Zii Trinity's HD playback gets a quick and promising look
It's over far too quickly, but in the video after the break, what you get to see is how well the Zii Trinity mobile prototype handles outputting HD video -- in this case, a very smooth playback of a snippet from Wall-E. Can we express more excitement for Creative's little platform that could? Probably, but we're already reaching pretty high. Now if only we could get some hands-on time of our own...

@iPhoneMessenger I hope you're joking. I don't want apple even looking at creative with those dollar signs in their eyes. Let alone buying the company.
@iPhoneMessenger
If Apple did buy the Creative Zii, it would be really good for both companies. Not only will Apple get a superior iPod Touch hardware-wise (integrated GPA, two camera, etc.) and software-wise (because of the ability to run Apple's OS AND Android), but Creative would finally have a product go mainstream. But... we can only dream.
@iPhoneMessenger
Must all your comments be apple related?
@usb
Finally go mainstream? Uh... were you using a computer in a 1990's when a Sound Blaster card or a GUS was pretty much the only way you'd want to go? Creative had that old-school ISA card and chip market cornered in the 90's.
@Level 5
I was about to comment something similar..
The video is a lie!
The video is not cake, it is not a lie! The cake is a lie!
@SamTime *continues....* and pi is infinite truth!
What about the Egg? :( I'm still hoping and praying for the Egg. Also hope they up the resolution of the screen of the Egg. I know you can't see it all, but I want more crispies!
I'm torn, it looks great, but this is from the same company that can't seem to design a sound card and proper software. How can they be trusted?
please someone explain to me why i need HD output video on a PMP? is that those long subway rides to work, so that i don't have to look at a misserable SD signal on that 52 inch plasma i regularly log around with me?
secondly, Creative is a joke. they keep coming out with these PMP and cell phone CONCEPTS like it's the 1994! how could the still expectto be taken seriously. the time it takes for Creative to come up with a concept is the time needed by most other manufacturers for actual introduction of 12 models in 4 separate line ups.
@lebowski
i presume it's for a time when you need to impress your future boss with your portfolio, HD is a plus point.... :D
@lebowski
I really like the idea actually... Say if you're out on a trip or something, or even just going to a friend's place - hell even just in another room of your own house.. The option of being able to output HD video to a TV is awesome!
@lebowski
A joke? Have you seen what the Zii chip is capable of? That little chip is pretty much the future of Creative and it looks to be a good future as well. Stem cell processing is awesome. And I think Creative is going in the right direction. The reason they make those prototypes is to show what other companies can do with the Zii chip technology. They're not going to be building the Trinity, other companies will and they will outsource the tech of the Zii chip to those companies that want it in their own line of phones.
At the end of the day, I think it's a genius idea. Rather than spending your own money developing a product to finish, you just give someone else the tools to build the product to their own specifications and then take a slice of the profits. Also, if you look at Zii Week, you will see that it's not only phones that they're putting the Zii chip into so that will increase their outreach with the technology.
1080p is nice, but how do people get 1080p content from? Torrents. So I expect this thing support mkv properly (with selectable audio, ac3 support, subtitle support, unicode font for subtitle support, etc). If the codec/container support is just as limited as any other players out there, the 1080p claim will be just bragging rights with no utilization.
@pika2000
Do you really think Creative is going to facilitate your illegal downloading of movies?
@insky
IF they want business, they will!
@insky If they want the product's feature to be relevant, they have no other choice. There isn't much legal downloadable 1080p source material out there.
@pika2000 And 1080p output isn't something everyone wants to haul around on their PMP, especially when that resolution will command upwards of 6GB-10GB of space for just one flick.
Finnally something to report on? Slow day for news at engadget today.
@Ezye1313
Have we had some sort of slew of new people this week or something? Seriously, this is like the fifth comment i've read about it being a slow day lol.. Its the weekend, news is always slow ;)
I'm really loving this Zii technology, but seriously, its almost becoming like the whole XPERIA thing where we get tease after tease for ages, and then when it comes out, nobody actually gives a crap... Stop teasing and release the damn thing already!!!
What does 'after the break' mean??
@(Unverified) Usually it means clicking through from the front page, but I guess in this case, you actually have to click through to the source...

I dont see no video. :-(
This post doesn't contain the video, Ross I wish you either post that video found in that obscure page provided as the "source", or edit the post accordingly.
Btw, I believe that Creative has made some decent chips, the ZMS-05 & ZMS-08, but apart from these tidbits we haven't actually seen a full-blown third -party device sport a Zii chip ! I believe its been about nearly 6 months since the ZMS-05 was announced, but we haven't yet seen a definitive consumer oriented device. Creative either needs to announce/release one, or get one of their 3rd Party "partners" to do it. Time is running out, the Zii's promise of "Stemcell Computing" may not sound so interesting if it takes much longer !

My want for a PMP has died with the iPhone. No phone no glory!
SO when do these get shipped to America? I really want one.
Pika200 is absolutely right. No MKV support = busted device.
No one wants WMVHD. Useless codec.
Most things I have owned made by Creative have not been that reliable.
Great sound quality and video quality to match? If Creative gets the software right we could see another viable competitor in the PMP market.
