There's no stopping the eternal tug-of-war between the
powers that be and
the hackers that will, and for the time being it looks like things are back in the hands of the hackers. As of noon today giddy jailbreakers can take the next step and go full-on with blacksn0w, the unlock for the latest 05.11.07 baseband (with tethering enabled to boot). And if that weren't enough, it looks like blackra1n RC3 is alive as well, with Mac and Windows support. What are you waiting for? Hit the read link to get started, if that's your thing. And the battle for the iPhone's immortal soul continues...
geohot is a genius!
And he's so hot!
Creepy man, assuming you're a man..
Dutch hacker holds jailbroken iPhones “hostage” for €5. ;)
Here is a guide on how to install it:
http://www.iphoneos3.com/2009/11/03/download-and-install-blacksn0w-for-iphone-3g-or-iphone-3gs-3-1-2/
Harry Potter has done it again!
I agree, he's hot. Grow up Karim.
I think he's from the future
I just realized he works for Apple, hence the break apart. I just ran BlackRain and the first thing it does is download your phone statistics and presumable collects/emails them.
Blackn0w singing in the dead of night..
take these unlocked phones and learn to call...
all your life, you were only waiting for this moment to arrive
Uh... Oh, it's 'black snow'. Never mind.
@josh DMT trip?
actually, I meant 'black now'
I'll take bets on how long it'll take until "An update for your iPhone is available". :)
Where have you been - this is nothing new. It's been going on for 2+ years - back and forth.
you missed his point, calm down. *pats head*
Done and Donated!! This guy is awesomeness personified!
Unlocked iPhones FOAR EVERYWUN!!!
is this another app I can get for my iPhone? I'm trying to collect them all
Blackra1n is awesome. Worked flawlessly for my 3GS at 3.1.2. Props to him and I definitely donated!!
so update through iTunes with a 3GS and i'll be able to keep my t-mo? (after the blackra1n of course)
If the new version unlocks it then yes. I have 3.1.2 on ATT and it works perfect. I don't know about T-Mobile, but according to the original post the new Blackra1n should unlock it...
yep, works on T-mo
as always, just make sure you disable 3G in the settings app
Can anyone link me to a walkthrough on how to jailbreak my phone? This is my first iphone and my first attempt at jailbreaking. I'm dying to get soem custome themes and backgrounder...
Ah, just re-read the article. So this is Unlock only... no jailbreak yet?
Blackra1n.com? Click? Follow on-screen instructions.
Unfortunately I can't open the link from work (blocked), but reading around I don't really understand it all. I've seen people talk about getting stuck with tethered jailbreaks and some seem to indicate that that is what happens if you jailbreak from the current firmware version, rather than updating your previously jailbroken phone.
I don't want to bother trying this if I'm going to have to constantly plug my phone into my computer.
Are you a law-enforcement agent?

Dig thru this page/ site.
Heck no. I'm just a noob that has no clue about what I'm doing. I have a friend that could probably jailbreak the phone for me but he has a track record of breaking the electronics he is working on (he managed to blow out his tv and sound system while modding an xbox).
@Richard -
The process is much easier than it was a couple of years ago - but it is not for the lazy. You can seriously mess up yore phone.
Read - Read - Read - Read - Read - Read - Read - Read - before you do anything!
Most folks get stuck as a result of not paying attention to the process. Depending on what you are doing - usually it's fixable - except where the Mod Groups specify. the last time I update my iPhone from 2.x to 3.0 - I got stuck a few times - the update was fine and I had full access to my phone and content - but couldn't make any phone calls - setting in the software during the process - redid it and it worked.
Good luck!
Yeah - good friend [hopefully] but that sounds like my brother. Kidding about the cop question - no offense.
Just read until you feel like you really understand what you are doing.
You have to re-Jailbreak when you upgrade from one version to the next. So I've done it 2 times. First when I got my phone and next when the 3.0 came out - same process - but I paid more attention the 2nd time around.
Literally one click with blackrain. It loads up says [Make It Rain] click and its done. You even get to look at the devs face while it reboots. Then go in, you see a new icon everything else is the same. if you dont do anything at this point its pretty much useless. Install one of the installers, and go.
time to round them up and put them in Jail, let's see them try to break out of a real Jail!
Let see you not get Ranked Down into Oblivion!
@Name:
but i can't see anything above your comment........
nope, you will be ranked down into oblivion!
will jailbreaking my iphone with this application still allow me to receive apple software updates successfully?
Be more specific!
Updates to the iPhone Software - YES - but you will relock your phone and have to 'jailbreak' again.
Updates to various installed Apps - YES - no harm.
ah noobs.
It's pretty sad when a second-class hacker needs to copy the naming convention of the primary iphone hacking group. I mean Blackra1n was bad enough - but at least it was more subtle.
Whatever - I'm sticking with the Dev Team and their goods.
Second-class? You do realize geohot was the first to unlock an iPhone at all, and was a member of the Dev Team for awhile until he went solo?
The biggest thing I hate about the iPhone hacking scene is all of the goddamned infighting. Fortunately, it's calmed down to the point where pretty much all parties involved are willing to coexist relatively peacefully, building off of each other's work. greenpois0n, the latest Dev Team unlock, was based on an exploit found by geohot (although the Dev Team found it independently as well). Though there may be some bad blood between the groups, at least we aren't back in the days of the iPhone Dev vs. iPhone Elite teams and the other absurd wackiness that went on in the early days of this scene...
Christ, scenesters can be ridiculous - makes me thank God that the webOS community dodged that bullet by siding with a fully open standard-bearer, instead of devolving to cyber turf war like the iPhone and PSP scenes have went through during their histories...
If the Dev team found it independently - then it is not in fact based off of geohot's exploit. Besides - if you go digging - the Dev Team had in fact already found it - before geohot outed his release - except they were waiting on the Yellowsn0w fix to release everything at once.
Tehn a couple of days after goehot put theirs out - the Dev Team went ahead - because they realized it was the same thing.
Get over yourself.
iphone nerd wars...lulz!
This is a serious question as I haven't jailbroke since back in 2.0something. What features besides tethering can we get in JB rather than stock? I use to use VLC a little and it was cool for about a week having Quake on my phone but that was about all I did.
support for newer legit apps
Limited multi-tasking is the killer app for me - using Backgrounder, you can keep any app (App Store or otherwise) running while switching to another, allowing me to, for instance, keep Opie & Anthony playing in the the Sirius-XM app while I surf the web in Safari. It's not perfect - you have to watch how much memory you have left, because if you run low, the OS will automatically close apps open in the background to recover memory; and not all apps work correctly in the background because the way it's implemented is meant to fool the app into thinking it's still running in the foreground - but the pros far outweigh the cons for me.
Customization is another big boon for jailbreaking - not just skinning with WinterBoard, but other features like enabling the battery % counter on non-3GS devices, showing the date and free RAM next to the time in the status bar, showing more apps per SpringBoard page, etc. I don't want to be limited to what Apple says I should use, so I jailbreak to customize my device to MY needs, not Steve Jobs' needs.
This is an example of being able to do your own customisation stuff:

just did this and it worked spiffingly. all credit to gehot, he is pretty talented.
