LCD bending art... ever hear of it? No? Well, let us educate you. LCD bending involves pressing a finger on a cracked LCD that's turned on -- with some pretty impressive and beautiful results. We're not suggesting you smash your displays for art's sake or anything, but see for yourself in the video after the break.
@Frawley Mercury poisoning? mercury is not used in LCD panels. It is used in the older generation CCFL backlighting, but in most cases the CCFL tubes are not broken when an LCD is cracked
you would be at Kaptein KUK's YouTube channel, but... aaa smashing Apple products here ..aaa yea let the special ones know how you feel.. aaa it may be the last few aaa
I'm a graphic/communication designer and I do consider myself an artist. I see art as something that someone put forth an effort to create. This does not require effort, so I do not see it as art. I see it as something that comes along with the production of an LCD screen.
@krazyjack That's a quick conclusion. It depends; if the person involved first cracks screens and explores ways and shapes of cracks, and/or experiments with how to apply pressure (or at what angle) to the screen after it already has been cracked, to get it just right, it is, by your very own definition, art. Funny, you start out saying what art is, and then say that this can not be it, even though by the very definition you just gave, it quite possibly may be.
I see where you're coming from. I do agree that everything is art. The LCD screen (before breakage) is art, my car is art, the roof under where I live is art. But so is someone who puts a piece of bread in a toaster and sees Jesus, or someone who smears their buggers on a wall. It infuriates me that some people get the credit of "art" when they did nearly no work at all.
So I agree that everything is art, and I also agree that the previous statement is BS.
No they're not. Fractals are infinite, you zoom them in and after a few iterations you end up with the same initial pattern. The stuff on the video is just a finite collection of funny looking pixels.
"Artists" are annoying. Art was useful once upon a time, even a viable career, but now it is largely useless. Most artists are utterly pretentious and talentless.
HOW exactly is this art? Sure it's interesting to look at like fractals are interesting to look at. But there is no talent needed to crack a screen and run your fingers along it. Oh and the heavy breathing in the video is just creepy.

These seem like the artists that don't know how to paint, but still want to become artists.
@Meekermoloko Does it really matter how art comes to be? I like the way it looks
@Meekermoloko
Looks more like LSD bending to me.
@Meekermoloko
I'd call them "retartists"
You know what the funny part is?
My LCD monitor has had a crack in it, and a week later it turned out almost like the one in that video.
So I guess you could say my MONITOR is an artist, because all I did was throw a pen at it...
@DoctarPeppar
LOOOOOOOL
Engadget comments never fail to make me laugh!
@McKirf Side effects include beautiful art, and mercury poisoning.
@Meekermoloko
If I had Eyefinity 6 - I could create a masterpiece.

don't cut yourself!
@Marko
dont blow your self up.
@Marko
This qualifies as art as much as me pooing on a paper plate and smearing it around with my finger.
@Marko
Wow your picture is AWESOME
My friend would do this occasionally, lightly pressing, on his MacBook's broken screen. I believe it was caused by him smashing the lid closed. :P
when little jimmy smashed the TV with his Wii agian, you know where they're going
Can't this explode on you?
So my iPhone fell out of my pocket the other day and its screen broke, apparently I'm an artist.
@cjori

@Zylam
Your 'a'-key seems to be malfunction. Thought you might want to know that.
@Zylam
...aaa.....
WTF?

Your comment is a art.

Make an app out of this and you have another useless application for touchscreens! Still, it is pretty cool how lively the broken screens are.
Ooooooh, pretty colors.
Art for geeks!!
Those patterns are fractals. I wonder if there is a technical explanation for them?
@Ed T
No they're not. Fractals are infinite, you zoom them in and after a few iterations you end up with the same initial pattern. The stuff on the video is just a finite collection of funny looking pixels.
@migmanson
actually, yes, they are fractal patterns. probably because liquid crystal is involved.
@brianhj Actually no, they aren't.

@technoreaper
way to mindlessly generalise.
FRACTALS!
NOT!
The guy drumming at the end was interesting. Interesting in the sense that he was both a shit artist and a shit musician.
cracked LCDs make me sad lol

This will prolly blend
All of our LCDs will be cracked come tomorrow literally EVERY article will be 'breaking'
I doubt these can play crysis anymore
Don't be on drugs while doing this.
looks like fractal art! and yes, i said "art"!
This reminds me of what I used to do with my busted calculators in elementary school. Good times...
I don't think my LCD monitor likes watching that video on fullscreen.
When I break the screens on my laptops, the last thing that goes through my mind is "how can I turn my $1000 laptop into an art project?"
One word: Wow!
