Windows Mobile 6.5: a family portrait

A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
How many of them, aside from the TouchPro2, might compete with current "big" phones.
The TG01 for sure beats the biggies in hardware. But I don't think that's what you're getting at. Honestly I don't think anyone going to look at a WinMo unless they walked in looking for one. Anyone who's smart enough would get a WebOS or Android, possibly an iPhone. And anyone else won't know why Windows is on a phone and will get one of the billions of touchscreen/qwerty featurephones.
so here's how i see it... Tilt 2 and Pure are siblings... Tilt 2 is seeing GM750 but is cheating on him with the Imagio... Pure is out to kill TG01 cuz he sold him out to the cops over a meth bust and grand theft... Intrepid's ready to commit suicide cuz nobody loves him and Imagio seduced him out of all his money (Imagio's dirty... don't ask why)... HD2 (tho not pictured) is god and will destroy them all upon arrival. idk.... seems like a pretty messed up family to me... they put up a pretty good front for the portrait tho
Oh, snap! The Wow stops Now... First, Microsoft candy-coated Vista for Windows 7. Now they candy-coated WinMo 6.1 for WinMo 6.5. Foundation makeup covering the same underlying ugliness.
Hey look at that, we just candy-coated your comment. Gotta love vanilla!
HTC is committing suicide by selling WinMo smartphones. All their fine hardware is saddled with an out-of-date operating system. Sticking WinMo 6.5 on their handsets are going to do nothing. They should stop building WinMo-powered smartphones and move on to Android. HTC is losing money quarter after quarter and basically WinMo is to blame. Most companies are dumping WinMo and HTC would be wise to follow suit. They just can't afford to take good hardware and stick shyte on it and then expect to make any money. WinMo 7 is a big question mark and is going to be released many months from now. I hope HTC can hold on until that time.
Wait, is that clockwise? Or am I looking at it wrong, because it seems to be clockwise would be Tilt 2, TG01, GM750, Intrepid, Pure, Imagio... am I missing something?
Of course, it's not really circular, more like two rows, in which case the description makes more sense.
heh, i thought the same thing...it's totally not clockwise, it's left-to-right, first the top row, then the bottom row.
I headed for the comments to see if anyone else was lost by their "clockwise" reference. Glad to see I have company..
Where does Engadget find some of these people?
Yeah, totally messed me up.
I got to reading "HTC Pure (AT&T)", and was comparing it to the phone in the picture which says Sprint/Samsung, and was thinking sump'ins wrong
yeah, definitely not clockwise.
5 comments before mine? Aw.. I guess I'm not that quick-witted after all.
DIGITAL CLOCKWISE :)
We are in a gadget blog :) None of those old analogue things here!
WM6.5 WebOS Android Symbian and iPhone.... who dominates???
Palm OS 4 life yo! (Er, though not Palm OS 4- that's too out of date even for me)
Palm OS follows by WinMo. :)
what is up with your question marks?
wtf?
I'm happy for you, and Imma let you finish, but tony has one of the best question marks of all time, ALL TIME!
There is no one answer. Each OS has it's specific market:
WM 6.5 for business power users.
Android for the consumer that does not like to be locked into a closed system.
Iphone for consumers who DO like to be locked into a closed system.
Web OS fits somewhere in between a business OS and a consumer OS.
Symbian for techy folks who like the development platform.
looks like someone forgot to turn off his east asian input method before typing punctuation marks
absolutely right。。。
correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you named those clockwisically. I actually didn't know what those phones were, so it was confusing for a minute... you should have said "Starting with the top row, left to right..." or something like that. Anyway, I figured it out now.
You missed the HD2 ;)
yeah, the poppa bear
Ah. I love windows mobile. I've been using it for about a year : ) I have a t-mobile dash with a WinMo 6.5 rom, I have windows marketplace, and I enjoy long walks on the beach with my Windows 7 Laptop :D
What a beautiful family! Let's not forget about the bastard children (flashed ROM WM devices).
wheres the leo?
you couldnt photoshop it in?
Yea, was kind of expecting to see it. Would of been nice to see it randomly edited into the video.
Oh thank god the Tilt 2 doesn't have that god-awful numpad split we saw in the teaser images.
Also I'll use this space to say I'm disappointed that AT&T didn't stick with the names "Warhawk" for the Pure and "Fortress" for the Tilt 2, could have been the two best sounding names in wireless.
The picture reminds me of a bunch of cheap gadgets ready for ebay auction. :)
*sigh*
The majority of them will look like cheap iPod rip-offs to the untrained eye.
But not for long.
A revolution is coming. Watch out, apple.
double *sigh*
What's up with the audio in the video clip? Are you filming in an Avian discothèque?
Is it just me, or does anyone else not see the point in the 240 x 320 screen on the intrepid. I though we were past the bad old days of QVGA. It's like a Jack with a touchscreen. Ewww.
Por que es Windows Mobile muy mal? No comprendo por que todos dicen es muy mal.
Yea, Windows Mobile is pretty awesome. I agree these new devices are looking pretty awesome.
I'm on a plan for another year so I'll wait till Windows Mobile 7 myself.
which one is the HD2/
none of 'em... i was expecting to see it too by some weird voodoo
D'AAAAWWWWWWWWWW
I’ve been running Winmo 6.5 for months now. I have to say it’s the WORST interface I’ve seen in a while. Why do I need MASSIVE text labels like “Voicemail”.. etc, that cause needless scrolling. I’m not an iPhone fan by any means, but they got the interface right. How about an Icon with a superscript or subscript number for indicators.
Also – the HTC addon is another culprit. Needless scrolling, for the sake of a Massive clock on the home screen. We all need the time displayed larger than life right?
Um.. what 6.5 are you running? Mine have tiny labels, looks very similar to the iPhone except in a hexagonal formation.
still not impressed, ppl held their breath when they saw webOS, cried tears of joy for iphone OS, and straight fell in love with android. The same ppl see the new windows mobile and are like "oh, ok...movin on." try some thing new microsoft, completely new.
That's counter-clockwise, Engadget.
I agree, but don't you think winmo still has an uphill battle to fight in re-asserting itself in the smartphone realm?
wtf?
Can I haz them all? :(
exactly
Will WinMo ever have multi touch i hope so
