Speaking of
iPhone OS 4, check this out: PixelCUBE Studios, which currently holds the #1 spot on iTunes' list of free iPhone app downloads with The Impossible Test, noticed something rather curious in its usage stats. See, PixelCUBE uses Pinch Media to dredge up analytics, and a quick check of the OS versions its users are running (pictured left) shows that not one, not two, but three distinct flavors of OS 4 have turned up: 4.0, 4.0.1, and 4.1. It's not unusual for Apple (or any major software developer, really) to have different teams working on multiple version milestones at the same time, so we don't doubt that this could be real; then again, this is easy enough to spoof in a world where enterprising devs and fun-loving miscreants are bending iPhones to their every whim with creative hacks and lightning-quick jailbreaks. Anyone up for a careful daily sweep of BART trains until we get to the bottom of this?
exclude/apple didnt catch this.
so do i have to use a comma or a semicolon to add tags to exclude?
maybe a bar |
@elduderino
They forgot to include "Apple" tag. That's why. But this piece of news may actually be relevant as opposed to the ones where they were covering guys forming line years before the launch of iPad while saying they didn't have time to review JooJoo. Not that I blame them. ;) After all they need money to buy food too! Apple news sells.
@elduderino My theory is:
4.0 = iPod Touch, iPhone and iPhone 3g
4.1 = iPod Touch 2G, iPhone 3GS and new iPhone
4.0.1 = iPad.
At some point the hardware differences were going to cramp up the newer OS versions.
OK. Is there a Frozen Yogurt aka Froyo Flavor? Ohhh.. I'll prolly end up in oblivion.
@Ridgecity
Yea, something like that or the numbers changed.
@Bernd I agree that they will start phasing out old device like the G4 and G5 Macs. The orignal iPhone can barely run 3.0 without glitching
@ckrames1234 **Like they did with the
@Ridgecity .. I take it you don't know anything about software development. Because you're theory is just not how it works. Okay let me educate you:
When 4.0 is finished they cut it from the TRUNK (i.e. the main code base) then add two BRANCHES (i.e. separate code bases) based off 4.0.
4.0.1 for just fixing bug.
4.1 for adding new features.
The reason being that work that is being done on 4.1 often requires more code changes and as such is going to require a complete test i..e the testing team will need to test EVERYTHING. Where 4.0.1 is going to require less testing because it is just bug fixes.
Anyway this is how it works at Apple, Microsoft, Oracle .. hell EVERY company.
Sweet.
1. The old iPhone (all versions until now)
2. iPhone HD
3. iPad
Anyother versions? Fragmentation?
@viditbhargava
I'm with you on that. It's got to be for different devices. Good call on the older iPhone versions.
@viditbhargava
I was typing just the same.
And of course, apple will just force you to buy newer products.
@Fredfrombelgium
$10 upgrade like they did for iPod touches to get to 3.0. I bet the will do that again, and for the iPad.
@viditbhargava If this means we can get 4.0 on older iPhone OS devices, than I'm happy. I want multitasking on my first gen iPod Touch lol.
@Complex Pants
Bet ya the touches are the only ones that get charged due to how much more an iPad costs compared to a touch.
These usage statistics are sent by Apple right? Why would they let it go by? It doesn't say much but I didn't expect them to have 4.0.1 ALREADY in development. I mean the bugs can be fixed before releasing 4.0..
@AndreyATGB
Not really, there could be lower priority bugs or minor feature enhancements (marginal speed/performance improvements etc.) that are put off to 4.01 or 4.1.
Well el jobso did say at the town hall meeting that th nxt iPhone (OS) was in for some aggressive updates the competition wouldn't be able to keep up with.
Oh cmon, you know it's
OS 4.0 Home
OS 4.0 Home Premium
OS4.0 Professional
LOL
@Groggle
Rofl. That made my day XD
@Groggle
Nice.
@Groggle Maybe if it were made by windows..
@Groggle u missed the Ultimate version, buddy
but you get my +1 nonetheless
lol
Yep you just made my day too. Good joke. We apple goona look like MS Wind. That was a funny one.
@MoonWalkerCTE You mean "made by Microsoft" right?
@Groggle Or maybe they will change the name from iPhone OS to Mac OS Mobile 4 Series.
My guess is Iphone, ipod touch, and ipad
each with its own slightly modified OS version
@Hydra Yeah, sounds like it.
@Hydra
I'm going with:
4.0 - iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS
4.0.1 - iPhone HD
4.1 - iPad
@Hydra
Generally speaking Apple has not done this for iPhone and iPod touch versions. Sometimes there will be a 0.0.1 update that is only needed for one or the other (IIRC, a security patch recently) but they don't go out of their way to keep separate OS version numbers for those two lines of devices. It wouldn't make much sense for them to do so, since the device itself is identified in other ways.
@Emblazin
I doubt they will upgrade the first gen iPhone. I don't think the hardware would be up to par with the possiblity of multitasking.
We have found iPhone OS 4 usage statistics in our app: FacebookBirthdays. More here http://www.iteamapps.com/2010/03/usage-statistics-of-iphone-os-4-found-in-facebookbirthdays/
@iTeamApps
what a crappy app
@ssgadget
http://www.engadget.com/exclude/Apple
how about the fact that you can change the version # of the OS in some config file (if jailbroken). 3.1.2 people use it to trick the app store into letting them have 3.1.1 only apps. People could use it for this.
And why use this to prove it's legit when apple just announced its reveal as 3 days from now? So no need to prove that developers exist and test stuff. but yay anyway!
@killplay i mean 3.1.3 only apps
VoIP iPhone 3g? lol
well obviously we are getting 4.0 in a couple weeks adding a few features from the ipad like the springboard backgrounds and ect. Then 4.0.1 for any stability fix's to 4.0 on the ipad and etc. Finally we will get 4.1 in june with the iPhone HD, which adds even more features onto the original 4.0....
@Reluttr
sounds good!
As long as 4.0 doesn't cost $15 just to go down to $5 in a week (3.0 cough cough)
You rather sweep Caltrain, not BART as most city commuters who work at Apple use Caltrain and shuttle to Cupertino campus from train station.
For the iPad, I don't think 4.0 would bring any more drastic changes than there are on 3.2, but this might add a lot to the current phones and update them to the current iPad OS level++. Who knows what Apple would do with the multitasking...
I'm guessing .. Skinned Springboard (ala winterboard), better app management in the springboard (unlimited pages/categories?), sharware model to apps, full bluetooth stack and iBooks for iPhone.
YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST: THE iPHONE 4.0 HAS MULTiTASKING.
Looks like they were hard at work all along even with the launch of the IPad. Bring on the IPhone love.
iPhone OS4 will vanquish that ...that that VILE android.
@facethefire It would be preferable for both to exist. For the sake of everyone.
