Developer gets Sony's Remote Play working on non-VAIO machines
Sony has been teasing its Remote Play functionality to a few devices, including the Aino and its VAIO laptops, but if your possession of Sony gadgets doesn't extend beyond your home entertainment center you've been out of luck. Not any more, courtesy of a developer who goes by the handle NTAuthority, who has managed to get Remote Play to work on any machine -- any machine that can run Windows 7, at least. NTAuthority's patch allows Sony's VAIO Remote Play app to run on non-VAIOs, and from the reports we're seeing in forums it even works on a Windows VMware instance hosted on a Mac. That 400kb patch is on the other end of that source link below, so if you feel like giving it a shot it at least it won't take long to download.

Get an Evo.
Just jokin
@Dr Lisbon
Way to be relevant.
Oh you were joking you say?
I hope you weren't joking either because it wasn't remotely funny.
I would love to have this working on my non vaio laptop
@MoonWalkerCTE
I know this is about non Vaio pcs but I just installed it on my Vaio SR (no hack). Tried SSF4; doesn't work. I can't even boot the PS3 from within the Remote Play software. What is the use of this program?
@MoonWalkerCTE
Good question. I tried Remote play with my PSP and PS3 and I've never gotten it to work. Some other people I know have tried also they all report similar results. I'd like to know what these people who can get it to work are doing different.
@MoonWalkerCTE
Me too
When I saw Remote Play was coming to Sony computers only I knew it was only a matter of time until somebody cracked it.
@MoonWalkerCTE Yeah the PS3 seems to be a hit or miss device in terms of networking reliability. I've *never* gotten it to see my Windows 7 WMP library, despite the 2 supposedly being compatible. Also, it can see only 1 PS3 Media Server instance on my LAN, despite the fact that I have 2. I don't think I'll waste my time trying to figure this particular trick out.
@chaos uhhhh SSF4 is not a remote play title to my knowledge....
PS1 games and a handful of PS3 games are remote enabled....like BlazeBlue....
I use remote play ALL the time to play PS1 games without having to store them on my memory cards when I'm on the go....
I also use it to stream movies from my PC to my PS3 then to the PSP....helps a lot when wanting to watch a movie while on vacation because you can't find anything on TV and dont want to pay $15 to rent a movie.....
I don't have any issues with RemotePlay
@LANjackal I had a similar problem with my PS3 not finding my media server after I updated my firewall, blocking it PC side. Check "C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmpnetwk.exe" isn't blocked, and that connections are allowed from LAN LAN
Vista too? Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease :/
@DarkTwisted If your still using vista you should consider upgrading before doing anything else..
@DarkTwisted
Yeah Dark....Win 7 kicks Vista's butt.
I am still supporting Win 7 even though I will be a Mac Convert as of Monday.
Still putting Win 7 on there though. haha
@MoonWalkerCTE
Honestly Vista is pretty solid if you know about PC's its pretty much Windows 7 is Vista SP3. Almost everything done in 7 can be done in Vista. Had on release date and never had a problem.
Sony will be pushing out a new firmware update for the PS3 in 3.....2.....1.....
@stevensnewest
This cannot be fixed without adding a secure hardware chip into Sony laptops that is infeasable to dump.
One of the guys in that forum got it working n his mac too, might give it a go.
Yay, nice one! Not really very useful but I've wanted it anyway.
I have a Vaio and where could I get the software? I totally didn't know this was possible
@Eroded Fallacy
http://www.sony.com.au/article/396945
site down, or rather i cant get into it from Firefox
Oh what a shocker! Something that simply uses an application layer protocol and a superficial protection was made to work on another arbitrary device that is capable of transmitting any application layer protocol.
PC lock-ins will always fail, HARD. You can't do shit to PC users. Keep your proprietary shit on your proprietary devices.
@Kurian Amen to that!
And there goes yet another feature that sony will remove from the ps3. By years end we will be left with a box you turn on to provide heat with s slight breeze.
what exactly can remote play do?
Damn the HaxNetwork link is broken. I really wanted to do this. Haven't talked to my Socom buddies since summer semester started.
All I'm getting is database error from the source link, anyone else?
@Sicarius123 Ditto. Looks like we crushed their site. Hopefully they're up again soon.
That took them too long.
Very nice, works like butter on my dell vostro 1500. Its about time.
@slipdisc please send me the patch!!!! PLEASE
If anyone downloaded this patch before the site went down please reply to me...i have the remoteplay app and would love to test this baby out!
Is there another site with this information or a mirror of this page with the file to download?
The 'original' location (though I sent it to haxnetwork to have it a bit more 'public', seems they can't handle the load :) ) is at http://files.dotbas.net/VRPPatch.zip -- hope it won't go down like haxnetwork, heh.
@NTAuthority AWESOME!!!! Thanks!
@NTAuthority oh, and by the way: You Sir, freakin ROCK!
@NTAuthority Aah I didn't realise you read Engadget too! Hope you didn't mind me submitting but for me this was pretty freakin' big! Cheers again man :)
@NTAuthority it was only down for a short while and it can handle "the load".
add dvb-s to ps3 playtv.. i will buy it for £100
anybody else having problems with the program? everytime I try to run it right after inputting the 8 digit code it begins to search for the ps3 and it stops working and ends up shutting down.
@ShadowFoxBiH This seems to be some bug from Sony, one theory I have is you might have your wireless NIC set to a static IP address -- the PS3 provides a DHCP server in the PS3REGPC network, so you might need to set it to DHCP. :)
@NTAuthority
Thanks for the reply but my router is setup as DHCP, none of the IP's are static
Also double checked all the network settings for the wireless card, it is all set to DHCP
@ShadowFoxBiH Hey did you ever figure out how to get it to work? I am having the same problem.
@greatbam Setting up my brother in laws PSP with his PS3 was a pain in the arse for the same reason, took heaps of screwing around to work.
Both laptops I've set up this remote play have worked straight away though.
Just checking, you're trying to set up a machine with a wifi card of some kind yea? It wont go through the initial setup without one. After initial setup it'll work through your home network.
this works great. Very easy to install and get working, but can someone tell me what good this is? When I had a PSP I only used this feature like twice...and that was just to see what it did...never found a good use for it.
Website is down for me.
Can someone give me a link to instruct me to use this on a mac?
Works for me! Thank you NTAuthority!
http://www.haxnetwork.net/showthread.php?t=12267 anyone wanting help, should go to this link, the website seems to have a bad crash, or if you are used to irc, go to irc.ps3sanctuary.com #HaXNetwork, sorry for any inconvenience :(
I'd love for this to result in a good PS3 driver for the PC.
