Panasonic's 85-inch plasma screen is $30,000 worth of decadence
For anyone who can live by the credo that money is no obstacle is the way of getting the very best in your life, Panasonic's unveiled the 85-inch TH-85PF12U plasma HDTV. It outputs 1080p -- but we'd be honestly surprised if it didn't at this point -- and weighs in at 260 pounds, with its main body about 3.9 inches in depth. Price? Well, if you have to ask... it's $30,000 -- honestly not that surprising when you consider the years-old 103-inch model is still teetering around $45,000, give or take five grand.

What is the power consumption like on one of these?

?
no the question is Will It Blend?
@Complex: Looking at the dimensions of this thing I would say... no, it will not.
I saw the 101 plasma at Cinepolis Galerias in Monterrey Mexico
in the back label it says 1550w
sorry, not 101, 103"
I might get two of them.
I already have 4. You must be poor or something
Yeah, I had this one in my kitched over a year ago. I swapped it for a newer, holographic, set.
You guys must be broke...
Loocas already nailed it, "me too" joke fail :)
Whoops, meant lawyer bird, guess I fail hahaha
Oh honey, he's teasing you. Nobody has four TV's.
Yes everyone has 10, get with the program. BTW recession antidote?
Well... I guess I am a douche after all, ProfessorKaos... :/
That would fit nicely in my bathroom.
yeah, as one of your sliding doors ...
When on it emits the smell of burning money.
Sucks. Totally inadequate to stop punts in my living room.
excellent.
hmm......even if I had the money to spend.....I'd still prefer a really high end projector and upper mid-end audio equipment for the same amount of cash.......this is more of a demonstration of their ability and technical prowess than anything else...they dont really expect to sell too many of these.
....goes back to his dark little corner and opens another pack of cheetos...
I know someone that lived in a top floor apartment and had purchased the 103" Panasonic. They needed to hire a crane to get it up there.
My first thought when looking at the image: "Hey, that's a really small Panasonic logo."
hmm should i get this or a brand new car? a very tough decision indeed
Does 1080p even look good on a screen this big?
It sucked on the 103", that's for sure. I guess it'll suck less on this, but if you're watching it from 20-25 feet away, I guess it's ok.
That's useless!!!I would rather spend 5 grands on a decent SONY bravia projector and about 2 grands on speakers with receiver and install it in my room and be happy!;))))))) Oooh btw and buy a new car;)
Eh after seeing the 103" in Paris...this feels like nothing lol..But seriously that was fricken amazingg!!
$45,000 for the 103" - You lucky SOB's. Over here in Blighty, its still retailing for around £80,0000 - that's like $130,000?
But yeah, unless you own a mansion, its pointless - its too big for most peoples houses (certainly round here anyway). My projector is setup on around 100" (it only does 4:3) and we only use it for movies, xbox and the occasional F1 - everything else just looks daft on it and is almost uncomfortable.

Or just use it as a wall, no need for the bracket then.
Me? I'd save myself the 50 grand and buy an island, spend my days looking at the sea instead.
$30,000 for an 85-inch plasma. Or $3,000 for a projector and screen. That's not a difficult choice.
If your number one requirement is picture quality, then you're right, it's not a difficult choice...plasma all the way.
If they doubled the resolution or quad the resolution like they did with 150, and it looked as good as a Kuro, I could easily see charging 30K for this but this is more of a business use item than a HT item in its current design.
Supposedly these beasts are going to be unwelcome (import prohibited) in Europe because of their voracious appetite for electricity.
If you really want one, you probably have to ship it in yourself on your own private seagoing yacht. Do bring some pocket money anyhow if you find out you still need to bribe the Coast Guard, Harbour Patrol or Customs to bring it ashore.
Wow, it's very amazing, but I don't have change to buy them :)
