Lenovo T410 gets unboxed, handled, reviewed
Ready for some hot ThinkPad action? Lenovo's shipping out its new ThinkPad T410, and like clockwork an unboxing video has arrived. (This is the Core i5 T410, not the brand-new Core i3 T410i -- confused? Yeah.) Changes to the venerable T400 formula are minor, apart from the new Core 2010 processors inside -- the trackpad is the same nice dimpled multitouch unit we fell in love with on the T400s, a powered USB port for charging other devices, a DisplayPort instead of DVI, and... a modem port? You just keep on being crazy, Lenny. Don't you ever change. Check it on video after the break.
Update: Laptop has a review up -- as you'd expect, it fared quite well.

Well, you never know when you might need to dial in!
@chewbacha Modems are still useful for users who live in rural areas and don’t have many/any reliable broadband options. Roughly 10% of the users I support fall into this camp. I suppose the point could be fairly made, though, that people who still need modems could use USB-connected ones.
@chewbacha The Lenovo ThinkPad T410, as well as the 15.6-inch T510, features the dual-core Intel Core i5-520M 2.4GHz, i5-540M 2,53GHz, or the i7-620M 2.66GHz processor, depending on a customer’s choice.

why do "business" laptops have to look like they are from 1990?
@nerd
Because they could.
@nerd
I guess so they can be design neutral. Having an edgy or nice looking laptop makes you look kinda silly pulling it out in a meeting.
@nerd
Because ergonomics are more important than showing off.
@nerd
Actually, that makes them look neutral, as you can't tell how old they are. Your fashionable computer, instead, gets obsolete very fast - and sneered at by people like you even faster.
@gp It would be awkward situation where the new associate gets a shiny new computer where the boss has a laptop that looks old. Standardization of computers helps a bit with office politics.
@darkNiGHTS That's the worst excuse for an ugly laptop yet.
ill take one, fooor freeeeeee
I have a Lenovo R500 with the display port, and I purchased a display port to HDMI connector to hook it up to my TV. Alas, the displayport did not support Audio! I would suggest finding out if the new laptops support audio over DP or not before dropping the cash to buy it.
@Stephers
I was under the impression that no DisplayPorts allowed for audio transmission. Am I wrong about this?
Regardless, I'm dying for Lenovo to get on the stick and throw an HDMI port on these puppies.
As long as it still comes with a great keyboard, is black, has a trackpoint, and can continue to work after being run over by a truck, I'm happy to call it a Thinkpad.
Nice video!
I just ordered a T410, and this is great laptopornography to keep me occupied in the mean while.
Come on, Lenovo, I'm waiting for you to drop the x201 tablet. Help a fella out.
Owning a x200t, I want to see what they come out with, but dread it being anough of an upgrade to justify buying one. Tablets aren't cheap!
If only they offered a more potent graphics card for this laptop, I'd be interested. The Quadro 880m from the ThinkPad W510 would be nice (the workstation-equivalent of the GT330m.)
@Leindurstit
I thought the W series were just T series with better graphics?
@Leindurstit
Ah, nevermind; they don't offer a 14-inch W series.
@bigcow05 Exactly. It just hurts when you see new laptops like that little Alienware with its powerful graphics card (and switchable graphics, no less,) and then you look to something that's 3" bigger only to find the same kind of low-end cards you see in machines that cost hundreds less. And it's not like they NEED to put workstation-class graphics cards into the T-series of Thinkpads, what with the whole T-series from last year having featured consumer-level Radeon HD 3xxx parts...
@Leindurstit
Seems like it is available with nvidia's nvm 3100m:

Which is better than the Radeon 3xxx series in 3dmark.
Hot.
I just got our loaner for demo. I assure you there's nothing sexy about a loaner unboxing.
It would be nice if reviewers, even those who do a good job as this gentleman did, would have someone available to hold the camera. Giggling the camera around while getting the produce out of the box is distracting and wastes time.
Just some constructive criticism.
ThinkPads are alright but they sound like feminine hygiene products. The name is just embarrassing and I'm guessing these laptops won't sell because of it.
@(Unverified)
Yeah you're totally right. Because its only the enterprise standard here in the silicon valley. But what's the significance of the silicon valley? Its not like we make all your computers. That's preposterous. That's like saying New York City is the center of business and trading.
Lenovo's boxy, business look worked when they made world class machines backed by terrific service. Now, they not only use shoddy components, but treat their customers with contempt.

Oh please. The whole IBM vs Lenovo Thinkpad thing is ridiculous. I've used the T61p and currently, the T400 and can say that they are both as solid as can be. Get over man. Its the past. Lenovo has put many things into Thinkpad to make it as solid as ever.
@questionexclamation Not to mention they're still designed in Yamato.
@questionexclamation Glad to hear you've had a good experience with a couple of Lenovo models. I hope your Lenovos continue to be reliable, saving you from ever having to call their customer service folks.
Under IBM, I don't recall a situation where a component flaw caused major failure rates across six models. I'm completely certain that IBM's response would not have been to stonewall, then issue a token recall to a subset of those affected, all while degrading phone support to the level one would expect from Dell.
A cursory perusal of Lenovo's support forums will show how widespread disillusionment in this company has become.
wow, that's a really ugly laptop. I understand it's more for work than for play but geez.
This is nothing. I have an old 600E laying around.
I like the looks of these machines.
Better then the trailer trash machines for sale at Best Buy.
I want to knwo in teh reveiw if it has switchable graphics
@nugur
I don't think so. I saw his other videos and he mentioned that he is only using integrated graphics. I was hoping to see it outfitted with that too, along with the 9 cell battery including the 9 cell slab that supposedly gives it over 22 hours of batt. life.
@nugur Well, it's an Arrandale so the GPU is somewhere on that CPU, which means if you added a discrete video card the integrated graphics is still there regardless.
I've seen a lot of negative comments about device and especially laptop design and aesthetics, but on the other hand I'm sure every design has its haters (and lovers). Plus, people's ideas about a device change over time - a radical idea may grow old.
So, what do you think is good laptop design?
it is a she?
that's an ugly woman.
