Buffalo brings 4TB TeraStation III WSS NAS to America, streamers in tow
Remember that 4TB TeraStation NAS that we saw surface in Japan last September? Liar. We know you're faking it just to save face, but we'll let you slide -- next time, just be straight with us, cool? The TeraStation III WSS has just been cleared for takeoff here in America, boasting four quick-swap SATA hard drives, Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 Express Edition and native Active Directory support. Check it right now in 2TB and 4TB editions for $1,599.99 and $1,999.99, respectively.

Nice.
@monzaa Pricy...
@CrossCheck
The sarcasm wasn't obvious, I guess.
@monzaa How can you get sarcasm from a single, complimentary word ?
@SarnGate
The sarcasm/irony comes in by using nice to mean the direct opposite. I guess it wasn’t that obvious. I did mention that it wasn’t obvious in my last post.
@monzaa
I think SarnGate's knows what sarcasm means - I agree with him that there's no way anybody could interpret the word 'Nice.' to be sarcastic in this context. It's not obvious by any means of the word.
Thanks for clearing it up for us though. =]
Seems somebody accidentally added $1200 to the price.
(obligatory statement about storing lots of pr0n)
I've had good luck with Buffalo products, including but not limited to there line of NAS, but i seriously think this is overpriced. Why not get a Drobo or build a FreeNAS?
Hurk, that's a bit expensive...
How they can justify a 4TB NAS for $2000 is amazing to me. I recently put together the parts required for a custom-built NAS - everything priced off newegg.
1. Chenbro ES34069-BK-180 - 4 Hot-Swappable SATA Black Case with 180W PS: $199.00
2. JetWay JNC69P-330-LF - Dual Core Atom 330 w/ Nvidia ION Mini ITX Motherboard: $165.00
3. G.SKILL 2GB DDR2 800: $50.00
4. WD Carviar Green WD20EADS SATA 3.0Gbps 2TB Internal Hard Drive: $179.00 (x2 ea.)
There's a 4TB homemade NAS for $700 and change (before any OS / software).
@Jyncus Agreed!!. Just bought the LG 4-bay NAS for 300 on Newegg. 4-bays AND a blu-ray burner BUILT IN!!!.
Nice equipment, Buffalo, but... pricey!!!
@Jyncus
Thx for detailing your custom NAS! I was looking into doing something like this and your items are exactly what I need. Time to setup my own WHS! ;)
@Jyncus
For the price of the chase, mb and ram, you can actually buy a entry level HP ProLiant ML110 G6 with xeon CPU. The only thing missing is 4 hotswap bay, but cpu will be multiple times faster. But I think it's not very important for home users.
Buy.com is selling a four bay Intel NAS for $135. Throw in four 1TB drives at about $90/each and you're still under $500. This thing is just ridiculously priced.
@Jyncus Why did you use "Green" drives in a NAS? Doesn't those spin down while idle and cause potential RAID freakout? I seem to always be reading that Green drives don't make good NAS drives.
@nsfw
I know.. I've read the same. Personally, I just don't have the need to implement a RAID with my NAS. I use a spare drive to manually backup my most important stuff, and that's it as far as redundancy. *shrug*
Oh, and I don't like the price WD puts on their "Raid Edition" drives either. =]
This is spendy but it is running Windows Storage Server, which is actually a pretty cool implementation of Server. It is very powerful in what it can do with quotas and data de-duplication. That is where the etra charge comes in. If this thing was running Windows Home server it would probably cost $1000 less.
A TranquilPC BBS2 full filled with 5x2To + freenas is still less expensive than their 2To edition.
Buffalo guys are just drunk.
@djalal
WHS does not support raid though.
I've been saying Drobo was the Bose of attached storage (fancy marketing, supposed to be advance, mediocre performance, expensive). Have we found an equivalent for Monster Cable?
Terms like "quick swap" scare me.
