Meizu Mbook tablet gets pictured, initial specs detailed
Well lookie here, folks, everyone's favorite clone phone maker is getting in on the tablet game, announcing the 8.4-inch Mbook. It's said to have a 1024 x 768 capacitive touchscreen, 3G and WiFi, a 12 hour battery, and even HDMI output over which it will pump enough data to tickle every pixel on your 1080p display. Promising (if a bit optimistic) specs for sure, and while we don't know what OS the thing will be running, those icons are looking mighty familiar. In other words, don't be surprised if this thing winds up being just a big M8.
Update: Commenter Mr. Crosini pointed out that the photo above is actually a fan-made conceptual render added here by ardent Meizu fanboy bingo_zheng. However, the specs are said to have come straight from the mouth of Meizu's CEO, and if you can't trust Jack Wong who can you trust?

another nice copy
...of the hp slate...
@virvervit
Idk what you guys are talking about, this actually looks pretty nice looking and promising....assuming it delivers as promised, but that's a whole other subject.
...of Project Origami...
...of iPad...
Copy or not, the specs are promising...
...of Notion's Ink Adam...
...of Joojoo...
...Poor Joojoo...
@virvervit I have to say, this is the only one Chinese company I admire
@Billy
Its the only Chinese company you know about... and they're doing really underhanded things, if you care about IP, so... what exactly do you like about them?
@virvervit
2 Wong's don't make it right
@virvervit
yeah, lame copy of http://www.engadget.com/2006/02/24/microsofts-origami-project/
@virvervit Looks like Meizu is the kid at school who tries to emulate everything the cool kid does. First, they made their M8 which was, essentially, one of the better KIRF iPhones. Now, they are copying apple again. Apple makes the iPad which is a large iPhone/iPod Touch so Meizu makes the MBook which, according to Engadget, is a large M8.
mPad?
@ChazClout It is MBook, go consult your optometrist
@mps
No.
The last time I did that, I left the optometrist realising how much of an ugly cun* my wife was.
@ChazClout
"mPad" - I thought the same thing.
No thanks.
@juliojorgeortiz
Talking about the m8's icons looking familiar, I wonder what the iphone's icons look familiar to
@juliojorgeortiz Actually I think this will sell pretty well in China, where the PMP market is already huge, and Meizu is a fairly reputable brand which solid product quality. Of course they'd have to bring it to the market first, but I think the making of M8 has taught them a lot, that's how companies evolve. As for the OS, I hope it's not another heavily skinned CE or WM.
If it has a proper OS (Android?), then that HDMI full HD output is a game changer. With a physical keyboard, it would be an idea dockable computer, something the iPad cannot be due it's low res output.
@Oflife 'ideal dockable computer', that should have said. Although something N900 sized with full HD out would be nice for travels.
@Oflife I've still got my heart set on the Gemini tablet, so long as it doesn't disappear in a poof of vapor.
Looks good. If it has USB ports, SD Ram slots, it's already ahead of the game. The issue remains how well it performs.
@TechBlogger - the issue is rather that it will take em five years to bring it to the market...
there we go, three more years wait for meizu pad ;-)
Well we can expect for this to ship reeeaaallll soooon.... 2... maybe 3........... years.....
I'll believe it when I see it in action.
Steve Jobs has more money in his wallet currently than this company has in total.
You all do not understand these things need to be marketed.
Phones and tablets are different. Phones are carried by cellular companies. They get marketing from the carrier themselves.
These tablets are going to be carried in regular stores and thus the company needs to market them. You have to give a reason to buy it. A phone is a bit easier of a sell.
@SCXFAN
Very true. Marketing, and developers who think they can make a buck out of your platform. For now, this excludes all the me-too tablets, since none of them has both.
Wait and see before I put it on a Want list. I was horrifically disappointed with JooJoo, it looked like the tablet to get.
... I think I'll wait for MS Courier
@darkmax you may be waiting a long time....
I want one too but we need to know it's not vaporware
"GrandPa, dad says you were alive during the tablet wars of 2010. Is that true?"
"Sally, fetch your GrandPa another Bourbon, and I'll tell you what I can remember"
@joelaf Right now it's all all talk and no show. I'm anxious for a decent tablet that has decent battery life and allows me to do whatever I what with it.
The tablet form - massive screen, narrow frame, all black - is a license to imitate the success of the iPhone's aesthetics that would have been frowned on if these devices were just phones.
But don't get me wrong: I'm all for it.
okay i followed the Meizu m8 out the gate and this is what will prob end up happening to the lovely mbook, theyll scrap the wifi due to china laws, itl b mega delayed, itl be rumured to run android, they'll forget to purchase a patent, then itl arrive about the time iphone os 6 is released
big M8 lol, i think thats perfectly fine, i mean ipad is big ipod
Might want to do your research 1st engadget..........This is just a fan made render.
@Turnipus We did, but neither the source nor the via mention this is a fan-made image. Did some more digging on the BBS and found the fan in question. Will update the post.
As I was reading, I saw MBook but said MacBook out loud...
If you can trust Jack Wong,who can't you trust?
Why are the display dimensions of this device (like iPad's) 4:3? A 16:9 display (as on Slate or Android tablets) would have been better...
Umm isnt 1024x768 a little bit too small?
another cheap ipad knockoff....great.
Meizu is the comedy relief of the gadget world.
WEIGHT! WEIGHT IS IMPORTANT! HOW MUCH IS THE WEIGHT! You always forget to mention ebook readers weight! X-(
"don't be surprised if this thing winds up being just a big M8."
That's what she said about the iPad.
Price?
