Android 2.2 Froyo FRF85 now available for Nexus One (update: official)
We've been receiving numerous tips over the last hour that Nexus One owners on AT&T bands are receiving an over-the-air update for Android 2.2 FRF85, otherwise known as the "bulletproofed" Froyo build. No confirmation at this point, and since you're asking, no word yet either on an update for the larger T-Mobile N1 install base (though we've had at least one report of a user on FRF50 getting the OTA today). We've pinged Google for answers, will let ya know what we hear.
Update: Thanks to a few readers, we've now got a direct link from Google's servers to update from EPE54B to FRF85.
Update 2: Tipster Christian R has sent us a picture of his T-Mobile-banded Nexus One with FRF85, apparently updated from Android 2.1 build ERE27. Has the T-Mobile rollout begun? Not for us, at least.
Update 3: And now we've got a direct link to download a FRF85 build that'll supposedly work for any Android build. We can safely say that it worked for us on a T-Mobile device with 2.1 / ERE27. Download from Google here, and if you need direction on how to do the update yourself, take a cue from our commenters. [Thanks, MRCUR and afinite]
Update 4: And now it's official. Keep an eye on that notification bar if you're itching for the OTA method. So that's one phone down, quite a few to go! [Thanks, cl]

Uggg no Tmo love ever :(
@Bskballa92
lets go mytouch 3g slide................
@Bskballa92 this is a joke right?
@Bskballa92
The T-Mobile version got their update first if you did it manually.
@Bskballa92 I'm on TMO. I just did 'checkin'>reboot>update and it had 2.2 waiting for me. I'm coming from unrooted FRF50.
checkin>settings>about>check for updates
@Bskballa92 I got a T-Mobile OTA update for frf85b without checking... but I already had frf83 installed
@ppmcdoodles - If you ALREADY have Froyo installed, then yes, you'll get the OTAs.
@Bskballa92
Wanted to post this higher up so more people can benefit :
***************
GSM Nexus Owners (AT&T/Rogers/Telus etc.) can get it here :
http://android.clients.google.com/packages/passion/signed-passion-FRF85B-from-EPE54B.75b107d6.zip
Also, for those who do not know how to update manually:
Rename the downloaed file to update.zip
Put it at the root of your SD-Card and then turn off the phone.
Hold down the volume button and then press the power on button, it should go into a boot screen. Wait for a few seconds for it to load up proper and then select "Recovery" with the volume down/up button and press the power button.
Once you see an android holding a sign with an exclamation mark push volume down+ volume up + power button _at the same time_.
Select "apply sdcard:update.zip"(or something similiar) with the trackball and press it.
After the update is finished select "reboot system now" with the trackball and press it.
Wait for it to reboot, it can take a long time mind you.
You are welcome :)
@afinite
When restarting hold power and volume down holding up doesn't work.
@blindguymcsqueezy
Hold the vol- button and turn it on again.
Select Recovery. Try that.
@blindguymcsqueezy - Once you've booted into Recovery (which is the box with an Android coming out of it), you'll need to hold power and press volume UP to get the actual recovery menu options.
@Bskballa92
Actually I was one of the guys who sent in the news. I had manually installed FRF83 but got an OTA update FRF85B on a tmo nexus one. So the love is there, dont wont forget u anytime soon. :)
@afinite I'm stuck at the exclamation triangle with little android buddy scene. Nothing happen when I hold volume button and power button at the same time.
@aTh - Here's the trick: hold the power button and quickly press volume UP. Works for me every time.
@MRCUR When I select recovery, boot screen with the X come up, I press the volume up while holding power and the phone vibrate, then it back to the exclamation screen again.
This is on a non-rooted phone.
@afinite I keep getting "signature verification failed" any help? tried all naming conventions including and excluding the .zip. It just won't install.
@aTh - You need to wait for the recovery to actually load. You'll get to a screen (after the standard X startup screen) that shows a box with an Android outside of it. THAT is the screen to press power + volume UP on.
@afinite Hey I did everything like you mentioned. Its not installing.. it says in Installation aborted. Maybe because I'm not able to see root folder when I mount my SD Card.. any thoughts?
@tigertek - The "root" directory is NOT a folder, it's just the top level of the SD card. Make sure you rename the download to "update.zip" and plop it in the SD card root.
@MRCUR
I concur w/ MRCUR; press the power button AND THEN up. I got stuck on the recovery screen for ten minutes and was staring at the exlcamation point while I freaked out.
@afinite When you are at the exclamation point, you need to press Power first, then Volume Up.
@afinite
What about vzw motor Droid? Is it for that too? Would it work?
@afinite what about for us evo users? will this work?
@Bskballa92
This is the best Android news all day in day that had lots of great news. Second is how fast Sprint is patching the EVO (2nd OTA in 3 weeks?!) and the third is that the HD2 is now able to run Android: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/android-and-ubuntu-now-booting-on-htc-hd2/
@Bskballa92
I thought they stop selling nexus one after disappointing sales. No?
@afinite I wonder... What if I load my HTC Desire with this update?
For everyone asking about other devices - this is ONLY for Nexus Ones. This will NOT work for other devices.
Take a look at the downloads - they all have Passion in them, which is HTC's name for the N1.
@MRCUR One guy says "hold volume button down" and you say "hold volume button up". Which is it? ;)
If you'd rather do the OTA, You can also force a checkin manually by entering *#*#CHECKIN#*#* into your dialer (*#*#2432546#*#*). It will say checkin succeeded in the notification bar. It's not guaranteed to get you an update right away I don't think, but it might.
@Bskballa92
...damn my small wallet. if only it were larger i could be enjoying some froyo.
how about some engadget giveaway love, guys???
@afinite Is there any solution for us Moto Droid users?
(I know by "rooting" my Droid I could do it...but it kinda seems like a hassle.)
@Zodiac
No, they are going to stop selling it through the Google website soon, and sell it through retail & regional carrier channels instead.
@afinite - Nice!
Froyo downloaded and updated, also installed flash 10 from the Android Market Place. Now playing the Machinarium demo on an AT&T Nexus One (and holding it in the left hand too boot ;^) and, well, WOW! So what does it all mean? Android devices just leaped froged iDevices in the number of available games etc. by at least 5x! And before there is a chuckle about the quality of available flash titles on the web, suckle on this for a while: - http://machinarium.net/demo/ - You will be glad you did ;^p... The graphics for this game transferred well to the small screen. LOOKS AWESOME!
P.S. TODAY IS A GREAT DAY FOR COMPETITION!
@afinite I keep trying this and it keep telling me that file not found abort and kicks me back to 2.1. Do you have to be rooted for it to work?
@Frankenstein Black - Holy shatz, you can pinch zoom the flash games too? Man, so not getting any sleep tonight. Next up? Tube Galore ;^o... Just kidding ;^p...
PS The old 3gs in the other pocket is, well, looking old compared to a Froyo Roided N1! Kinda like comparing a new Porsche to an old Lambo Countach. Sayin...
@Zodiac
No. They're just trying to get them into retail stores before discontinuing online sales.
@afinite You having any issues with the build you pointed to? Codecs are no longer properly installed, can only seem to play cbr mp3 from this build. Also, the home screen is really unstable and frequently locks up for minutes at a time
@butcherchop - You use volume DOWN to get into the Fastboot menu, and then volume UP to get into the Recovery menu.
So, it's both.
@wifiguy89 - Make sure you didn't name the update.zip file "update.zip.zip". Keep in mind that Windows automatically hides file extensions.
@ppmcdoodles the checkin method does not work here in UK on my google direct N1
I'll just sit tight, im sure it will come soon.
If this is true, its pretty cool
@statickeith It is true, i've got it, it's amazing...
YAY!
So cool,,,but I want it too.
Its about time!!! :)
Looks like Nexus one owners are still receiving the love...wonder when all the other high-end phones will get some in return..
I recieved it on my unlocked stock 2.1 Nexus One in Canada at around 6:30 EST... one word: AWESOME.
@MrSquabbles If u can, post Some YouTube video please. Thanks. :)
@NextGen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRsetJ6M9eM
Just posted it real quick ... let me know if you want better quality, etc
Enjoy!
