USB 3.0 logos now being handed out to certified wares
Aww suki suki now. With CES 2010 leaning around the corner and refusing to leave our periphery, we're getting more and more evidence that the January trade show will be a launching pad for a new suite of USB products. Several months after the first USB 3.0 cables curiously went on sale, the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) has announced the availability of the USB 3.0 Compliance and Certification Program. What's that mean? It means that a program is now firmly in place to provide compatible wares with a SuperSpeed USB logo, which in turn means that USB 3.0 gear is that much closer to retail shelves. So, who's anxious to slap a USB 3.0 PCI expansion card into their shiny new PC?

a shiny new PC should have 3.0 by default...
when do you think computer manf will start offering this? I am thinking of buying a Lenovo in October and I cant find any news about 3.0 availability.
Considering that there aren't any motherboards that support USB 3.0 on the market yet, no.
it'll definitely be expansion slot for a while ;) It takes a good amount of time for motherboard manufacturers to upgrade and then its only on the high end boards which OEMs don't go anywhere near.
OMGME
Reminds me of some type of mail carrier logo
Bronze Medal
The Super Speed logo has a '70s touch, which I like.
I think it looks retro, too, but I don't like it.
PEPSI!
"aw suki suki now" is the last thing i expected to read upon opening this bookmark
i have been slapped in the face with awesome
so how long until they outfit the macbook w/ this spec?
I'm sure when they do, it will be revolutionary!
When it becomes mainstream. Maybe just in time for the refresh of the macbook line in winter.
Once it comes to the Macbook the world can rejoice that Apple has finally invented a faster USB.
at least a year...they want all the current Macbook owners to feel content with there purchase, before they realize that by taking out the PCMCIA/Express slot and adding that revolutionary SD card slot they can't upgrade their macbook to usb 3.0 or eSATA...whoops!
why would it be any more revolutionary when they put it into macbooks? Its the same port with the same speed. if anything it should be less revolutionary for not having it first.
its not the same port... it has extra I/O...but is still backwards compatible.
@factionxvt408: Methinks someone missed the sarcasm.
not before firewire 3200 which is faster than usb 3.0 but apple just rakes developers over the coals with royalty fees
There's sure to be some money in a usb 2.0 -> usb 3.0 adapters. I predict few will know enough not to buy them. Monster cable koolaid-drinkers will be the first likely early adopters.
:-)
Why not at least change the USB connection from white to blue. All the connections we've seen have been blue, no?
from white? all the ones on my comps are black
considering that is a USB 2.0 cable...who knows what color they will be.
USB 3.0 cables look like this.
oh wait, it is blue
your dreams are fulfilled.

USB-IF , doesnt sound like they are too sure to me.
You mean it sounds 'IFfy'?
Thank goodness the PCMCIA/Expresscard bus speed can still keep up with the USB 3.0 speed and I can buy an add on card to my new macbook....oh wait....
Except the MacBook never had a PC MCIA / Express Card Slot, only the MacBook Pros ;).
I hope USB 3.0 is speedy enough so that when external hard drives with USB 3.0 come out, they will be fast enough to store games on... At the moment only eSATA is appropriate... and its not that widespread. Everything seems to be USB compatible these days... so maybe things will be better if 3.0 is widely adapted.
I store large games (Vanguard:Soh) on my external and run it from there with no noticible lag (usb 2.0). I don't see what you're talking about.
USB is a widely used format, so i have no doubt 3.0 will become mainsteam fairly fast.
Also, nice backlink
Unless something has changed (finally) in USB, it's not so much the speed as the massive CPU load that's the downside. It's why Intel was such a HUGE promoter of USB over Firewire. Firewire put everything in the interface chip, USB is all about the CPU. Connecting drives with USB over eSATA is like going from UDMA to PIO Mode4. Yay, progress. Haha.
Coming to an Emachines "This computer is NEVER OBSOLETE" sticker near you.
USB 3.0 looks kinda fat.
I'll be ready to jump when they have a perhiperal I want. I remember paying $80 for one of the first firewire and $80 for one of the first USB2 CF card readers. Now I'm looking for a home for them because I haven't used em in er.... 4-5 years now? Or jus throw them out when I move soon.
whats the physical difference between a 3.0 cable and a 2.0 cable? or is it mostly in the controller? because the speed jumps are ridiculously high, and its incredible being backwards compatible
USB 3 adds double the wires inside the cable, making for a fat cable limited to 3 meters max (USB 2 was 5 meters). It also adds warts to the USB B and micro connectors, making it impossible to use a USB 3 cable with USB 2 devices.
*PCI-E slot...
USB 3.0 is something like 5 times the bandwidth of the PCI bus, I believe.
PCI-E x16 is 16GB per second....it can handle it.
PCI-E is 16 Channels... that would be the point.PCI uses multiple 1x channels and true to form you won't have enough. Typical PCI-E is only 1-4 channels...Unless you want to tie up one of your 8x/16x slots just for USB 3? this is where you find out that vendors of cheap motherboards cheaped out on the 4x slots and used only 2 channels so they could have an extra slot,.. because "nobody makes devices for it..."
Another bag of hurt?
Since this doesn't have anything to do with movie studios and their requirements for licensing their DRMed content, I'm gonna say no. How soon people forget that Apple was one of the first companies to really push USB into the mainstream by selling a computer that didn't have a floppy drive.
i think windows 98 SE supporting usb really pushed it a lot more
Did you really just say "PCI expansion card"
Are you still living in 1996 or something?
PCI can't handle USB3 speeds, I guess that was a joke darren made about the PCI right? Or? Because yeah PCI now is ludicrous.
I am looking for a new wireless router/switch with Gigabit connections with a USB 3.0 file sharing connection (IE USB 3.0 Storage Link). Maybe something like a major upgraded Linksys WRT-610N router (and does not need to be Linksys brand).
Well just wait 14 months and check the hardware sites for new products.
watch, next week the new iPods will support 3.0 and MacBooks as well.
Knowing is half the battle. U.S. BEEEE
whats going to happen to mini usb?
It's can adapt to mini till devices get updated also I would suppose.
