Acer issues US recall for 22,000 laptops going disco inferno
We've already seen Acer issue a recall in Europe way back in October, so honestly we're a bit disturbed it's taken the US Consumer Product Safety Commission this long to follow suit. Various 13.3-inch Aspire One models -- specifically AS3410, AS3410T, AS3810T, AS3810TG, AS3810TZ, and AS3810TZG -- could cause potential burns due to a faulty internal microphone wire under the palm rest. Got one of those versions? Give Acer a ring and see if you have an affected model that'll get fixed gratis.

I've heard from PC nerds that Acers hardware sucks... I guess they are right
@kopmis
The microphone cable is faulty I would hardly call that hardware.. After all they are still net books and they are meant to be cheap.
@MoonWalkerCTE
..what WOULD you call it?
@MoonWalkerCTE: That IS faulty hardware. You can call it whatever you want, of course. Second of all, a number of those machines are NOT netbooks, they're CULV laptops. Third, being cheap does not justify being explosive, or hot enough to set someone on fire, or radioactive, or being made of horse feces, or...!!
@moleculeeye forget Laptops even their desktops are shitty hardware wise.
Another reason why my first Acer notebook years ago was also my last.
Asus on the other hand gained a loyal customer thanks to the Qosmio. :D
@MikeZ
i think you are confused.... Qosmio is toshiba.
but ya, ASUS is the best!!!
Before anyone wonders: The decision for the Toshiba was by a hair's breadth but minor quirks of the X500 and their decision to give the X505 less features are the reason it'll be Asus from now on.
love the title :p
@creepin
truedat
this is the poor line of Gateway
Hmmm. That is likely a very easy fix.
Not sure why you say the recall was for Europe. This sounds like the exact same issue as mentioned in your previous post. I haven't had trouble with my 3810T, but I contacted Acer after your first post about this thing, and they never got back to me. I haven't cared enough to follow up on it, but maybe I should. Doubt I will.
I am glad that I bought a Dell 1745. It hasn't caught fire .... yet.
NONE of the models affected are Aspire One models. They're Aspire models ... but NOT NETBOOKS.
I have had mine since July and got the win 7 upgrade for it. Been a great laptop, and is a quality level above the Aspire one I also have. I thought that the weakness occurs if pressure is applied to the left palmrest which can cause the microphone cable to short.
I also sent a request in when the first notification of this issue arose some time last year. Never heard back and now no longer at the previous email address of my old job. Just tried to hit the link on their support page and the site is down. Correction it is working now but the link takes you to the Euro Acer site, maybe that is why they have not responded to us as of yet.
Atleast they don't ignore the problem like HP does. They gave a BIOS update for a hardware issue...
I own an acer laptop. In fact, I'm on it right now. To put it bluntly, it is the worse computer I've ever owned; and this coming from one who once had a computer that crashed every day. My laptop doesn't crash...often, but it's still horrible. I've had to send it in before to get fixed, because it kept crashing every time I logged in. For some reason unknown to me, the hardware fro the touch pad stopped working. I am now stuck carrying a USB mouse everywhere I go. Let this be a warning to all: ACER SUCKS!
@MasterPuppet Have you tried reinstalling the drivers?
@Harrison I have tried, but it wouldn't go. It'd say it was installed, but nothing changed.
These are Acer Timeline models, not Aspire. I own one of these. It is a great laptop, never have problem with it in 2 months.
I called Acer technical support, and they will ship out a replacement wire for me. I will wait to see how it is fixed
I don't understand how ppl can buy their crap. I've learnt my lesson NEVER EVER TO BUY THEIR POS computers after experiencing it myself. CAN YOU BLOODY HELL IMAGINE A DESKTOP THAT DIES IN LESS THAN two months? the best part? their technician was "certain" it was all cause of a loose RAM. Now another 1.5-2months later SAME EXACT THING I guess when u pay peanuts you reaally do get monkeys. /rage
