Still reeling over the
death of FlyWire this summer? So were we, until we saw this beauty pop up in Berlin. Philips Wireless HDTV Link promises to set your TV free from the tyranny of cables with an HDMI transmitter / receiver pair that'll let you place all those A/V components of yours a whopping 20 meters from your set. The base station has two HDMI connections, two component connections and boasts transmission of full 1080i and 1080p / 30 HD video. Coming soon (hopefully) this bad boy is retailing for €599.99 (about $850). [Warning: PDF read link]
I'll just wait for the MONSTER's version.
thanks, but no thanks.
.
I'll just wait for a version I can afford.
thanks, but no thanks for rubbing it in that I'm poor.
$850? I'd rather put a $850 down payment for a new grill for @thisisit.
Once these things get put out in mass, I don't see why they couldn't be offered at ~$100 or below.
I'm sorry, I was blinded by your avatar... you were saying?
$850!!??? for that kind of money I can have a wall rebuilt with any wires I want in it.. Stupid..
In theory, wireless everything would be cool. Dunno how well this will work but I wish Philips the best...
no audio?
HDMI carries audio... I would expect that this would as well.
HTPC to stream stuff wireless would make more sense
not worth $850
Very expensive !!!
Would be nice for projectors, if it didnt cost as much as one. Granted they won't support 1080i/p, but we have been using a USB wireless video adapters for projectors for a while now.
Wow they finally managed to do it and way over their projected price of $299 which they stated over a year ago. This was supposed to come out last September.
I have a problem understanding the allure of this technology, especially at this price point.
One potentially plausible use case would be being able to walk with a laptop up to an entertainment center, and start streaming picture and sound to the TV and the
... damn Engadget's javascript that moves focus to "Add Comment" button seemingly all by itself!
To continue: you still have to run a power cable to the TV, right? While you're doing that, might as well plug in an HDMI or a component cable too.
If you are not willing or able to put an HTPC + power + network cable next to your HDTV, you can have it somewhere else and stream HD. If you wish to use an existing media / web / file server, you don't have to buy another machine, get a special HTPC case, deal with heat or noise, have to run network cabling to the HDTV (some have it, some don't), and just have to slap in a good video card with HDMI output. I can see the practicality.
On the other hand, ridiculous price, and there are much cheaper solutions out there like the Dlink DSM-330 to stream from a PC to your HDTV.
Nice tech, but for $850 you can pay someone to run the wires in the wall for you and still have some left over for...other things. Or you could just do it yourself and have lots left over. Drop the price to about $100 and then it becomes a viable option.
$850 and only two HDMI inputs? Seriously?
So, I can hide the HDMI cable ... but what about power cord?
If I need to re-do my wall for power cord, how much more work is to put the HDMI cable into it, I really don't see the point here.
Agree that the price is a bit steep!
Perhaps they'll throw in installation by Victoria?
