PS3's summer 3D firmware is all fun and games... and no Blu-ray movie support?
If you want you and your loved ones looking like the family pictured alongside this text, sitting in front of the TV gazing at 3D dolphins emanating from a PlayStation 3 through your television console, your best bet is to envision Ecco, not Flipper.* According to TechRadar, Sony has clarified that the summer firmware update to enable 3D applies to games only, and that 3D Blu-ray movie support will come with a second update due out later this year. We haven't been able to confirm the announcement ourselves, but suddenly, that freebie copy of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 3D isn't looking so tantalizing.* Hypothetically speaking, of course. We have no confirmation on a 3D version of Sega's Ecco the Dolphin or Season 3 of Flipper, featuring "The Most Expensive Sardine in the World."

Ecco was the bomb
@bougelahi
yep
@bougelahi What?
@Alexster404
Rofl... kids these days... :P
Its so advanced that you can see the image extending out of the side of the frame, even from behind the TV!
I remember spending months on just jumping up and down. Those where the days
@bougelahi
Genesis Does!
There's no point dishing out all this 3D stuff when the majority of people can't afford 3DTV's yet.
@Cydoniac Everyone can afford 3DTV's, they just choose to spend their money of frivolous things like food.
@Cydoniac If you don't mind having a TV thicker than a book, look into DLP's. They're 3D ready (though you'll need to buy adapters that are expected out this summer), and you can get a 60" for $1000.
3d games... sounds fun... 3d Games without glasses... would be amazing... 3d Games + Natal... epic
Is the daughter's shirt 3D or some shit, otherwise what the FUCK is mommy looking at????
Sent from my Microsoft Courier
@MattsZ
Engadget doesn't have signatures, so you actually typed out that "Send from my Microsoft Courier" line.
That's pretty sad, dude.
@KarlW He's from the future where both Engadget signatures and Couriers exist
@d0mth0ma5 exactly d0m, and Karl is from the 80s where people spell Carl with a K to show how metro they are.
@MattsZ And I'm from the future guy's future where you all are forced into working together for the common good when aliens show up to destroy your planet.
@KarlW I don't think you're too bright :/
@MattsZ She's clearly hiding her head from the dolphins. Makes sense to me. And if your grandmother had been raped to death by dolphins, you'd try to avoid eye contact too.
Or do I spend too much time inventing back-story for advertising graphics?
@cromulentgeek Classic!
Sent from my Apple Courier from the future, that has dolphins raping other dolphins
@Chris Dunning "Your planet". Alien!
@d0mth0ma5
she's probably wondering if that dolphin is about to go down on her daughter
@MattsZ She's getting motion sickness from the 3D and about to puke on her daughter
I really hope they don't thrust 3D on people so quickly like many game devs did with HD. I know a lot of people that really dislike 3D cinema but more importantly (and selfishly on my behalf), I'm blind in one eye. Oh well. It was inevitable I guess.
@Kombat Wombat
so if i walk around with an eye-patch on, does everything look like a movie/game?
@Kombat Wombat I hope they do. HD wasnt forced. 3D should be
Ecco was surprisingly a really good game.
I'm gonna hazard a guess that pretty much nobody will care that 3D isn't going to work on the PS3 immediately. Right now, 3D is way too expensive and complicated to become mainstream. Look how long it took HDTV to become widespread. Now that we got here, they expect everyone to chuck out their perfectly functional LCD TVs and buy a 3D one? Unlikely.
"sitting in front of the TV gazing at 3D dolphins emanating from you PlayStation 3"
I'm just wondering if your editor speaks native English?
@tehpinner it's called Engrish my friend, Engrish
@tehpinner
The art of grammar checking is gone, as no one does it anymore. Just look at cnet or the top news sources like Newsweek, you're bound to find some errors there. So this is nothing, but out of common courtesy and professionalsim, editors should demand that their reporters at least run grammar check and proof read prior to posting.
@xconan We do copy edit everything, but sometimes things still fall through the cracks. It's not something we're particularly proud of, but by all accounts, we do maybe 5 grammatical / spelling errors across 15,000 words spread out over 60 posts daily, or an estimated 0.03 percent that gets later corrected overnight. I would love to rummage through old newspapers and see what their error rates were (not being sarcastic, I'm legitimately curious now!), but I can live with those figures, correct myself, and move on.
At least they're not removing features again...
@pankomputerek
Update 3.9 (or something)
Video
* Added 3D to video games on Playstation 3
Update 4.0:
Video
* Removed all 3D and video capabilities after vulnerabilities found
This isn't a big deal, probably affects like 2 people.
@jrm125
but both of those people are me... and therein lies the problem
@MattsZ Yes
Not being grammar police at all. Just a question, I've noticed on websites and blogs the most common spelling mistake is "you" for "your". From the post..."emanating from you PlayStation 3". Is this cuz the spell correct doesn't pick it up?
Can someone photoshop a penis coming out of the the dolphins stomache?
@Springdaddy WHY?!
@IvanP91 I have no idea, really.
I stopped watching my Netflix Blu-rays now that Battlefield Bad Company 2 is out anyways.
I hope its 3D will work with all games, especially for 2.5D games like Bionic Commando Rearmed, and 2D games like PixelJunk Eden, adds another layer of visual texture.
Was I wrong to assume you needed hdmi 1.4 for blueray 3d?
@Original Nosebleed
HDMI doesn't do 1.4 out and will be able to output 3d so I don't think so. Don't know what happened to HDMI 1.4 TBQH
@Original Nosebleed
When they first got a Bravia 3d Tv in at the Sony store I went in. Talked to the sales rep, got him talking. Turns out they tried the 3dPs3 on the 1.3 inputs and all was working fine. If you have a 3d filter, seems like all it's going to be is no 1.4; no 1080p.
@Original Nosebleed 1.4 is a 'software' specification, the firmware update makes sure your current 1.3 (which was even 1.2 for the first PS3's) will do 1.4..
Thank you for the dolpin "shop". Pure awesomeness!
Do you need to have 3d support on your television to support the 3d from the ps3?
can someone explain to me what the difference in the new 3D tv's and the older movies like Spy Kids 3D is different? both require glasses, but the old movies were also 3D no?
@dapoktan
Although the concept is similar, the newer 3D technology presents the image using a more advanced method to overcome the negative effects of using color tint glasses and improve the use of 3D imaging in high resolution video.
@dapoktan Old red/green or red/blue glasses simply filter by color which messes up the overall colors etc. New tv accepts a higher framerate and also displays at this higher rate, where every other picture alternates right/left view. Active shutter-glasses close the appropriate lens at the same rate so that the eyes only see the frames meant for them.
