HTC EVO 4G gets hacked Froyo port, Sense UI be damned
You know what happens when you give EVO 4Gs to a room full of some of the brightest developers the world has to offer? Well, [expletive] is going to go down, that's what -- so it comes as little surprise that the phone's already been blessed with a seemingly functional Froyo port, even though neither the phone nor the operation system have even seen a public release yet. The largest distribution of the EVO so far has come at the hands of Google itself, which provided the Android 2.1- and Sense-equipped handsets to attendees of its recent IO conference; a timely upgrade to Android 2.2 has unquestionably been a big sticking point for would-be buyers, though, so it's good to see that early owners are already hard at work making this happen. Root is naturally required for the 2.2 port to work -- and there will undoubtedly be some hurdles to overcome to make this totally usable -- but we have full faith in these lovely wunderkinds. Follow the break for video evidence of a Froyo'd EVO in the wild.

Sweet i want one !!
@nanosman
if the front camera works with qik on this, then im seriously rooting it.
@nanosman me too actually, I don't give a damn about HTC Sense UI just give me EVO with Froyo!
@Becauseitsnotgoogle2
You've got to pay the troll toll!
@nanosman lol @ having to "hack" an Android phone to put the latest OS on it. This is the main thing keeping me away from the OS right now and looking forward to iPhone OS 4.0. Google needs to fix this. Sure I could get a Nexus One but they are too expensive on AT&T.
@Becauseitsnotgoogle2
It's hated one in disguise!
@n8equalsd
Or possibly acount5, I haven't seen him 'round these parts in a little while
@Becauseitsnotgoogle2 Do you ever have anything nice to say about something that isn't Microsoft?
@Becauseitsnotgoogle2
Why are you always on every Android article trolling away? Nobody even said flamebait yet and yet here you are. No mention of bing, Microsoft, Apple, iphone or what have you. Seriously, what is your problem? If you don't like Android then go sing your praises to bing and microsoft on the windows phone and microsoft related articles.
@phinn You don't -have- to root your phone to get the latest updates. When your carrier decides to give them to you then you'll get it. Otherwise, it's the same as jailbreaking an iphone. Google is not affiliated with any of the many carriers that sell and manage phones running Android, and therefore have no control over when a phone gets updated, save for the nexus one. The reason iphones get updated all at once is because it's one phone, under one company, under one network so they are able to manage that properly. If you don't want to get a nexus one then I don't know what to tell ya. Either gather up the balls to root the phone or wait for your carrier distribute your update.
@Physicsguy89
I know, it's just that hated one says that all the time.
@Becauseitsnotgoogle2 Thats funny I can get a full day from my Evo 4g! Stop trolling on the Android topics please.
@Becauseitsnotgoogle2, are you serious or are you joking? The EVO can do simul-voice/data, over 4G and Wifi. Sprint and Verizon have been rated to have the best call quality and the least drop calls, yeah you're right, CDMA is inferior.
****BE CAREFUL****
Google have said the leaked Froyo version is not the approved version.
@nanosman Finally, hopefully the official announcement for this one won't be too along after June 4. http://j.mp/4g-evo-june-4
@Becauseitsnotgoogle2 You douche-cock you stole that entire quote from techcrunch then used it as your own. Time to go find a new bridge.
http://techcrunch.com/2010/05/29/htc-evo-4g/
@phinn Lol blame the manufacturer not android itself. Sometimes I wonder if people who bash android know anything about how it works.
@nanosman
I would love to know the benchmark on this baby with Froyo!
@phinn Actually you dont HAVE to hack it to get the newest software. FroYo hasn't even been released yet, neither to the source tree or the public. It'd be like saying iPhones were crap because they don't already run OS 4.0.
There are so many things wrong with your post, one it is running the latest software froyo is not even out yet. This phone itself has not been released yet either.
@phinn Oh, yeah, and sticking with the mediocre products of apple is really gonna get you what you want when it comes to the newest OS.
For Crapple stuff you have to buy a completely new device every time a new OS for it comes out.
There's no upgrading at all without a hefty bill.
So yeah, you keep throwing your money at the Draconian Apple. See how much change it gets you with them.
(Spoiler alert! As long as people keep putting up with Apple's "pay for everything we say you have to" crap, they'll never change...)
@Becauseitsnotgoogle2
Way to copy and paste. If you're going to badmouth something, at least be original and dont plagarize it.
@LanDROID Yeah I as soon as I started reading that I was like "wait...I read this 2 days ago" lol. Stupid troll
Now all you have to do is change its hardware so that it can receive signals in canada from any carrier!
WHY HTC... WHY!!
@uckApple
:@
At this point I have 2 options..
1. Wait 1-2 years for this beast to come to canada
2. Get a lousy iPhoneHD (or w.e it is) in september or June or w.e and suffer from the tiny screen and crippled os, but have it backed up by the huge app store / cydia store.
dammittttttt
HTC your ruining me here... WTF!
@uckApple
trolls shouldn't complain...
@uckApple uck you as hole!
@uckApple
You are an idiot. Check out the interview on the evo 4g online btw. You have no idea what the new iPhone will offer, crippled os?, and large screens are overrated. You troll.
@uckApple A 3.5" screen is actually quite big. The Evo 4g / Droid Incredible have been complained about because their screen size is too large. The icons like slightly too large and out of place because they are stretched for a size too large. Also, the iPhone OS isn't crippled. It is just as capable as Android with its push notifications, pseudo multitasking, and folders. I would say the iPhone has a much more capable OS than Android at the moment because it has a tighter control over the hardware so all apps work on any iPhone, unlike Android phones. Things just look more polished on the iPhone than Android phones for now. Also, not everything is perfect on the Evo. Though it records 720p video, it has shitty compression on that "HD" video so it looks kinda weird. Even though the iPhone may not have all the GODLY specs, it does what it claims well.
Why do people that make 7 figures a year get free stuff?
@engadgetcomexcludeengadget
So they can make more money duh :oP
@engadgetcomexcludeengadget Why should people that make less than 7 figure get free stuff instead?
@Narutogrey
Who said they should? :S
@engadgetcomexcludeengadget
Because more or less they actually do more work than the people that make less
@Narutogrey Because those people making 7 figures are making 7 figures because of the people making 5 figures.
@engadgetcomexcludeengadget Well in this case that's very easy to answer. Google is obviously trying to push development on these phones/the Android OS so giving it out to the people that make such developments is a smart business move on their part. Also considering the price of a ticket to the event I wouldn't exactly call it a "free for nothing" handout =p.
@engadgetcomexcludeengadget as someone else posted they werent exactly free when you take the event ticket price into consideration. you sound like one of those that complains about everyone that makes more than 5 figure incomes. guess what the people making 6-7 figure incomes generally took alot of risk at some point in their life to get there, yeah some were lucky and it fell in their laps. Do you want to get there, grow some balls and take some risk in life
@d0ug Not all of them really enjoy what they're doing though. *shrug* Some people in life choose to make lots of money doing something they don't really like or care for, others choose to do something they love but not make a ton of money off of it. Doesn't mean one works any harder or took any bigger risks than the other. To each his own, you know?
@Narutogrey Yes...:/
operation system?
@trekrema
Don't know man, might be windows mobile, maybe webOS?
It's obviously not android though, not at ALL.
@TickLe MY eLMo I do believe he is referring to this.
"even though neither the phone nor the operation system have even seen a public release yet."
@trekrema: "operation system?"
Fingers.
iv never been so focused on a piece of tech before..This wait has been very difficult. I keep reminding myself "its only a phone" but every time i read new info i giggle like a school girl..
SAD I KNOW.
@neeko18
I know!!!
This phone is just so beyond anything I have ever wanted in a damn phone..!
You cant even imagine how frustrated I am, living in canada and not being able to get a damn signal out of this machine!
@uckApple
I so agree... Why can't htc make a gsm/3g version! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh *sobs like little school girl who just got pregnant*
@neeko18
+1 for taking the words out my mouth. In my neighborhood (aka ghetto of nyc) I heard some people (they dont know ANYTHING about tech) talking about the Evo 4g! This phone is gonna sell like hotcakes =)
@Mike Vick
NYC is getting 4G soon too. Glad to hear you will benefit from it (From Long Island)
@Yourdogsdead
NYC will be having 4G by September to be specific.
A few friends on facebook who also know junk about technologies, want this phone. It's way more popular than the attention HD2 got when it was released for T-Mobile. And I think it's partly thanks to Sprint's 4G.
@Yourdogsdead
Bro, this was last week in front of the bodega. Im like the nerdy type and I heard like two of my boys talking about the new 4g sprint phone and how they were getting it LOL.. I was just surprised. Neither of them have computers at home and both are on at&t... So with no advertising people in the bx, bk etc are hearing about,
P.s i just came from Long Island this morning. Beautiful neigborhoods =)
@Mike Vick
Keep dreaming.
Its gonna bomb...
