Sprint contest promises ten lucky jerks HTC EVO 4Gs before everyone else
You know what they say about Sprint Premier, the carrier's VIP program for loyal customers: membership has its privileges. Actually, that's the tagline for something completely unrelated, but we think it certainly applies here -- especially now that we've learned that Premier peeps have been invited to apply to win an EVO 4G before the superphone's general release. It's not as simple as dropping your name in a hat, though: you've got to tell Sprint in at least 150 words what you can do "really fast," presumably with the goal of making the judges laugh, cry, and generally love you. Ten winners will be notified on May 18 that they've been selected, at which point you'll get a phone, a year of free service, and a job as a blogger on an official Sprint site about your experiences with the handset through August 31 (hopefully using a contest management system that's compatible with Eclair's not-always-awesome browser). What's more, four of those ten will get "long summer weekend" trips to a Sprint 4G-enabled city; it's not Venice by any stretch, but hey, the EVO's the important thing here, right?

Pick me. Pick me.
That is all.
@Bandigolo
It doesn't have a front facing camera.
@JS Look above the Sprint logo in this picture http://blog.gsmarena.com/pics/10/03/htc-evo-4g/main.jpg
@JS
your face doesnt have a front facing camera...
sorry, good call on noticing
@doug
no, it has TWO!
sprint is making big STRIDES in public opinion with their great publicity strategy IMO!!!
@cwalters74
This doesn't imply that the EVO won't be out until Aug 31st, does it? If so, FAIL.
@Bandigolo
this phone is CDMA? hahahaahahahah
@steel, June 6th is the rumor for ordering and instore June 13th.
And no it seems that others will have it by the time the blog stuff goes up.
My girl said that the vibrate function needs to be faster.
@N900
For all you know, that's a light sensor. It's WAY too small to be a camera. Most smartphones have lighting sensors to lower/increase screen brightness.
@Woovie The EVO 4G has a front-facing camera, but our understanding is that it won't be provided with video chat software by Sprint at launch.
@credo the front cam costs OEMS like $4, hahhahaaa
@N900 My eris has something like that in the upper left hand corner, I thought it was an led, but now idk what it is.
pick me 2
meh give me a decent 4g blanket over los angeles and i will be happy.
screw waiting, i want those towers in NOW!
@d889
Yes. Los Angeles AND Orange County please, for someone like me who travels between them a lot.
Well my wife tells me im really fast in bed.
@beatboiii poor u :-(
@coolpal EVO > What she thinks
@coolpal more like poor her ;)
@beatboiii
As long as you get yours, thats all that matters.... LMAO
@beatboiii
Actually, that's the best .... less energy is wasted in that way. -:)
blazing across the country huh....sounds like another willy nelson tour....ZING! but nahhhh i would like to have one :-)
I got the email for this about 2 hours ago. I've already registered and started the daily sacrifices.
Jerks? Why all the hate? It could be you :)
@coolpal
No doubt; I'd be happy as hell if it was me.
I normally don't enter contests. Hell, I rarely even enter the ones on Engadget where all I have to do is comment.
... but this? THIS? For a frikkin' EVO - hell yes I will write a damn essay.
i'd like one.
"at least 150 words"
So it's 150 or more, not what's written above.
Sprint gone all out for release of EVO 4G
So final production handsets are going to a few lucky consumers on May 18th. I wonder if this is any indication of when the rest of us will be able to buy them?
@TechGuySteve
I think the leak was correct. June 6th or June 13th. It makes sense in a symmetrical way. The Pre, the prior flagship device, was released on June 6th. Sprint would naturally want to get something out for the S|P folks like myself who are eligible for upgrade.
@Einnyen Sprint allows for an upgrade after 22 months... so if their intention was for pre customers to upgrade, it shouldve been out in april
@Einnyen sorry my bad, for some reason i thought the pre came out 2 years ago :x
@Skwidwerd Premiere customers get an upgrade after one year, not 22 months. The Palm Pre came out in June 2009...
@Skwidwerd
Wrong. For people who bought the Pre, they all are now Premier customers (if they have been paying their bills on time). That allows you to upgrade your phone in 12 months, instead of 22. The Pre came out in June of 2009, therefore, June of 2010, those customers are able to get a new phone without having to pay the off-contract price.
screw the games... just ship it
I entered this morning, but didn't notice the notification date - that's my birthday, and would make a pretty awesome present.
Sadly, if contest winners are notified on May 18, that means the phone is almost certainly not shipping to regular losers in May. *shrug*
Jerks? Oh, shut up, you!
At least it's coming to where you live.
No love for canucks, as always . . .
@blueskyv201 With a population less than californial, and 90% of all residents within 10 miles of the border, tower placement seems confusing
@killplay
I dont suppose 4G covers all of United States either, just the big cities most likely.
Plus, 4G isn't the reason I want this phone, there's plenty of other reasons.
I've had Sprint service since October 16 and I'm still not Sprint Premiere. I have had a base statement of $70 each month and pay it off in full each month.
How do I get myself Premiere status?? They said it kicks in after six months.
@HurricaneDC sign up. its simple. go and long in to your account at sprint.com and to the right there should be a menu of difrent tools. and tips. one of them should have the sp logo and ask u if u wld like to apply to become a sprint premier. u apply. if ur plan is 69.99 or more a month u get accepted. its awsome. they had me at new phone every 12 months
Just a collection of personal info and a new mailing list to resell. *tin foil hat*
How about a contest to receive an Android 2.1 update? :(
If this is their first 4G phone, then why have they been advertising 4G for a year?
@killplay Pretty sure they were advertising 4G for their laptop modem cards... Though I agree the ads were a wee bit misleading. They probably didn't say it was available at the time at all though.
@killplay
Sprint Overdrive
Yeah I signed up for it If I do win.
This is what i'll do for you engadget.
I'll go to a bar german preferably. I'll ADVISE MY BUDDY that I will "loose" the phone.
He will contact you for an exclusive first look of the htc evo 4g.
We both bank. You get a cover story I get my face plastered all over your site revealing all my information.
Is a win win situation. I know iis not an iphone but hey is the biggest release of android YET!!
