Chevy Volt shows up at fast food joint, practices lines for LA Auto Show
You might've seen the Volt make a guest appearance on the futuristic Surrogates movie already, but now Chevy's taking the opposite approach by looking toward the past to promote its PHEV. Bob's Big Boy fast food restaurant in California got treated to a surprise visit by a production model of that most bodacious Chevrolet, and as you can see above, it doesn't look horribly out of place seated in among its elders, a 1969 Camaro and an Impala SS. Joining in the weekly classic car meetup hosted by the restaurant, this appearance was a prelude to the production Volt being shown off at the LA Auto Show, which kicks off this coming Friday. So if you wanna see it, you can either attend the event or wait for the car to roll up at your nearest Wendy's.

"as you can see above, it doesn't look horribly out of place seated in among its elders, a 1969 Camaro and an Impala SS"
no, the ugly box looks horribly out of place
@mrqs
You have NO TASTE!
I bet you are one of those Tuner losers who puts nasty LEDS all over your car and fart cannons and NOS stickers...
NASTY.
real men drive REAL CARS with 4 barrels, 6 packs and 8 barells..
AND we dont even need no skinkin Power steering...
enjoy your leather seats and traction control. REMEMBER that you are not a man. If you dont have to punch the shifter to change gears.
Loser. wimp
@mrqs
you must see it in the flesh (metal) to get it. Its still manatee shaped like the prius, but its really sleek. Sleek enough to barely justify the 40k price tag.

Does it really trouble you that much to have such a small dick?
@Name please learn to read
@dystroglycan fair enough, but i still reserve my doubts
@mrqs
I agree. I'm not quite sure about that statement. It look like just another 2010 american car. Sure it gets attention because its new and its electric, but, on look only, it doesnt fit at all.
Wow, the volt looks like a POS next to those REAL MAN CARS with the BIG CLOCK 4 Barell V8's, in some cases 2- $ barells to make sure you get a manly 2 MPG..
No seriously look at the people around the car. OLD and ugly.
So I guess GM is marketing to OLD and ugly, good market strategy.
I'll stick with my 1972 Pontiac LE MANs sport (in french that is "The MANS sport) as opposed to look at me I'm gay and free and I drive an electric car that is not super charged.
AHAHAHAAH!
supercharged > charged
@(Unverified)
if theyre old you must be what? 13?
@(Unverified)
So let me get this straight. You complain about it not being a BIG CLOCK V8, then you complain that only old people showed up to this classic car meet, and then you attempt to brag about having an "old mans" car yourself.
Bravo
@(Unverified) you're completely right......because marketing a $40,000 car to people in their 20's is always a smart move.....good luck on that whole gym teacher thing working out in the future.
@(Unverified) you mean big BLOCK right? I'm not really sure what a big clock V8 is... is it related to big ben somehow? Do the world a favor and seek out a Darwin Award immediately...
@NAME
A properly done electric car is faster than most of the fastest electric cars, including ferrari and porsche; both of which are faster than any Camero.

I hope they just release this thing soon and get it over with. I'm sick of reading about it.
The Volt also came to Cars N Coffee, Irvine CA on Saturday morning. (Thanks Max)

I think I saw a Chevy Volt in the parking lot at the Starbuck's in West Palm Beach next to the Maseratis and Porsches and Bugattis.
I saw a few of them this summer on I-70. They were covered in black cloth and had some sort of GPS/telemetry device on the roof, but you could tell by the shape. They also had Michigan "manufacturer" plates.
This wasn't the first time I've seen pre-production cars on the highways, either. Several years ago I saw a row of the new (at the time) Mustangs running down US-40 outside Winter Park CO with an F-150 chase vehicle (and again, black cloth and a telemetry device).
I think they need to test at high altitude.
@(Unverified)
Could have also been the new Cruze testing in the US - the shape is almost identical.
I'm thoroughly convinced this is being developed to kill off the idea of a usable electric car for the masses... The specs on this thing are freakin' terrible, when clearly they have access to the technology and means with which to make something infinitely more appealing to the masses.

It's a hybrid vehicle.
@(Unverified) It's an electric car with a gas generator used solely to create electricity... Electricity for a car who's performance is bested buy guys tinkering with EVs in their back yards the world over.
@(Unverified) No... the gas engine takes over when the battery runs out of juice.
@sitruc No... it's a Range-extended Electric Vehicle, according to Wiki. The gas engine provides power to the electric drivetrain.
@sitruc This car is in many ways the opposite of the traditional hybrid, in that the primary propulsion is electric rather than gas. There is no gas engine that directly drives the car, hence all the attention it's receiving.
It's still a hybrid vehicle. The gas engine may not power the drive train, but there is one in it which qualifies it as a hybrid vehicle. Also, the gas engine recharging the batteries makes the car even worse. Instead of power loss over one conversion (chemical to mechanical) you have power loss of 5 conversions (chemical to mechanical to electrical to chemical to electrical to mechanical). Not including loss between gears and connections.

@(Unverified) Not really the point... The whole hubbub surrounding this thing is that it's the first primarily electric only propulsion car made by the big automakers for sale to the general public. I could throw a Honda generator in the passenger seat of a Tesla Roadster and it would technically be a hybrid by that definition. Except that one is worth buying.
Sounds like Chevrolet, or GM, is going West Coast heavy with this car; L.A. Auto Show, appearances at eateries.
This is a direct attack at Toyota in Prius country.
@FrankTheCrank
California is one of the largest auto markets in the world and maybe the most important one when it comes to low emission cars. Not going West Coast heavy with the Volt would be plain stupid.
Meh. Moot point since the Volt sucks in real winter.
I want one....
where is that bob's big boy? I want to go to there.
@btprice2001
Burbank. There's a show every Friday night:
4211 Riverside Drive
Burbank, CA 91505

I really like the Volt's design but has someone here actually seen one? Is it all cheap plastic inside and out as most north american cars?
Bob's Big Boy is a diner chain, not fast food.
And that '69 has its front plate upside down. Bigger on the bottom, people!
I saw a Salean S7 at a Mc D's car show once. That was the last time I ever saw one.
I really liked the original concept design of the Volt, but they butchered it for the production model. If the specs are going to be just barely passable as a hybrid/electric car, I would have rather liked them to stick with the concept design and produce a regular gas guzzler.
"One of these things is not like the other ones one of these things just DOESN'T BELONG"
Impressive specs....and really hope they wont build the interior of this car with the cheapest materials available .... (try to fool customers and get fooled themselves)
