Coby's netbooks seemingly real, taking pre-orders
Sure -- we haven't seen or heard anything about Coby's netbook line since way back in January at CES, but that didn't stop them from showing up for pre-order, did it? Color us a little surprised, but here they are. Two models have appeared on Amazon for pre-order. The 12.1-inch Coby NMPC1220XPBLK apparently boasts a 1024 x 800 resolution, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, and a 160GB hard drive, while the NBPC1022XPBLK is a 10.1-incher with identical specs. The first runs $423, while the 10.1-inch model is $318. So tell us: will you be ordering one?

Nope. It's interesting to see Coby's attempted rise to mainstreamness, but I still remember when they were a no-name sony wannabe rip off that could only be found in inner city electronic shacks. Quality isn't their main concern, and considering netbooks general penchant for budgetmindedness, I won't be getting one from a company already infamous for crappy electronics.
@Noah Kim:
Coby is a joke. I vowed to never buy another Coby product when I was burned for the third time with a pair of ear buds/headset. My previous 2 burns were a digital picture frame (which I had given as a gift to my mother in law), and a MP3 player. Stay away from this shit people, you've been warned. I can only imagine how shitty this netbook will be.
where are they going to sell this product at drug stores, and swamp meets?
gotta love those swamp meets. met the creature from the black lagoon at a swamp meet once. nice guy.
I like my swamp meat, tender and juicy.
@Noah Kim
"but I still remember when they were a no-name [insert US electronics company name here] wannabe rip off that could only be found in inner city electronic shacks. Quality isn't their main concern,..."
I remember when this was a pretty good description of Sony.
@300 bucks, Im gunna blow a few of them up. Pics after the break.
Eventually netbooks are gonna become so common that they will sell them in drug stores. At $300, it isn't unlikely.
I steer away from swamp meets, especially in the Everglades. They're infested with alligators.
Coby is the only electronics manufacturer I trust.
You forgot "don't" there homie.
For audio, and years ago they were top, not so sure now. It seems every friggen electronics copmany is trying to cash in on the netbook scene. Coby is far from a computer company! Electronics yes, computers no. This netbook* = cheap shot and getting a few extra bucks to keep them afloat.
there doesn't seem to be anything that differenciates it from all the other netbooks out there
I can tell you've been paying great attention lately.
I am getting tired of seeing reports of a new netbook which has the very same thing as every other netbooks on the market. same Intel CPU, same crappy Intel graphic card, same memory, same HDD, same screen size, same, same, same.
the only diffrents seem to be the company selling them.
-
its time for a change, Please someone, AMD, nVidia, ATI, S3, VIA, anyone please
thats really what I meant
uh... FAIL.
Well IMO if it works just as crappy as the piece of shit Coby DVD player I bought for the kids you can expect a big fat NO! Maybe try improving upon your existing products and gain some consumer confidence, then make the jump into a new market...
Dude,
they went from making $1 headphones to making Netbooks, i think they know how to run their business. It takes a lot of scratch to work your way up like that. For that i actually admire Coby. I took the plunge last christmas and bought my mom a 800x600 pixel 8" LED backlit LCD frame by Coby, so far so good.
Respect the ascent son!
@ Mario:
I hate to tell you, that picture frame you bought for your mom last X-mas will crap out in like 3 months brother. Coby is a front for a ponzi scheme, that has to explain their shit electronics. I'm burned man, after those Coby headphones/headset I bought at the "swampmeet."
@ Mario - Just because they can make it, dosen't mean they should... Hope your mom's 8" LED TV holds up for you! "Fingers Crossed" :/
@djmanoloco
Christmas was over 8 months ago... just sayin'
"So tell us: will you be ordering one?"
Nope. I bought my EEE 702 for hacking stuff into for $129. I have a full-sized laptop, and a desktop. I'm set.
2.3Hr battery life is less than battery life on my 15" mbp.
Guess, for traveling light I'll stick with my HP Mini with HackOS on it.
Give Coby some credit. They are an American company based in Queens NY (where I live). They come a long way. To those who think Coby is a Sony ripoff, Toyota and Honda started out as GM ripoffs. Tell me what would you rather drive now? Things always change and tables always turn, always.
Id rather be driving somthing made in america, china=shit products, and id rather support our country and are fcked economy then buy a slightly cheaper, big ass matchbox car.
@tacomanmcjhonny
No Child Left Behind.
If these are released in Wal-Mart or another big-boxed retailer, they will sell like hotcakes.
Many women and some men, just don't know how to buy electronics and only go for price.
Hence, the reason why Coby is still in business.
it doesnt look right to me.
"12.1-Inch VGA display, 1024 x 800 resolution"
That's what I thought right away, too. They probably meant 1024x600. If it's really 800, that might be a reason to buy one. Those 600 vertical pixels are a real pain with many dialog boxes and even some web pages.
looks nicer than I would've thought, but why in the world would you get this when you can get a respectable netbook for the same price. You could even get the gateway from best buy with the amd processor for 40 bucks cheaper.
Well, I imagine all the innards are the same parts every other netbook manufacturer uses, so I doubt there will be much difference in quality of a Coby compared to a Gateway or Asus. Build quality of the casing and screen would be my biggest worry, and battery life.
I still don't think I'd buy anything from a company who sells the majority of their electronics out of Toys R Us stores, unless I could get a really good deal. But I know there are always those who will.
WHO in the fu&$#ng WORLD is going to buy this?
Oh yeah. Grandma's who buy it on Christmas eve at Duane Reade.
I thought they were going to go with non-intel processors and price at $200. Even if they priced at $300 for 10.1", it would have been a good deal given that other more established brands hit the $330-$370 mark (but offer WAY more battery life). What sort of price of $318?
Plus, for people who MUST have a 12.1" netbook, MSI is coming out with one, with better specs and probably at a way lower price. Coby need to step up their game; if any market is saturated enough as it is, it's netbooks. Too many better alternatives exist.
Ah finally, a $99 netbook to go with my $3.99 earbuds. What would we do without quality manufacturers like Coby and Dell?
Coby is probably putting it's own badge some ODM notebook. It could be from Compal, Wistron, Asus, Acer or worse yet some KIRF company in mainland China.
Perhaps.
(hacky hacky)
They make the worst products on the planet!!! I guess it will be on sale at drug stores
wow, what original specs, i wonder how they managed to come up with something so different from the competition
