Now that Toshiba's getting in on the
Blu-ray train, Sony needs to up its game. Enter a quintet of new players, each packing TV recording tech, overlapping feature sets, and seemingly nonsensical names. Starting at the low end is the BDZ-RS10, which sports a measly single digital tuner and 320GB worth of storage. Next up is the BDZ-EX30, adding a second digital tuner and a Blu-ray recorder into the action. Then the BDZ-EX50 moves up to 500GB of storage and adds PSP support, the BDZ-RX100 goes up to a full 1TB, and the BDZ-EX200 2TB. All but the lowest two support DLNA and can spin an hours worth of video to a
PSP or
X-1000 in under two minutes, meaning you could sync the entire Battlestar Galactica series in just over two hours and get your Cylon fix wherever you like.
Ha, i don't know why but that photo looks ridiculous.
"BEHOLD, OUR DVD PLAYERS"
and if that doesn't impress you, they have MODEL NUMBERS, too!
:P
It is rather silly. Back when the tech was new and exciting this would have been more interesting but now why would they waste this sort of money? Would probably more effective to send out a press release and some posters with simple bullet points. I love me some bullet points.
But they're BluRay players...
I didn't see that at first, but totally agreed. Love it.
I haven't been paying attention. Are Blu Ray players $35 each yet? I'm waiting patiently.
So are all of these going to be $1,000+?
The tech sounds nice but I don't expect that they'll be able to price them low enough to sell.
It is a shame that these seem to be Japan only.
These are nice, but where are the 5 disc BD changers to replace my 5 disc DVD changer? Perhaps these have the ability to store BD's to the drive for playback? Nah I'm sure that would be asking to much of them :/
The model names make sense to me. Based on the production descritions. EX models are the ones with BD recorders, & the number is an indication of the HD size.
I agree, but I believe we're in the minority. I currently have a BR player, and a 5-disc DVD changer. Given that I watch a lot of TV series on disc, it's nice to have the discs ready to go in the player, rather than have to swap them in and out all the time.
I expect we might see a BR changer within the next year.
Those DVD changers are very useful on watching complete season of a TV Show that most of the time consists of 3 or more DVDs right..
But imagine a whole season of your favorite TV Show in HD on a single disc.
;)
There are BD disc changers already, such as http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/23/sonys-blu-ray-megachanger-hits-the-streets-next-month-with-new/
"But imagine a whole season of your favorite TV Show in HD on a single disc."
In HD? It'll look like overcompressed crap. Seven episodes on a dual-layer disc seems to be doable (see Chuck), but I wouldn't want to push much more than that in HD.
Now, in SD...
Not really. You can get a $100 player at wal-mart, and buy movies for the same price as their dvd counterparts on Amazon, Walmart.com (NOT in store... they don't price match their OWN WEBSITE) and half.com. I picked up the Lost Season 3 and 4 BRs for $29 shipped brand new on Amazon. The DVDs are the same price.
I'm glad you posted your website, now I'll be sure to never visit. We are advertised in nearly every median and location in our lives. I'll be damned if someone gets to me through a comments section on a freakin' webblog. Put your lame arse site on your profile, quit posting it, and if people like you (which they won't because your a ad whoring bastard) they'll click on your name and learn more about you.
One thing I heard about Sony recorders is that the DRM contained within them are very restrictive... meaning that lots of TV shows that have the DO NOT RECORD FLAG will not be recordable using Sony units.. so this kind of defeats the purpose of having a Sony Recorder...
These aren't for the US market anyways.
For me, any show marked with a "DO NOT RECORD FLAG" (that my DVR observes and obeys) would instantly become a "DOES NOT GET WATCHED" show.
OK, this is something that drives me nuts, and I'm even a tech guy: Why do companies constantly stick to these ridiculous naming/numbering schemes? I can see using them internally, but what benefit is there to the end consumer to see BDP-S360? Or QX53xpb or motherboards where you need to learn a whole scheme for each company. Use damn normal names or get creative and create an *intelligent* system, not "is snow leopard newer than panther?" or "is Hoary Hedgehog the latest or is it Pilfering Platypus?" I know we like to be all sci-fi and high-tech, but seriously enough is enough.
@ teasphere
+1 for 'Pilfering Platypus'
Thanks, I'll be here all week, the roast beef is terrible.
I’d imagine being so condescending to any one of engadget’s non-spamming members won’t net you much more traffic; in fact I’m sure many of them are /i/tards that just love any reason to screw with someone. It probably would have been better if you didn’t reply at all and quietly were faded out instead of drawing more attention to you.
You are forgiven my child, for all shall be saved who giveth themselves onto the lord god Anticrawl. So saith he who is known as I am. (teehee)
Dead Tech...people don't need physical media.
Digital tuners are now defunct with cable companies like Comcast switching their bandwith all to digital and eliminating analog reception via cable w/ a digital transport box. By doing this the QAM tuners in TVs and DVR's w/o cable card input will not receive any over the air (via cable) HD or digital channels. They will have to receive the broadcast through the D/A box only. DVR's like this w/o any new upgraded digital receivers are already dogs.
So that's what happened to my HD channels! For several months, I've been wondering why comcast stopped broadcasting the HD channels.
I refuse to pay $100/month for digital cable when I only watch the HD programming on the major networks (CBS, NBC...)
Now I don't even get those meager channels...
Boo comcast... Boo~
Sony please release something like this for atsc in the states. I want a decent ota dvr with blu-ray pmp backup capabilities.
The one on the left is the "Teacher."
Many other producters are using Sony clips. It's cheap more than Sony original, but the quality is not gurrantied. I bought a DVR from http://www.hotdeals.com. Anybody bought from here? How about it?
