RED Scarlet 2/3 priced, detailed, and wanted
If you've been waiting for RED to release a product within reach of the prosumer class of shooters then this is it: the Scarlet 2/3. While the price is up from the original $3,750 lens and brain kit announced back in December 2008, an additional ASIC and four additional boards bring plenty of new features to help justify the price bump on this professional-grade camera. Scarlet starts with a 2/3-inch sensor in the $4,750 Scarlet 8X Fixed package (including "brain" and fixed 8x zoom lens, side CF module, REDmote, 2.8-inch touchscreen with "touch focus tracking," REDVOLT battery, and travel charger) or $2,750 for the Scarlet Interchangeable which includes the brain-only with adapters available for electronic RED, Canon, and Nikon glass. The resulting cam shoots 3k REDCODE RAW video at 120fps (150fps burst mode) and scaled 720p or 1080p recording at 60fps. Expect both models to ship in May or June assuming nothing goes wrong with the ASIC or firmware. Until then you can check the gallery for plenty of shots includes a glimpse of RED's mini primes and the 8x side-by-side with the 2/3 interchangeable.

Ooh they're donating one of these to my school...
I live in California, therefore it is more likely that my school is auctioning off its photo equipment just to keep the lights on. *sigh* Now I made myself sad...
@Lando Calrissian Please!
I saw the RED rep rolling the case with the camera in it to his car a couple weeks ago and I started drooling.
@Lando Calrissian
Where do you go to school!!? I want one of these so bad
@(Unverified) You know, buying the camera would be cheaper than enrolling in a program just because they have access to them
@Lando Calrissian
SMCHS in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA.
Please!
@Indefinite Implosion Yes I am.. I am back baby I am back!
I think Canon and Nikon just $hit their pants......
@SiriusDoggy Doubt it. It looks video centric,, and dumbed down press release language (8X Zoom Lens? What focal length??) doesn't even mention what resolution the stills are.
No doubt this is a supreme video system, it's not however a stills replacement so Nikon or Canon don't have to worry. Also their lenses will be mountable on Red so it's a win-win situation. If you look at it the other way, both Nikon and Canon will have 2k video recording on all of their cameras in next year or so, and more people will buy into a DSLR then a Red system due to lens investment (amongst other reasons).
So no, Canon nor Nikon have no reason to worry. :)
@SiriusDoggy I don't believe that Canon or Nikon need worry, as neither are specialized in just film. RED specializes in digital moviemaking and Canon and Nikon can stick to their guns; primarily DSLRs for digital photography.
@SiriusDoggy
There's a single reason why neither Canon nor Nikon are shitting anything, and that's because the Red doesn't have a pentaprism. this camera is priced at semipro/pro level and just ask a pro if they'll use a camera with EVF. this might perform better in the video field but I doubt it since tools like the Red One already do a pretty damn good job.
@SiriusDoggy
Uh.......how's that? If I were canon or nikon, I'd be laughing my ass off right now.
RED and a DSLR -- two completely different concepts. Believe me, this concept will not hurt the DSLR market in the slightest.
@SiriusDoggy
aside from this being a cinema camera, canon has another reason to not worry: only around 30 percent of Canon's revenue come from products like cameras...and i dont think Red makes copy machines
@(Unverified) Excellent point about the lens investment since the Red doesn't have Canon or Nikon mounts
@SiriusDoggy
Everybody in the film world laughed their a$$es of when Jim first announced he was going to make the RedOne and now look at it. Outside of the film realm it's about the only digital source movie-makers will consider now.
If Jim sets his mind to take a bite out of the DSLR world then I for one am going to listen.. Not that I'll be buying one anytime soon but......
And yes, I realize that digital cameras are but a small part of the Canon business model but the camera division of Canon just crapped themselves..
When was the last time you saw a Canon or Nikon DSLR ad that wasn't talking about it's "amazing" video capabilities?
BTW - Canon 5DMII owner...and I love it.
But I'd give up the Pentaprism in a heartbeat for an evf that actually allows me to FOCUS during shooting instead of the lame LCD panel on the back.

The 2/3 stills resolution are at 3K or at about 5MP.
the S35 stills are at 5K or at about 13.8 MP
But yes, it is an apple-oranges situation.
@JoeRodricks
Yes it does.
If 1080p is around 2k in resolution, how come this thing does 150 fps for 3k, but half that in 2k and 720p?
@(Unverified) Also, where are the buttons?
@(Unverified) I believe and don't quote me on this. But that it requires more processing to scale the image down from 3k to those resolutions. The Scarlet isn't just skipping lines of data like the DSLR's do. It's actually scaling each image down.
@(Unverified) Because 720p and 1080p recording modes are different. One mode is RGB i believe and one is REDCODE RAW.
@(Unverified) It does higher framerates when the camera doesn't have to process scaling as well. 120fps is the max at the camera's native 3k resolution, and it goes down from there as the camera has to process the scaling.
I just ordered mine! I can't wait to start shooting some awesome YouTube vids.
@Indefinite Implosion Or even decent 720p, for that matter. The bit rate is too low for even that to look good, yet they jumped on the 1080p marketing bandwagon.
@Indefinite Implosion
Nothing supports 3k yet. With the exception of 4k projectors, very few devices exist that can handle that much data. Besides, with providers like comcast throttling bandwidth, it would take like half an hour to buffer a 10 minute 3k youtube video of any decent quality.
I think i'm becoming somewhat of a RED hater and will continue to expect this stuff to be vapourware until i see something more than a render. How about some footage, some photos or just some youtube video from someones bloody phone to prove all this really exists.
Spec bumps, delays, price bumps, delays, release a render, delays, release a pr announcement but still no physical product.
@(Unverified)
Are you talking about a RED camera in general or the Scarlet 2/3? Because RED does exist. They do exist! **Both faint**
The new Denzel Washington movie "The Book Of Eli" that's coming out shortly was shot using a RED camera.

@Phranky Sure you've got the RED One, check that.. And then what?
My beef is that any company can tease with what we want to do but until there's a unit available in the hands of the user the stop hyping it.. A great example of this was the CrunchPad that officially died yesterday.
I wouldn't mind so much but with the Scarlet if it's real im in, but so far it's what at least a year late and no one has seen one, so for sale in summer 10 i'll still edge my bets on the red tagline of " Specs and time will change, you bet on it".
@(Unverified)
this is footage shot from a scarlet camera:

@(Unverified) Sanctuary is filmed with a Red camera. They greenscreen everything, so they needed a very high resolution camera.
@(Unverified) I've seen a RED camera in real life on a movie set in Central Park this summer. Their wares are real and the 2/3 will come out.
Any taco bell commercial. They shoot all on RED now..... why they finish in SD is a totally different head scratcher.

The reason the RED development process seems to take so long is that it's transparent from the start. Canon and Panasonic spend just as much time developing their cameras, if not more, but they don't give press releases until they're nearly ready to ship. The disadvantage is that the customers don't have any input until they have purchased the camera. With RED development, they get feedback throughout the process and can incorporate that feedback into their products prior to release. It's a good system, but it breaks some hearts too.
Hubba Hubba Hubba !!!!! :) Ohh Yea
What`s with the Canon D3 standing next to it?
The Red products are video cameras or what? Do they have dSLR capabilities or simply can use dslr lens?
@substance90 Supposedly you can use (with adapters) Canon, Nikon or Red glass..
@substance90
Canon D3... intersting.. :)
It's just to compare size .... and yes you have use different lenses on it - canon / nikon
@substance90
Lol, I really did write Canon D3 :D... anyway, thanks for the answer.
Make sure you max out 3 creditcards people, it's the american way remember?
OH DEAR GOD! I so want this one! :D
Sigh, more renderings and supposed release dates...
Just buy whatever you need now and enjoy. I know I am enjoying my Canon EOS 5D Mark II still.
@Andr
The photo you are looking at in comparison with the D3 is a real piece of hardware, smart guy.
Oh please the iPhone 3Gs has had a touch screen auto-focus camera for ages now... and its far superior.
pish posh who wants this tat?
I wanted this a year ago when it was first announced. Got the HPX170, haven't looked back since.
(won't be getting a RED, don't need all that)
This is almost as cool as my Macbook Pro! And your jealous of both you windoze losers!
They'll be releasing version of this with the larger sensors included in the Epic-X, what's the difference after that's all equal?
