Toshiba 43nm MLC NAND-based SSDs spotted in retail

If you were lusting after those 43nm drives that Toshiba recently started shipping to OEMs, we found a source for you. If you're in Japan (or comfortable ordering from Japan) ioPLAZA has the 256GB (2.5-inch) SSDs listed for ¥85,800 (about $970). Intrigued? We bet you are. Orders placed now ship later this month. Pocket change...
I doubt my piggy bank has enough to cover this.
Dr. Strange
Well hell for that price I'm going to get 5 and RAID the suckers.....or maybe not.
i love the concept of SSDs but i find the prices to be a huge load of BS
Prices are hardly a load of BS on these. The fact of the matter is that fast Flash is expensive. This is not the same Flash you get in those SD cards. This stuff is much faster and therefore each cell takes up a lot more space. More space on Silicon means more cost.
The cost of any semiconductor product is inversely proportional to yield, which is inversely proportional to area of each chip. Thus the cost of said semiconductor is directly proportional to the area of the semiconductor. Of course this is largely a generalization, but the basic idea is true.
That's not the reason it's expensive...these companies are investing millions developing new technology, fabrication plants and employing PHD graduates plus under corporate pressures to deliver their 2010 budget and return on that investment. It's nothing to do with cells being 5nm bigger.
=1 to poulan. And, he explained it without trying way too hard to look like intelligent *cough shyam cough*
i'll stick with my p256 raid 0 thanks.
And, with 34nm Intel SATA SSDs available now for a fraction of the price and with significantly better performance, how does this even /matter/?
Indeed, inquiring minds want to know.
Better performance? Where did you see a comparison?
Better check yourself.
SSDs' performance is amazing!!! At least 3 times faster than regular drives indeed!!!
Toshiba drives fail, consistently.
I guess I could sell my 50TB Holographic MicroSD card and pick up a couple hundred of these...if only I could just get the rudders on my yacht unblocked in Monte Carlo...well, first things first.
Fraction of the price is due to the subtle fact that the Intel SSDs are currently available only in 80GB and 160GB capacities. This one is 256GB.
And also keep in mind, the price is at parity with this class of 256GB SSDs -- about 80,000yen.
The increase in cost is due to the fact that the US dollar has fallen significantly against the Yen, currently about 1 USD = 90 JPY.
Were the dollar at its previous value prior to the economic downturn (about 1USD = 120 JPY), this would be around $660, within batting distance of other 256GB SSDs currently available on Newegg et al.
Should've been @ethana2
just get an intel ssd
