It's DROID week, and that means we're doing the podcast live. Josh, Paul, and Nilay will be going on-air at 4:30PM EST to talk about what Motorola, Verizon, and Google's impressive new smartphone, as well as the other big stories from the week. It's all going down soon -- and you can jump into the chatroom below right now.
P.S.- Leave your DROID questions in comments, and we'll definitely try to get to them if we can!
Update: Things got a little crazy at the end, but we definitely had a great time -- check back tomorrow for the regular podcast post if you missed it!
I tweeted this to Josh already, but - Any ideas why Moto went with the Power VR SGX530 (14 M polys / s) vs the iPhone's SGX535 (28 M/s) GPU? It sort of needs it with that big screen.
There was a conversation about this on HoFo. I don't think the iPhone 3GS has the SGX535 after all.

@Abe : thanks for the link. bcpk is actually me, but the thread which I got the (I guess unsubstantiated) info was from gdgt - http://discuss.gdgt.com/motorola/droid/general/550MHz-or-Keyboard-deal-breaker-/
Is Josh's wardrobe on the agenda? It seems to be a popular topic!
Everyone has bad dress days. A v-neck with a light pull over sweater was pretty bad. He could have done worse and he usually dresses nice, must of been an off day.
I find it odd that so many people seem to care about how he dresses. This isn't a fashion blog.
Josh is a technophile posterboy, he hasta front.
How is the keyboard on the DROID compared to the HTC Fuze / Touch Pro? Knowing that is about the only thing keeping me from jumping right on it.
Adding on to that - everyone seems to say that the Touch Pro 2 has the BEST mobile keyboard out there. I noticed that the Droid doesn't have offset keys. Horrible mistake in my opinion. What do you think of the keyboard?
A month or two ago, BGR had a showcase of the device, but promised it wasn't the finished model. It looks to be EXACTLY like what they revealed. I was expecting a better positioned D-Pad and offset keys. What in the world changed between then and now?
Is Android 2.0 support native Arabic? Thanks!
can you use the iPhone headphones to (answer/hangup/pause music)?
Do we know what the starting monthly fee to Verizon is yet? Also, what are activation, sms, and data fees?
Thanks guys!
What are your thoughts on Sony's latest financial report?
any chance Google may decide to port their awesome GPS app to the iPhone?
When will we see a GSM Droid, I don't want to switch to Big Red...I like the little pink
What do you guys think of Jon Gosselin?
Does the DROID charge when it is the docking stations (i.e. the media or navigation stations) or do you have to separately hook up the charging cable?
Do you think the Sony erricoson phone will top this? Mind my spelling.
Instead of correcting spelling errors, you opted ask for a pardon for them? Do you work for Engadget?
The reason I said this was because I spelled ericsson, and I wasn't able to check the correct spelling due to my resources. I wish I worked for Engadget. =p
But...I'm confused. You can use the same resources (the interwebs) to figure out how to correctly spell 'Sony Ericsson' that you use to post on Engadget. It's a series of tubes! Informational tubes! :P
if i'm poosting on my phoune (witch i can only have 1 tab in wab bowser), i'm not going to look up howl to spell somthing carrectly.
That's the position I was in.
You said in the review that the DROID has probably has multitouch capabilities, but just hasn't implemented them. Does that mean we could be seeing multitouch sometime, or is it impossible?
Has anyone confirmed if BB is getting the Droid on the 6th? I preordered but they kept beating around the bush when I wanted them to confirm I could be there @ opening on the 6th and pick it up.
Are there any phones coming to the Droid "family" on Verizon within the next 6 months to a year that you believe would be a better device than this base Droid? For instance, the Dragon/Passion, and if so, what are the important differences?
GUYS: WE NEED a practical comparison between the Droid and the N900. Both amazing challengers. If you won't make an article about it then at least comment about the two in the podcast please.
I need to know which one to buy.
Hmm... the one that doesn't have a resistive touchscreen.
You and I are on the same page, ProfessorDex. In all honesty, I don't think that these companies deserve to be sued. Other than acts where negligence caused property or body damage, or if the company repeatedly fails to respond to customer complaints and has no other choice, should the legal system be brought into the discussion.
I spent about an hour in the Verizon store playing with the Storm, and simply walked away disgusted. These guys had plenty of time to refine this product, and no, it didn't have to be perfect out of the gate.
It's the hypocrisy of the whole thing that bothers me. Apple manages to bring to market what is arguably the most amazing piece of personal tech in this decade (having zero prior experience in this market, mind you), and people search for highly creative ways to punish them. On the other hand, you have RIM (arguably the best smartphone maker in the world) coming to market with this thing (and I was so looking forward to it, being a long term Verizon customer), and they get a free pass of sorts (so I suppose that I'm stuck with this piece of junk Palm 755p).
If we're going to be a litigious society, can't we at least be consistent about it?
Hey do you think there will be a firmware update that fixes some of the laggyness when flipping through the home screens? Why do you thing its laggy in the first place, seeing as though it has a good processor?
Thanks
Have you guys ran into any issues with the more popular Android apps like 3banana and AK notepad on the device?
Serious Question: Can I have the review unit when you guys are finished with it?
Ok, seriously. Just the verification on the multi-touch issue, as well as the internal 256mb "app" limit. Thanks. And Josh, keep rockin' that V-Neck.
How much does George "moneybags" Lucus get for authorizing Droid as a name?
What a weird subject for two people to post simultaneously. [see below]
This is a seemingly random question, but I was just on the "Droid Does" webpage and at the bottom it says "DROID is a licensed trademark of LucasFilm LDT"
Why not just NOT name it the "Droid" and save yourself the licencing fees?
Perhaps this is old news. Just seems odd.
It never ceases to amaze me how a terrible director & writer hit such a jackpot by lifting a Kurosawa plot (tenuous @ best) & putting it in space 30+ years ago...
"DROID" doesn't stand for anything. Just because the marketing people style it in all uppercase, doesn't mean Engadget has to follow their silliness, does it?
Not everything in the tech world is in standard case. We got used to it with Apple's iMac, iPod, and iPhone, after all.
Josh you pwn bro
Anybody else realize how the podcast started at 4:30pm but this post was posted at 4:58pm?
Wow Engadget. You'd think you'd want people to see your own podcast.
I want Engadget to let us know a few hours in advance (though preferably a day early) so I know when to tune into the live stream. Contrary to popular belief, we don't all sit in front of our computers 24 hours a day, and finding out these things hours after it's over is disappointing.
Is the Android 2.0 on the Droid GPU accelerated? Can you comment on whether graphical performance is faster than the Palm Pre (esp given that the Pre is not optimized for the same GPU)?
Got the first gen a android phone, I love it thank you very much, my company provide me a HTC PRO wih 6.1 WinMo, the touchflow didn't work quite as good maybe its a hardware problem, but am ready to give away my G1 to my GF so I'll get myself a Rachel post more details and video pls. Thanks.
android 2.0 or maemo on the n900?
LMAO on the guy who said josh is gona die lol
Someone should record it and beat Engadget to the punch, why should we wait 24+ hours?
I would if I wasn't at work outside poundin' the pavement.
I don't think even Palm Pre got more coverage than Droid here.. the phone will flop 1 million sold at most.
