Wait...ESPN 3D is missing!
@Padilla7921 Yeah. ESPN just announced that they were going to be broadcasting the World Cup in 3D. I guess it won't be on DirecTV.
Maybe I've missed something during all this 3D hype, but aren't glasses required for this? Maybe I'm off my hinges, but is anyone really going to put these on just to watch TV?
@BiggestPossible
Yes, if people arent embarrased to wear them in public, why would you embarrased to wear it at home?
So where do we get those sweet 3D glasses?
Engadget, how about a breakdown of the different 3D HDTV standards?
I'm under the assumption that there are several standards. Is this Bluray vs. HD-DVD all over again?
@xCrunk Luckily we have. http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/26/ready-or-not-the-latest-3d-technology-is-coming-home/
And no, there aren't different standards like Blu-ray and HD DVD. The different approaches to 3D are as compatible as LCD and plasma, they're not the same, but you can watch all the same content on them.
@xCrunk Good point, totally agree, Im still a little bit confused if im gonna have to buy a new HDTV or player to get 3D.. A breakdown of what is needed will be so helpful.
@RichardLawler TXS
@zerokul175 Im with you. I dont understand this whole 3d craze. My tv probably doesnt support it but I dont understand why. I thought 3d was just a blurred image that is "decoded" by those glasses and appears to pop out at you. And im assuming im wrong
@xCrunk
Thanks Rich. Will read now.
more TV crap, when will the madness end???
I don't really think i would wanna wear those everytime a good show comes on. But on occasion for a good movie I might. Coolness none-the-less. =]]
3D is such a pointless gimmick. Hope it fails pronto.
@metric I take it you are one of the remaining few who haven't seen Avatar . . . yet
There is only one standard now, if you remember, Engadget posted about it a couple weeks ago.
I've seen the latest 3DTV tech and it's still freaking awful. We spent all this time getting televisions to look more and more "real" and now we're going to ruin all of that and make it look "3D"?
My recommendation? Buy stock in the company that makes your pain reliever of choice.
Yes, according to the press release you do need new 3D television sets.

All those 3D hype, has anyone raise concern of people who wear glasses using this. You know about 30% American wear glasses.
I hope we can get animal planet in 3d.. I'd love to see a dog show in 3d hd
3D tv is gonna fail miserably. This is going to be the next cablecard.
So not only do we perceive fat slobs sitting on the couch eating potato chips and drinking pop, now they are all going to be sporting a pair of stupid looking 3D shades. This picture is getting uglier by the minute. Honestly.
I refuse to wear specialty glasses just to watch TV. I refuse to buy into the hype that is 3D when I only get a limited amount of my cable channels in last decades big fad HD. I refuse to risk getting a migraine from 3D technology on the TV...that same migraine I got from the 3D movie I just watched last night at the movie theatre. I refuse to spend gobs of money on a TV just to watch 3 or 4 channels of 3D content, most of the programming I probably wouldn't watch if it wasn't in 3D anyway. 3D didn't work in the 50s,60's,70's and 80's, what makes anyone think it's going to take off now. Why can't I just enjoy the DVD's I have now, without having to upgrade each one everytime a new technology comes out....Blueray isn't good enough now, it has to be in 3D blueray to get the best out of the TV.
Call me when they've figured out how to recreate the holograph suite on Star Trek, then I might sit up and take notice.

with an attitude like that, I wonder why you are on this site?
@FNG
There's true advancement in technology and there's gimmickry....you can smell the marketing B.S at work here. 3D using glasses isn't a game changer, nor is it a new experience. It's been done and dusted and repackaged to make it look fresh, yet they're throwing it out there as if its the second coming. When they can't even let my current HDTV work at its full potential due to most cable channels still being in crappy SD content, I have the right to bitch about another format they're throwing at us when the last one still hasn't been properly implemented, and frankly nor will this one realize its true potential before they've moved on to something else.
I'm a part of tech appreciation as much as anyone else on this website, but I'm not easily woed by repackaged smoke and mirrors with a new gen twist and the same old mandatory 3D glasses.
London Olympics in 3d... bring it on!
It might be presented by Panasonic, but Advil is the real sponsor!
I don't get it. Why are so many companies doing this 3D stuff? Where is the demand for it? I'm not seeing many people saying they want this. I do see many people saying they don't want it. Why are so many companies even bothering if the demand isn't there?
I wish Directv would stop with this nonsense and just officially release mutli-room viewing for the DVR already.
