through the nearest window.
Never mind the fact that the heat sink alone would be twice as thick as this device. Yet there are posts of ...oh its the first gen.
Has the art of thinking before posting really been lost forever? If so I weep for the future and its inherent stupidity on forums. Critical thinking people. This couldn't be done with the 360...period. Maybe in another process shrink maybe it will be cool enough to do with with some liquid cooling. Right now? Heck no.
Yeah.. It should have been a 360.. who need a xbox now??
"Exactly. I was expecting a 360. Not as cool."
Because we want it to RROD that much quicker.
dude, this is super sweet. maybe we'll see a 360 micro in a few years? wishful thinking
This is the closest to that so far (I didn't build this one):
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=636843
where do you put the disk in???
the design is really simple
it would be better if it had the xbox logo somewhere
They probably just FTP games to the HD instead of using the disc.
@ Sonic:
Correct.
Dimensions:
23.5 x 21.65 x 2.5 cm
Some Specs:
320 GB 2.5" HDD
PW-200-V PSU
TSOP flashed with iND-BIOS
v1.4 motherboard
320 GB! FTP nothing. Once you've copied the files, softmodded it would never need another disk. That's why the DVD is left out.
I would expect the mod to play all xbox games from the Hard drive.
The Xbox was an amazing console back in the day. It was a true tank you could keep that baby on for months and never turn it off. Wish they could make console like that this generation.
The Wii?
Microsoft should have hired NVIDIA to design it again. I'm sure they could have got a just as appealing design with 10x more solid hardware, like the original Xbox/
I have left my ps3 on since the day I bought it so it has been running folding at home non stop for 9 months with no problems what so ever. Not to be a fanboy or anything I respect the 360 and the only reason I got a ps3 was for the blu-ray player but just sayin
Agreed. The console itself was ugly as hell, but the hardware inside was all business.
OH NO.. if you kept it on, the crazy liberals and their 'go green, save energy' would be all over you..
They can, but it won't sell as much as the 360 though.
nice to know you people are doing your bits for the environment. WHAT possible reason could you have for leaving something on for that long???
@ cyphodeus
Folding @ home is a prime example of a socialist project. You know, us crazy Liberals volunteering time and energy for the good of all humanity. Shouldn't your dumb ass be driving your F-150 to a death panel rally right now?
Read a book loser.
You'd be wasting money keeping it on.
And yeah environment stuff too.
Dragod, the ATI hardware in the Xbox 360 is of good quality- there is nothing wrong with it. It generates a good bit of heat, yes, but the main problem with the 360- the cause of the RRoD, is overheating. Yes the Xenos GPU produces a good portion of that heat, but it also doesn't have a very large or efficient heat sink. Not only this, but the Foxconn board, as with many Foxconn products, is of fairly low quality.
The ATI chip that is in there is also far more advanced than anything Nvidia had going for them at the time.
@Sam
Well, you can run folding at home on the PS3, which is a great reason to leave it on.
And the original Xbox with XBMC...
yeah, the old xbox's feel like a tank, but apparently the 360's are pretty durable too:
http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/12278/Unbreakable-Xbox-360-Survives-Car-Crash/
also, this guy should work his magic on a 360.
..."Folding @ home is a prime example of a socialist project." ...
No. I'm not being forced to pay taxes so you can fold at home and Stanford if not a government run college. Folding is still a consumer choice, not a program for everyone. Socialist does not mean "all projects that society works on together for a common goal." It encompasses any project that places capital and business under the control of government. Talk about ignorance...
@Mr Clickerson
I wasn't talking about the actual ATI hardware in the Xbox 360. I'm talking about the fact that Microsoft hired NVIDIA to design everything in the original Xbox. It ended up being incredibly stable and an overall solid system. Microsoft used its own in-house designers on the Xbox 360, and they focused more on low price, rather than high quality... That's why I wish NVIDIA had designed it, instead of Microsoft...
Now, let's have the designers of the Zune HD design the Xbox 360's successor...
I guess you guys never had the faulty DVD drives. Mine stopped reading most discs right after the warranty expired, and it always corrupted my KOTOR save files.
@ Andir3.0
Ok dumbass...
1. You don't pay more taxes if I decide to fold at home.
2. How am I giving capital and control to the government by volunteering my processing power to help stanford find a cure for alzheimers?
Your parents are related, right?
Whilst they are a funny shape, original xbox controller connectors are USB.
I'll just let you guess who the above message was a reply to.
