OTOY uses AMD GPUs, black magic to put Crysis on iPhone
No need to dust off your spectacles -- Crysis on the iPhone has been achieved. Just last week we took a peek at the graphical enhancements on the iPhone 3GS, but this demonstration didn't rely on the factory goods from Apple. Instead, a recent OTOY demonstration put to use some of AMD's newest GPU technology in order to play back one of the leading-edge 3D titles on a smartphone. In short, OTOY renders the game on remote servers and then sends information to a recipient; needless to say, an HDTV displayed all sorts of artifacts, but on a screen that's just a few inches large, those flaws become invisible. So, is this really the killer app to supplant Apple's own App Store for gaming on the iPhone? We get the feeling OTOY needs at least few clean-cut commercials with little-known underground music before they can bank on that.[Via SlashGear]

awesome sounds promising.
Lets be realistic. Outside of the PC Gaming world, no one knows this game exists. At least not until a sequel finds it way to 360 or PS3.
Furthermore, this game is a regular FPS who's only innovation is wide open spaces and graphics that required you to break the bank for hardware. The nanosuit isn't that much different than Master Chief's with the exception that you decided when to activate the special abilities.
and they think they can put this on iPhone? It will look like crap.
I just find it really funny that they consider the iPhone in the same league as the PSP and DS. Sure, there are tons of games for the iPhone, but almost all of them (or probably all) are casual games. Games that you would typically find in cellphones, only with better graphics.
As for FPS games, it wouldn't take a genius to find out that it will be a crappy experience without any buttons.
@blitzkrieg:
Indeed, I just laugh quietly at Steve Jobs every time he mentions the iTouch/iPhone as a gaming device...
But does it PLAY Crysis?......NO! :)
What a misleading article. Streaming is not the same thing as playing, guys.
Before you mock the iPhone/touch as a gaming device, I want you to download and play Star Pagga, Galaxy on Fire, Modern Warfare and Isotope.
The mere fact I can play multiplayer games on my phone which is roughly a 3rd the size of a PSP, is enough to merit it as a gaming device that hasn't matured yet.
The only reason I have problems with the iPhone as a gaming device is that
#1 the accelerometer control is tighter than the virtual joysticks but, its only good in flight/driving simulators.
#2 Playing a game for more than 15 minutes cuts my battery power for the day.
If Apple wants to make the iPod a gaming machine, they absolutely need physical controls such as the icontrolpad and they need the snap on controller to have a built in extended life battery.
Where do I plug in my mouse and keyboard?
Oh, that's right. Apple doesn't want to support them.
the iPhone doesn't need a mouse/keyboard.
It needs an icontrolpad like device for the Dpad and the buttons plus the accelerometer.
This way you could use the D-pad to move around, the accelerometer to look around and the action buttons for shooting.
@Quantumphysics
The gamepad idea has been thought of but never with the extended battery life, great idea. As many people have said before though it must be made by a third-party company. Now that they released the dock connector to peripheral developers, its on the table for anyone to make a crap load of money.
But I don't agree with you on that it is not an official gaming device, Its technical specifications are better than the PSP and WAY better than the DS. It has accomplished great multiplayer experiences, and great FPS's without uncomfortable controls. Now don't get me wrong here though, a Control Pad add-on would make it a world better though.
Buttons, analog sticks, extended battery life, and maybe built in Motion Plus-- you know-- with the Electronic Gyroscopes.
What you guys don't realize is that because the iphone doesn't have pokemon, it can never even hope to be the best handheld. Pokemon=instant win in the handheld wars, as we've seen.
Goodnight, sweet meme.
Why just the iPhone? Could be on any number of handhelds. Streaming games seems to be a big trend right now, I'm interested in how it works out.
This could be any handheld. The iPhone no more is playing this (barely) than I would be by playing a Youtube video of it on a PC running WindowsMe.
I suppose I can understand why they used the iPhone just because it is so popular, but they could have easily said "smartphone" or even "mobile device" to include PMPs like the Zune. Unless there is already an OTOY app in the App Store, which would certainly justify it.
seriously, Palm V can even do this. Whats up, Engadget?
@Red
They only demoed the iPhone.
Why? Because nobody except for nerds cares about the touch diamond2 or HTC Hero.
@Brian:
That or that the iPhone is the most overrated phone in the market, therefore every other blog entry has to be Crapple related. Gizmodo is the exact same way.
The iphone is the most powerful phone on the market, thats why.
Oh how quickly you all forget the tests done when released... keep in mind its 22% faster than the pre, making it numbero uno in the playing field.

"Why? Because nobody except for nerds cares about the touch diamond2 or HTC Hero"
Exactly. I'd say that you hit the nail on the head, but it's more like you headshotted that darn nail lol
Good lord, you guys are so terrified that someone is going to have a positive thought about an iPhone. Get a grip, nerds.
Awesome references E-Man. The iPhone Blog and AppleInsider. If I wanted fair and unbiased benchmarks I know that I would start there.
You either have to be a fool or be very lazy if you think the iPhone is the most powerful smart phone device.
So it could run Crysis after all. We shouldn't have downranked the trolls.
No it doesn't run Crysis.
It only displays and controls Crysis.
Yeh, I know. Just wanted to say that.
Oh i would love to shoot 2px wide heads with 1 px wide bullets...
I bet the iPhone can also play impressively realistic 480x320 videos, be they Crysis, Halo, or Three's Company reruns.
@UnixSystemsEngineer:
LMAO. Makes you think how awesome GBA games were back in the days, doesn't it? Compared to these little mini-games that someone pass as `actual games`.
Loved the lag in doing so, too.
how is this any different from streaming a video if everything is done on remote servers?
because it is a game and not video?
It is like playing your XBox on your phone via a slingbox.
Have fun playing first person shooters on a touch screen
No.
But...that's cheating almost.
yeah, and there's no video to even demonstrate it. what gives? EVERYTHING of note should pretty much be accompanied by a video, right?
Sounds dandy. But I prefer not squinting at a tiny screen looking for North Koreans to kill. Mayhaps some "720p output" could help fit the bill. If only there was a pmp that could do that....I might have heard of it over the summer...once...twice...
That would be hilarious if the Zune HD killed OnLive.
Yes... that device, I think it was called the Zune HD or something similar. OnLive wouldn't stand a chance, especially if someone came up with wireless controller for the Zune HD...
It's going to be hard to play without a CONTROLLER!!!
wonder how many frames per minute it gets.. im still down.
oh hi there, heil!
My only problem with this is like to have my games on my computer, not some remote server. And I don't like paying to keep playing my games to their full extent either (See xbox live)
Ah, but will it blend?
Yes, in both biliniar and trilinear modes.
latency issues.
Bye Bye Battery Life.
Like netbook is to gaming, why would a game on a iPhone/iPod touch be any different to battery life?
Great news! Crysis should be accessible to everyone no matter where they may be. It seems that the new president is really coming through. Just super.
