Exemode SQ28m Pocket Digital Camera fits on a keychain, takes charmgingly low-quality footage (video)
The Flip Video may be pocket-sized and ludicrously easy to use, but it's got nothing on Exemode's SQ28m Pocket Digital Camera when it comes to charm. This thing is small enough to fit on a keychain and, though the footage is recorded at a mere 320 x 240 and 8fps without audio, the inclusion of a number of color filters make results look more "retro 8mm" than "cheap digital" (see for yourself below). It starts shipping next week at ¥5,985 ($65), a bit too far above impulse-buy territory for us, but we're certainly more into this than the company's previous efforts.

8fps for $65...no thanks.
no no, guys, this is the Lomo of digital cameras !!
perfect for lo-tech shots or for kids
i buy
@GingerFox
ditto, buy a cellphone with a video option and you have a better quality...
@kio
no no, guys, this is the Nerf gun of rifles !!
perfect for lo-tech shots at kids
i buy
it is small and fit in to my pocket
@NikAmi
You could have made a nice joke of that with some better wording, not it's just ugly :[
Most mobile phones got a better quality camera today anyway. Whats the point of this gadget, really? IMHO, they kinda missed the train, by more than 10 years.
Charmgingly?
Why not just use the cell phone that you're already carrying?
It's like inventing a portable typewriter that fits in your laptop bag.
@joe23521
Lmao
@joe23521
That would be far too easy.
@joe23521
This sample footage evoked nostalgia. Compare that to the footage JoshT shot of his dog with the 3GS.
WANT!!!
@(Unverified) Perv?
@Sea Urchin
Caps lock and three exclamation marks don"t give away sarcasm anymore.
Uh, this isn't supposed to be a a really good camera or a real competitor in the field of cameras. It's a novelty item that lets you record retro style film that I'm sure a lot of people will find interesting.
@Monkeytofu
Exactly. Do you have any idea how many girls on Facebook want a video like that of their friends and them playing in the park at 8fps with sunbursts and a soft indie song over it? Hundreds of thousands.
@Monkeytofu You mean, like everything coming out of Cuppertino?
People who shop at urban outfitters go gaga for this type of stuff.
@Baconbits
Damn right I do!
Quality and colors of the footage reminds me of some footage from the grassy knoll stuff.
"impulse buy" probably starts from $10 to anything less than that
Everything looks like it's from an old home video from the 1950's. That's pretty cool.
Why wouldnt you just get some of those spy camera's off of dealextreme? They record video at VGA quality and also capture audio, are as big as a USB port and cost half the price.
No way Jose... not even audio... economy is really bad, i won't pay 65 bucks for this..
8fps?
nice for $2
go to deal extreme for something with 2x rez + 30fps for $35
was it just me that found the music in the video creepy?
I wonder if you get a whole cd of it included, to put as background music to your footage.
@technognu Does pedobear approve this item and the choice of footage?
@bigcow05
Pedobear approves of the above used video footage, but thats only because he cant hear the creepy music.
Pedobear sadly went deaf one afternoon in the kindergarden, doing innocent non-molestic things...
I'd pay $5 for it, seems about right. For $65 you're already into camera-phone territory with a much better camera (and possibly, a phone just as small).
Anyway, on other related news: http://bit.ly/OpxEK
@Jubeh LOL, I just noticed that funny-looking "HQ" button on the Youtube player :D
I like lomography as much as the next guy but 8 fps is too restrictive. Otherwise it looks nice.
It reminded me of old home movies... i liked it. And seeing little kids play on a fall day takes away a lot of cynicism, to me anyway.
I thought the music perfectly fit the sort of 8mm 70s vibe the video from this camera conjurs up. My only thought is that I could skip the $65 dollars and the extra gadget and just run the video from my camera phone through a cheap filter and encode it at 8 fps for the same look. If this was truly in "impulse" buy territory, then it could make a cheap party favor and a great way to get lots of video from a party or event that all matched - albeit some pretty kitschy party videos.
They use to give better and smaller ones to people for free 9 years ago, but maybe this has better battery life? (there must be SOME positive aspect)
I could see this being useful when doing retail research, or any place where discretion is advised in showing a camera. So, for a few people in limited situations. Anyway, it's pretty cheap.
I would get one to mount on a dog's collar or something, or to an RC helicopter. Wonder how much it'd record on the 2gb of microSD.
Is the bitrate seriously that low?
Very... nostalgic video quality
reminds me of the times at great grandma's watching the slide shows and occasional 32mm film reels of my grandma as a child
interesting
C h a r m i n g l y ?!?! :| I'd say it's more K i n d a S i c k when u don't have the audio on..or on the other hand, when u do.. :/ & make it smaller, cheaper, better (8fps?!) and black)
Maybe it's 8fps because that's what the kids are used to thanks to japanese anime cartoons.
Off to buy this today!
