Where art thou
Dell Adamo XPS? That's the question this poor error page seems to be asking when customers attempt to order the insanely thin laptop on Dell's site. Though it only went on sale
back in late November, Dell.com no longer has the crazily designed, $1,799 laptop up for purchase. We're currently trying to get official word from Dell, but all is not lost for those that feel they've made the biggest mistake in the world by not ordering the ULV laptop that only lasts less than two hours on a charge -- it's still available from Best Buy and Amazon.com. Stay tuned for more news as we do a bit of digging on this one.
Update: Dell confirmed that the Adamo XPS will not be making a reapperence on its site. "While the Adamo XPS was certainly and engineering marvel, it also was a limited edition product with a finite number of systems available," said a Dell spokesperson. Adamo XPS 2 anyone?
"all is not lost for those that feel they've made the biggest mistake in the world by not ordering the ULV laptop that only lasts less than two hours on a charge"
Ouch.
@Alex
At least it has sleep mode swappable batteries, so battery life isn't that big issue.
Could be that they are releasing a new version.
@Alex Its going to be replaced with the Dell Mini 5, their new thin and light
@Alex As for the adamo, So the keyboard is actually where the screen appears to be. Given that they have been jerking you around with this thing, I wouldn’t put it past them and it would seem to make sense for that to be the correct arrangement. The insane specs is obviously not mediocre, so as the price too (well at least there's a drop )... More: http://bit.ly/dell-adamo-laptop-concepts
It would make sense for a product update. Here hoping they drop the price to a hope instead of the current dream.
so long for innovation...
@Ziltoid the omniscient The innovation had nothing to do with it, it was more like the price. You could get like 3 Dell Studio 15's for that price with i3.
@Engadget This may be off topic, but there should be a way to link our gdgt accounts to Engadget. It's really annoying when people call you a fanboy of things you dont even own, or a hater of somethin that you do own.
That or perhaps work on the Engadget profile page just a wee bit more? It'd be great, and highly appreciated. I'm sure many readers would agree. :)
Hell didn't freeze over...sooooo no nobody bought it?
And nothing of value was lost. I didn't think it was possible, but this laptop was even more useless than the Macbook Air.
@Prevacator
At least the MBA was cool, this is just weird
They're both totally useless
@yulebellow
This is cooler than air, but still useless.
Poor lil fella, it was just a boy....
Nice design, wish I actually had a chance to play with it
@albinomexi : That's what she said?
@One Love
About Duke Nukem Forever?
@albinomexi The Microsoft Store (across from the Apple Store) in Mission Viejo has one. I wanted to leave the lid closed but figured that would be cruel because someone would likely break the thing trying to get it open.
i never really got why anyone would be interested in one of these laptops (either this one or the first iteration) when culv laptops from other manufacturers (ie acer timeline or asus ul series) are less than half the price.
looks like dell came to that same realization.
Official word from Dell: U guys dun deserve it
apple should do this with...well everything they sell.
@troy polamalu
First.... to downrank you...
@New Reformation
Nah, I upranked him.
@New Reformation I just down ranked you!
@Prevacator Me too!
@troy polamalu Well, fuck me, aren't y'all commenters above just some sad little fuckers.
No loss. Really. The regular Adamo machines are nice, but this thing was pointless as anything more than a concept piece.
@Leindurstit Agreed wholeheartedly. I'm a believer of innovation, but there's no need to reinvent the wheel in this case.
I hope Dell's lesson out of this isn't "we should stop making innovative, ultra-thin laptops." Instead, I hope it's "Macbook Air has a better CPU, a better GPU, and much better battery life, plus Adamo XPS had this freaky hinge thing going on, so let's make something better this time."
Granted, the Adamo XPS is even thinner than the Air. But IMO, the compromises were too great.
The design was boneheaded but undeniably interesting and unique. The shelf life seems awfully short though even for a Dell. Well alas.
They must have sold the 10 they made, not surprised it took this long.
What a useless design.
good. this design was horrible. Also though, the LED backlit monitors Dell had have also dropped off in the last week:
G2410 and G2210 (they now have similar ones ending with a "H", but they aren't led backlit).
Lol, wow they took so long to realise this weird machine couldn't even sell? Give me the original Adamo anytime.
@wT
I agree, the original was much nicer.
With the Vostro 13" out as well (which does thin, light and stylish AND affordable), this is no surprise.
good riddance. there's a reason that all laptops have essentially the same form factor. they are functional. the adamo was not.
Who needs it? Who wants it?
I always thought it looked weird anyway. Interesting concept, but that hinge and the keyboard raising bit was just too strange.
the other adamos are sweet looking. I'm leaning towards the HP envy, though, assuming I lose my mind in the near future and order another laptop I don't need.
I think this puts to rest the issue of price vs functionality. The world wasn't born with millionares to spare, let alone people with 6 figures in their salary. Introducing a product as such during an economic downturn is foolish in its own right. What was Dell thinking? If you are going to copy Apple, make sure you dot every i and cross every damned T!
That was quick....
if i can remember correctly.. they are going to become a best buy exclusive.. i'm pretty sure i heard that on the pc mag podcast
@rads06 I wouldn't have thought that the Adamo was aimed at the typical Best Buy customer? Still it's the kind of marketing genius that's making Dell such a success.
Screwed by Greystone Industries. The Tauron mafia is gonna be pissed.
Hey Engadget, Dell also dropped the Studio XPS 13, it was a nice machine so it's a shame to see it go.
This laptop seemed to me to be more of a technology demonstrator project. Hopefully dell is taking things that they learned in the construction of this laptop to apply to its main line of laptops, as they did with the original adamo and the vostro v13
ADAMO
RIP
"Here lies the ugliest
CULV ever created"

ewww... :(
Well it was only a matter of time...
terrible, terrible product. sony destroy anything dell can muster, just look at the new z (drool)
@leykis101
Or Dell Adamo Pearl, for 999$. From dell.com
That's why Michael Dell hates netbooks. He said they're ruined the whole value of building good computers. All the cheapsters want are netbooks and $350 seems to have become the new norm of pricing for portable computing. Anything more expensive is just considered a rip-off no matter how much extra detail goes into a device.
good riddance. hopefully this'll mean a return where dropping $1800 can get you a proper laptop, that you can, i dunno, do laptopy stuff with.
Maybe Dell is working on Adamo's successor: Dell Eveo
Actually, I made this discovery last week. I wanted to purchase this laptop last wednesday, and when I tried, the only adamo available was the regular. So I called dell (us and canada), and they told me that the limited number were all made and sold, so this is why they are no more available... Anyhow, I'll try buying one on ebay instead!
