Well look at that -- Adobe's now officially serving up
Flash Player 10.1 on its download pages. If you're anything like us, you've been running 10.1 since it
hit Release Candidate status a couple months ago, but if you've held off the upgrade brings some much-needed hardware acceleration to the mix, as well as other assorted performance enhancements and improvements. We're curious to see if the various issues with
Broadcom Crystal HD netbooks have been resolved in this final version, and Mac users will have to wait for
the "Gala" update to see any hardware-powered boost on their systems, but it's nice to finally see Adobe ship this thing. Let us know how it goes in comments, yeah?
Update: Sorry folks -- contrary to reports, it doesn't look like the Gala hardware acceleration code was secretly included in the OS X build, as we just tried it on a new MacBook Pro and the graphics didn't switch over to the discrete chip. What's more, the
Gala project page is still alive and kicking with a release date expected "following the release of Flash Player 10.1." We'll just have to be patient, we suppose.
[Thanks, Neal and Sam]
yea i did hold off, its flash after all...
I LOVE FLASH
@max1c
Are there alternatives to Adobe Flash* by any chance? Like Acrobat has Foxit alternative for example? There has to be, even Realplayer had an alternative!
*I mean that actually play flash, not something else like Silverlight.
About effin time!!!!!!!!!
@Almo I have no problems with flash, i just don't think its the best thing in the world...
@Almo
Yes, there is Gnash and Swfdec. Both is very far from up to date though and with limited functionality.
I really think not many people see the need for an alternative with Flash. Acrobat Reader and Real Player is very bloated with lots of features not needed if you simply want to view pdf's or real media. Personally I very much prefer Foxit and Real Alternative because of that.
The Flash Player on the other hand is tiny, and anything you remove from the player would limit it's usefulness.
@Psilion
Thanks for the info! +vote
It installs fast and easy.
Works fine on my comp...
Watching the 2010 World Cup KICK-OFF stream on ESPN.
Q6600 and not one of the 4 cores is over 10% =D

@max1c Same. Besides, the beta broke certain Flash streaming applications, and had flickering full screen video on both my Macs.
Same with their "Gala" update, which should have been released with this.
@Psilion How do I know if Flash is using "hardware acceleration"? Is there a way to force hardware-acceleration, or is it done by default?
@divyamistry
Apart from checking if you notice a decrease in CPU usage I do not know of a way to check that.
I noticed now that according to this article HW acceleration for OSX is not included in this release. So if you are using OSX, you still need to use the Gala beta: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/gala/
The requirements are also listed on that page:
"Hardware accelerated decode requires Mac OS X 10.6.3 and either NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, GeForce 320M or GeForce GT 330M GPUs."
The Gala beta will show a while square in the top right corner if the video is HW accelerated.
If your on Windows you also need a gfx card with drivers that are supported, and only H.264 can be accelerated regardless of platform.
Here is a pdf with a list of gfx cards and drivers which can provide HW acceleration with Windows:

@max1c
anyone else having trouble with chrome crashing after installation. Didn't happen on RC builds of flash, tho i just installed the latest beta build of chrome today
@Psilion talking about Adobe Reader being bloated. I just installed Adobe Reader (normally using Foxit) 'cause of In-Browser PDF support and Adobe reader now always sets itself as standard. Im really annoyed by that, is there any way to forbid Adobe Reader doing that? Changed the standard reader several times... Oh and im using Windows 7
Anyone else having the same problems?
@Kaboof
You may want to consider trying PDF-XChange Viewer, which is another free PDF reader, and which offers an in-browser option.
I quit using Foxit in favor of this one.
@Dan A wtf? flash 10.1 opens windows into the future? kickoff is tomorrow buddy, cut the bs
@Almo Yikes. Foxit? It's malware as far as I'm concerned. I use Sumatra PDF.
@Kaboof So many problems that I kissed Reader off years ago and now deal only with Sumatra.
Can't wait for this for my N900..
..someday
@Broderbund
Did symbian get it too (today)?
@HotDog
Symbian only has light, havent heard of any 10.1 news
The Flash error message for WebOS says "Flash coming to WebOS in the first half of 2010."
So they still got 3 weeks, give or take . . .
@Smart People Play Tuba
Flash player for WebOS has been finished for some time now, it's now up to Palm to release the updated OS that carries it.
Flash...
No thanks!
@TheEvilMachinist
Yeah. I like having to try and hunt down alternatives instead of just clicking a readily available file too.
@TheEvilMachinist
Hmmm...it seems to be crashing Safari every time I load a flash video and now it's saying 'Missing Plugin'. Jobs was right. *retreats to iPhone*
@R762mm That's a shame, it's working fine on my Firefox browser, 37% CPU usage.
@R762mm
Hmm... seems to be fine in my windows version of safari. 10% CPU usage while watching youtube HD.
@N900 .. Firefox on Mac or PC ?
Because Flash is crashing more often than normal for me as well. Adobe has once again shown its love for the Mac platform.
@taligent
Sure I mean it's not as if half their customers own Macs so, yeah, they really try to piss them off on purpose.
I don't think the fault is entirely Adobe's here.
@taligent
You can't blame them for not loving apple now. I personally wouldn't release anything more for mac but then I'm not a CEO.
Yay
Still stuck on light.

@commenter7 Any chance this is what's holding up the OTA Froyo update for Nexus One?
@The Shadow is that y I can't play farmville ?
@RedBean
A message from the future!... nice...
@mondeca
Yep, at the official N1 forum a google employee has stated that they are just preparing the OTA update for release within the coming weeks, apparently there would be additional unannounced features. Early updaters would also get the OTA.
@justosac
You should be able to play farmville with flash light, I haven't tried farmville because I don't play it, but I have played a few Facebook flash games on my Evo.
