Razer gets back to basics with $50 Abyssus gaming mouse
Razer's been on somewhat of a tear here lately with new input peripherals, and while most of the new stuff has been somewhat radical (or extremely radical, in some cases), the outfit is taking a step back with the Abyssus. The ambidextrous wired gaming mouse is just about the most vanilla product Razer has ever slapped its name on, but that's not to say it's unviable. In fact, many may appreciate the normalcy in design coupled with the 3.5G 3500dpi infrared sensor and on-the-fly sensitivity switching. It's available now in the outfit's webstore for $49.99 (or €39.99 in Europe), while the rest of the globe should see it emerge next month.

Cool, Razer makes great mice.
Gonna stick to my Mamba though. Love it!
Big fan of the Mamba here too...it has a few quirks (thank god for firmware updates), but I really love the feel of it. It was my first Razer mouse going from a long history of Logitechs, and I wasn't disappointed.
I did pick up the Naga as well for MMOs and some RPGs (handy in Dragon Age), and I was a little skeptical at first, but after a few days of use, I feel right at home...I'm lost in Aion without it. I have fairly large fingers and hands, and I still have no trouble hitting the thumb button I want. The 2nd and 4th row have a ridge, and the curved side separates the three buttons well. I was disappointed with the smaller feel in my hand, but realized that is so it tilts your hand to make the thumb buttons easier to press. The only thing I don't like is the damn cord. Ugh.
The Salmosa is the most vanilla mouse Razer's put out. This is just the Salmosa with a higher DPI sensor and what looks like a blue led.
I was going to say the same thing... at $50, you'd be better off getting the Diamondback 3G with more buttons and lighting (assuming you're paying MSRP). Street prices much lower though, I got mine for $30.
No thumb buttons? No thanks, I'll stick to my Deathadder.
If they added a glowing LED logo, it's not stripped down enough.
The DeathAdder drivers have an option to turn off the LED, I'm assuming these do too. Doesn't matter to me though, no thumb buttons, no sale.
A quick search found that the Razer Lachesis is going for $80 with the 4000dpi sensor. So in real terms this is going down a bit, to $40 I think. The 3200dpi Logitech G9 (original) is going for ~$50 but it does come with exchangeable grips. This Razer has more subdued styling, so if you want a "stealth" gaming mouse this almost works... except the glowing LED kinds of ruins that too.
Ooops sorry $60 for the Lachesis. typo
I'm pretty sure woot had something similar to this for ridiculously cheap the other day.
Yeah, they had the Salmosa for $13.37 + $5 shipping. It's essentially the same as the Abyssus, minus the LED and 3500dpi sensor (1800dpi is still enough for most gamers).
i snagged the Salmosa off Woot. i actually got my Lechesis off Woot for $30 a few months ago. my buddy got a DeathAdder and i know i've seen Copperheads on there. wait a few months and you can probably get this refurbed for $20. mine was a refurb and i have no complaints.
I'll stick with my MX518. :)
After the horrible Orochi wireless lag, I'll be staying away from Razer.
Yeah, except that this mouse ISN'T WIRELESS. EVERY wireless mouse has some level of lag, what are you expecting?
Maybe he got the Orochi mixed up with Mamba. That's the gaming grade wireless you want.
After the Orochi in wireless mode lagged worse than a $40 Logitech Bluetooth I had, I think I will be avoiding Razer.
aghhh engadget comment system
i post a comment, it doesn't go through. i check back three minutes later, the comment STILL hasn't appeared, so i send another one. and then they both show up.
seriously what the hell
and my most recent one complaining about the double post did not go through either, but i bet it will once i send this
It would help a LOT if you used proper spelling and grammar. Most people don't take blogs seriously when they're full of syntactical errors.
Thanks! I'll correct it ASAP. I never thought of that...
This commenting system really needs to be fixed!
Overpriced, get a G9 for 50 instead.
The G9 is a great mouse, but the middle mouse button is pretty much unusable. I regret wasting money on it almost every day.
I must be opposite of most people, I absolutely abhor and despise the thumb buttons. I'm always accidentally hitting one and going to where I don't want to go and normally loosing everything I typed into a text box.
I would probably pick this mouse over most others. I would kill for a Logitech MX1000 without the side buttons.
