I really don't care about the specs anymore...when I see that wite iPhone I just gotta have it. If engadget syas it's fine, it will be I guess. White iPhone (drool, drool, drool) here I come baby!
@bakkermaarten007 LMAO.... wow I gotta know about specs if im gonna dish out 199 or 299 for a phone on a horrible network, I better be getting my moneys worth from the actual device! But the iPhone 4 looks impressive.... I doubt I would get it though.
@bakkermaarten007 That is what is wrong with the Apple community. Most don't care about specs, just about how pretty their phone is. Functionality? Who needs the phone to work if it looks good? Pfft!
@tklr08 It's more about the whole package, Apple's products don't have the highest specs but the UI is usually excellent (they look good on the outside and the "inside").
@tklr08 As opposed to the Android Community that care about specs that translate to nothing when actually using the device. I'm giving up my Incredible for this device, an easy decision. A company producing products of this build quality will get my support, every time.
@tklr08 I study industrial design, and i'm sorry to say, but the user experience and attractiveness are much more important than specs. Of course you need good specs for a good user experience! And I'm sorry to say, but definitely before the HTC+Android combination, the user experience of other smartphones suck.
@bakkermaarten007 I wish engadget people who like the evo would understand the slide about liberal arts that steve put up, its completely true what steve said, the iphone is what makes a phone easy to use, its uniform, the software always ties especially close with the hardware. Sure the Evo Has great hardware but to me it just seems like HTC put that thing together just to make another product that would sell to the tech geeks, I mean 4 g 3g, bluetooth, and tethering is great, But not everyone is a tech geek, On the iphone, the way you can use face time exactly when you need it, without any required set up is simply incredible, they must have really worked hard on that to make it so seamless. Steve was right on the D8 conference when he said that the Asian electronics market has the hardware right but the software still needs work. The iphone will be successful again, because Apple is targeting to people like who you saw in that video about facetime, not just the average tech geek like us on engadget, these type of people will get it. Even the people who are technically superior will also get it because it honestly is one heck of a phone, Its got the hard ware to compete with (Front and Back Camera, Gyroscope, A4 processor) HTC, Nokia, and Palm. And its got the software that can get not so techy people to buy it because it is easy, simple, and fun to use. Just looking at it now it is so much more than a phone, you can edit your movies straight off it. I really think steve did a great job by getting the people such as Johnny Ive, Bob Mansfeild, to stand up and take the applause because they really did work their tails off to give us consumers a phone that really changes the way we use it.
@Lexis I've returned several pretty phones because they weren't fast enough. I don't really care what my phone looks like as long as it is snappy and does everything I need it to do.
@bakkermaarten007 yeh, but specs never mattered on iphones. The 3gs processor would be half as powerful as the competitors and still provide an overall snappier experience
I counted 27 different posts yesterday about Apple. Then we get this 10 page write up. Then it concludes with "Well we're holding final judgments until we have a chance to give the iPhone 4 the official Engadget review ...". This wasn't the review?
Wow. For a phone that has 2 pieces of glass and an "enhanced" screen resolution that you can't see unless you're about 3" away from the screen (when compared to the more traditional 800x480) I'm just not getting it. Nice incremental upgrades. If you like iPhones you will probably want to upgrade. But is there any compelling feature that is going to win over new customers? I just don't see it. And I certainly don't see why there has to be sooooo much coverage of it.
Yea, I agree. I want to know how much RAM it has and What they clocked the A4 at. But man, I do love the white. I believe that will be my color of choice...I'm tired of the black.
In an iPhone4 vs. Evo matchup...The iPhone 4 LOSES. Sorry its just the way it is. HDMI out and 720p video look great on the Vizio 19" monitor. http://www.epinions.com/content_513931382404
Specs are not king. (even though this phone is easily on par with the Evo as far as specs go). The biggest downside is the 5mp camera vs. the 8mp camera, but honestly, as a photographer, I know that pixels only give you so much, the most important stuff is the quality of the device. I shoot with a Nikon D40 and D200, both have 5-6mp sensors, and they take INCREDIBLE shots...compared to my wife's new 10mp point and shoot.
Even if the new iPhone wasn't equal or better in specs, it wouldn't mater. The problems that have plagued Android from the beginning (lack of unification and smooth UI - until sense) aren't found in Apple products. If it works, then it works, nothing more need be said or argued.
I'm not an Apple fan boy. I dislike macs and don't personally have a need for an iPad, but since I've owned my 3G, I've come to appreciate the UI and how it works. (Yes, I've played with multiple Android devices from my friends). The only Android device I've used recently that matches up to the iOS line is the Evo...and still, the multi-tasking on that phones is not really the best, battery time is also an issue, and that Amoled screen doesn't look so great outside.
I thought my phone was big, till I handled the EVO...just a little big imo...
You dont' have to like the new iPhone, but you really can't say that it can't compete with all the other phones, it's packaged the hardware in a tight good-looking solution based around a great UI. That's all it takes.
@Hell Angel Totally agree with your comments. As a tech geek myself, sometimes I like to use something I don't have to tinker with or hack or have an overload of features I may only use once. Sometimes I want something that just works. It may be boring to some, but my smartphone is something I rather have do a few things great.
@tklr08 That's funny. Seems like most Apple haters would say, "Functionality? Who needs the phone to work if it has the best stats? Pfft!" I've watched an Evo owner and enthusiast try to show me all his great functionality. Most of it just barely worked, and if he wasn't the type to play with gadgets often, his Evo would be performing even less functions while he further struggled with it.
"the new phone puts Apple ahead of the curve" Disagree. Evo 4G > iphone 4 Oh and my Nexus One with Froyo 2.2 has a battery that lasts 30h without recharging. I dont think the iphone can beat Froyo.
@tklr08 Then don't buy it moron but don't lump some people in with some fictionalize account of what an Apple buyer is. Some of us actually research our purchases just fine thank you. And you sitting around casually claiming that people who buy Apple products are some group of misinformed idiots who are only into what looks good only makes you look dumb. Just like you we can claim rather uneducated things about people who refuse to use Apple products as well, but usually we don't. FYI, I used Windows exclusively and built my own PC's rather than buy prebuilt for 2 decades, so yeah claim I'm a fanboy who has never been educated in the ways of the glorious Windows or Linux world. Sick of you guys bad mouthing products most of you have never even used for more than a few minutes.
Here's my question. When you look at the data plans, even when there was the unlimited data plans there was an enterprise level plan.
I was always told that in order to configure the phone for an exchange account you HAD to have the enterprise level data plan.
AT&T has done this again with it's new data plan tiers as there is a Enterprise Datapro for iPhone option.
If i want to change my plan so I can tether, do i HAVE to go with the enterprise level to keep my exchange email configured? Or can i just go with the regular Datapro plan?????
I'm defiantly going to get this new iPhone, I hate that AT&T charges you $30 a month, if you don't use the Internet and don't really stream videos then you can get the $15 for 500 MB. I'm going to get the white version.
@bakkermaarten007 Wow you dont care about specs on a device your going to buy? Why dont you go back to a rzr im pretty sure you where among the first to dish out 500 bills for that phone a few years back.
Nobody in their right mind would dish out money based on easthetics. Wait apple fanboys do.
Your comment was just an insult to gadgets. GET A LIFE!!!
Unlike you Iworry about specs and since i am well informed on what the next iphone brings spec wise. I agree with you on one thing. That white iphone is one hot piece of glass.
@tklr08 Specs have VERY little to do with functionality. What gets me about those who think iPhone buyers belong to a community is that they have no freaking clue how different architectures interact...and they ignore quality for quantity.
@tklr08 That is not true. What if it did what you wanted it to do, but did not do it well... or did it well, but required you to bend over backwards to get it to work.
@rfarmer5280 You can use Exchange with any data plan. I was under this impression for awhile too before I purchased my 3GS. (I'll be getting an iPhone 4 on the 24th...no question)
I have to agree. People need to chill on the > signs. I don't see much of anything on the EVO that is better than the iPhone that isn't a matter of personal preference. These phones seem very similar hardware-wise to me.
@bakkermaarten007 did you realize something.... I think you are the first one on endgadget to be downranked to oblivion, and then get the highest ranked post. That is quite surprising
@Beatnik completely agree I'm running froyo on my Droid and it is amazing the iPhone 4 is good but there is so much wasted space around the edges. But I'll stick to android due to my overwhelming desire to be able to do whatever I want to my phone.
@Hell Angel , Quote: On the iphone, the way you can use face time exactly when you need it> C'mon Son!! Only on wifi buddy! So that statement isn't true I might want to use it on a train or give it to my sister on the passenger side of my car while im driving. then what? Huh? I can't because, I'm not choke hold to a wifi hotspot. Lol Clear 4G Wimax will always rule buddy. I can use my EVO exactly when I need it! So I don't understand why you said that false statement, because you know it isn't true.
The D200 has the same base resolution as the my D40 (which I said had up to a 6mp range)
I know the D200 I use is an older camera, maybe the newer ones have a higher res? I know my cameras, the D200 I'm shooting does not have a 10.2 mp sensor.
@Chazwell i'm so glad you, as an android user, admit it. I have nothing against android, but you are 100000000000% right when you say the specs translate into nothing. and you're correct. it's not like a desktop where a faster processor translates into faster results, because it's all based around the UI. any desktop you build runs windows, but mobile phones are much different when it comes to hardware + software. that's why a 3gs still beat some much higher spec'd phones. with apple, they spend over a year building one hell of a device. htc and android throw a new one out every 2 months, and although on paper they look good, they're not the same quality or experience as an iphone. I have the choice of an evo, iPhone, or incredible. and i'm buying this new iPhone.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
@bakkermaarten007
Not surprised really.
Apart from the nice jump in screen resolution the rest of the specs are just pretty standard/boring.
@bakkermaarten007
That is what is wrong with the Apple community. Most don't care about specs, just about how pretty their phone is. Functionality? Who needs the phone to work if it looks good? Pfft!
@Techeternity Wait for the iPod Touch 4th generation?

@bakkermaarten007 It really looks like a Great Device but im happy with my EVO and im sure people will be happy with the iPhone 4
@tklr08
I study industrial design, and i'm sorry to say, but the user experience and attractiveness are much more important than specs. Of course you need good specs for a good user experience!

@tklr08
We care that is works well, not how big the settings menu is.
Spec lists are important for people like you as it validates your purchase if you have something on it that someone else doesn't
@bakkermaarten007

@bjsguess can we get over screen resolution? 960*640 is useless in 3.5 inch,professional photographer prints 200 dpi for exhibition so why we need so much useless pixel and processor hunger? look:
http://www.have-camera-will-travel.com/field_reports/the_300_dpi_print_myth.html
@Bakerdk hey bro the d200 has a 10.2 megapixel sensor and the d40 has a 6 megapixel sensor. not trolling, just clearing things up.
@Hell Angel Totally agree with your comments. As a tech geek myself, sometimes I like to use something I don't have to tinker with or hack or have an overload of features I may only use once. @Seb6554 Wise words! I'll look for that when its out and wait until WIN7 is in the mix before I sign two years of my life away.
"the new phone puts Apple ahead of the curve"
Disagree. Evo 4G > iphone 4
Oh and my Nexus One with Froyo 2.2 has a battery that lasts 30h without recharging. I dont think the iphone can beat Froyo.

@Beatnik
Even the Samsung Galaxy S > iphone 4
So what you're saying, Engadget, is that it's pretty good and it'll sell millions?
Who'd have thunk it?
@Beatnik You're probably not using it very much then.
@Beatnik
I have to say this, EVO owners are getting worse than apple fanboys on Engadget. Let's all just respect both devices please.
@Hell Angel
That was really well said man, good job :D
Here's my question. When you look at the data plans, even when there was the unlimited data plans there was an enterprise level plan.

@Bakerdk : Look at the iPhone 4 camera samples. I'm a photographer and they look pretty clean to me. Definitely not your average camera phone.
http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-camera-samples/#3057463
@Beatnik Sounds like you read that in a dream rather than a press release.
@EagleyeSmith According to gizmodo x2 of the 3G S
I'm defiantly going to get this new iPhone, I hate that AT&T charges you $30 a month, if you don't use the Internet and don't really stream videos then you can get the $15 for 500 MB. I'm going to get the white version.

@Bakerdk The Evo does not have an AMOLED screen. It's a TFT LCD.

Would not want to see your home interior. You obviously did not buy furniture for its aesthetics.
