Samsung NX10 hybrid HD-capable camera hands-on

A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Uh, GF-1 and E-PEN 1/2, while having slightly smaller sensors, are far more pocketable than this. So not so underserved crowd, I suppose.
@Sarig
Yeah, m 4/3rds for me!
You guys at Engadget must have darn big pockets.
@manekineko2 no kidding! are you guys wearing overalls or something? let's see photo evidence of this thing in an actual pocket.
Pocketable in the same sense as a pocketable film camera (ie. coat/jacket pockets and purses). Though I suppose it's kinda stretching even that definition. GF-1/E-P1 size is more ideal.
Just curious if there's been any word on lens cost. I would imagine in this day and age any camera that introduces a completely proprietary lens collection is bound to face obstacles on that point alone, much less if they are prohibitively expensive.
I THINK they meant their POOPSACK.
Equipping that hood-adorned kit lens kinda kills the pocket-ability argument. If the sensor is APS-C it's still going to have roughly DSLR sized lenses, so unless you go pancake all the way it's hard to argue it's fully pocketable. The m4/3s ILCs are the upper limit of what can honestly be considered pocketable, and even then they're only coat pocketable.
I don't think this camera is small enough to sway owners of DSLRs. The size difference between the NX and the smaller DSLRs (ie: Nikon D60, Olympus 420, etc) just isn't that great, especially when you start slapping large zooms on the camera. Even with the one pancake lens that Samsung is displaying, I wouldn't describe this as pocketable. Maybe large coat pocketable, but even that seems debatable. Way to regurgitate marketing material, though!
why oh why would you put an AMOLED on a camera? use it outdoors on a sunny day and you won't be able to see what you're shooting.
Size similar to GH1, GH1 is gonna be serious rival if they sell body only or with the 20mm kit lens. Sure is bigger sensor you getting, but consider you must buy samsung lens for auto focus, samsung never make any great point and shoot camera it would be hard for them to capture the market for people who know camera, is more idea for samsung fanboy or first timer. Samsung probably gonna heavy advertise with this camera.
@techlord As always samsung is good regarding the datasheet, and sadly some people are very sensible to this over the overall quality of products. I even bough some of their cellphones... never again lol
@techlord
Actually, I DID read an article on PhotographyBlog that said that Panny are going to start selling a body-only G1 sometime this year.
To get it small, they use liveview with a contrast based AF which is slow and inaccurate compared to AF SLR users expect/need.
Then there is the obvious trade off in lens quality.
Small cameras will always mean sacrifice and most photographers are willing to own 2 cameras and pack accordingly depending on the nature of the shoot. This is preferable to a hybrid like this which is too big for convenience and too small for serious photography.
@roxstar7
Uh, which trade-off in lens quality?
@roxstar7
You can call contrast AF slow, and it is inaccurate for moving subjects, but it does work just fine for landscapes and pre-focused shots.
I use it on the Canon 5DM2 when using the 2x & 1.4x tele-extenders.
As for this camera, if they took out the optical viewfinder, it would have been smaller. The issue is that the smaller the lens, the smaller the sensor can be. Since bigger sensors are better, it is tough to find a good lens that is small to use with it.
@rcappo
They did take out the optical sensor, and put in an electronic one instead. Or it would've just been a DSLR :)
In theory it should allow for *better* wideangle lenses. Since they don't need to retrofocus just to compensate for a huge gap that a mirror box introduces.
yes, but how much will one of these puppies cost?
One.... Million... Dollars!
Eh, but seriously my guess is that it'll be more or less competitive with the existing micro-four-thirds ILC cameras.
Nope baby, don't want one, I love too much my 7D to cheat on it with that junk :-P
The sensor on Micro 4/3 is too small.
This camera could be a decent step forward.
But it is a big maybe what the image quality of the body and the pancake lens is like.
Interested to see reviews on this.
I wish Canon would release some pancake lenses.
First of all, you can't pocket that thing cause of the lense. Second, theres no lense, picture quality, or any other announcement, no one in there right mind would want one at this point.
No, I don't want this. Too bulky to be pocketable, too many tradeoffs to replace my dslr. Failboat.
