Google Audio music service launching soon? (update: seems it!)
So TechCrunch has it from multiple sources that a US (at least) music service launch from Google is imminent. Possibly named Google Audio, it's unclear whether the service will stream music from the major labels and/or offer it as downloadable tracks. Scuttlebutt says that the service will differ from Google's free, search and download music offering available in China since 2008. Now go ahead, kick back and imagine a Google music service tightly integrated with Android while we dig for more details.

Update: Looks like Google's planning to dive on in with iLike and LaLa, and the whole shindig may end up being called One Box.

Adsense supported and all the music you listen to will be searchable.
I don't know about you, but if I'm getting my music for free, I'm willing to accept some ads.
That said, I'd also be extremely interested if they would launch a paid subscription service.
As an iPhone user, one of he main reasons I haven't gone to Android is because I have all my music in iTunes, and it works well. If Google Audio offers a similar (or likely better) experience, there's no way I'm gonna continue to take it up the ass from AT&T.
Oh man... That Dell MID looks kinda sweeet!
crawdad, I can't make sense of your comment. You have your music in iTunes, so you can't use Android? If they're just MP3s, you can sync them to any device using other software. If you mean that you bought your music from iTunes, that's a mistake. Amazon MP3 store is cheaper, and the MP3s don't have DRM, so they're portable.
Hey crawdad689,
Might want to check out Salling Media Sync. Puts my iTunes playlists on my Android myTouch just fine. The slower version is free too.
ads can only support so much
Anyone using Grooveshark? Think it could be similar to this?
Their free (download + streaming) music service in China works pretty well, the ads are no where near intrusive, not much more than a normal Google search page. I'd like to see something similar here, but I doubt that's ever going to happen.
CtrlBurn, Itunes songs no longer have DRM as you imply.
@Kinger
I've been using grooveshark for a few months now, and I have to say it' awesome. I really hope this is like that.
gTunes app?
They can name it as gTunes, gAudio, gMusic, geesongs.. gawesomeness
gSpotify
I prefer gBeats ;)
I prefer gStrings, as in violins.
"gStrings"... ok, it took me a while but now I get it.
I don't know about you guys, but I don't think about violins when I hear "gStrings"...
@jorgem817
You're an idiot.
gStrings is pretty good.....but gClef has got to be the way to go!
"G strings, they always give you the most trouble." Quoting my friend while he was tuning his guitar.
I broke my gString while fingering a minor.
Can't wait, hope its cheap!
Hopefully, this will be better thought-out than their previous Google Video service.
And hopefully it will be a little innovative: Right now, in the US, Lala seems to be the innovative music service to beat for purchasing/storing and Zune Pass looks to be the best option in the subscription department.
I thought Google Video service is YOUTUBE, and its superb!
Well it is now because they bought it, but there was a separate google video service at some point.
I hope it is Picasa - but for music. Another music manager with Google's attitude would be pretty sharp.
In Europe and others, SPOTIFY FTW!
I actually preferred Google video to YouTube, from a technical standpoint. I felt it had a more advanced video player (at the time), better layout and superior searching capabilities.
@RoroCo, like Alco said about Google purchasing YouTube for videos, google purchase Picasa as well, and did not create it. At least google seems to have a good taste in applications...
Google knows just what to acquire.
I really can't wait for your photos and videos to automatically sync to YouTube and Picasa with 2.0 (I think I saw them say that is an option)
If it's not, I'd really like for them to make it an option. Thank you Google. LOL.
Google Video was better than YouTube. No (or at least very relaxed) time/file size limit for video, plus you could download the originals.
lol damn Microsoft gets owned one more time. MS was/is supposed to launch a free miltplatform music service this fall (codenamed Omni. delayed or dead now?) : http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2009/09/25/microsoft-getting-ready-to-launch-a-global-music-service/
Please let this be an international music service! You bloody yanks are spoiled for choice while Oz is stuck with just BigPond Music and Bandit.fm, not to mention a complete dearth of any subscription service.
Please Google show some love down under!
We "bloody yanks" didn't get this first either, so don't feel too bad.
Awesome, they are rolling out a music service (one that is not doomed to fail from the beginning like so many others). I want to see exactly how they are going to do this one.
I hope this goes through for Canada as well. Im still waiting on Amazon mp3.
Then again, this IS canada.
Well, hopefully we'll see something pop up at google.com/music pretty soon, considering it's clearly been faux'r04ed.
Hmm, I think Google is heading to become the third-wheel of the computational world. Maybe in the next decade, Google will be making hardware and all that jazz. Google may be heading ti become something like Apple and Microsoft.
Is there anything Google won't do?
Google won't do hardware. They are an marketing company. EVERYTHING they create is meant to feed their advertising business. Hardware doesn't help them with that.
I doubt Google will do gMen, a gay search site for hooking up with other gBoys.
To be honest.... When I got an e-mail from a friend with the @gmail.com .... my first thought was... "Oh, he came out of the closet". At first I thought gmail was short for gaymail... but boy I was wrong.
At first glance this looks like a "me too" entry into the music space. Whether or not it is will depend upon how Google executes this. Can they bring their same innovation "Huh, that's kinda' cool . . " feature build out to music? Can they leverage their advertising backbone to make the music cheaper or free? Guess it's wait and see.
I concur, this is simply a push into a market to increase the chances of their mobile OS succeeding. I'll stick to my Zune Pass, it's not free, but it's highly functional and has everything I'm into right now.
This is a desperate but expected move on the part of goog. They know for their phone OS to suceed they need a music service like iTunes or Zune Marketplace.
How bout it having loss-less audio instead of MP3's?
i think everything makes sense for google to pull out this service real soon since chrome os is coming out next year
Everything is going web-based. That is just the natural evolution of everything. Google just happens to do the web pretty well.
knowing Google, it will be all PD music.
HITS OF THE 80'S!! (the 1880's)
"Scuttlebutt says that the service will DIFFER from Google's free, search and download music offering"
If that means "not free," then you've lost my interest.
Even Google has to pay the wolves and sharks at the RIAA.
I'm guessing you're a Limewire or other file sharing user?
