Dell Streak available for purchase 'in late July,' says US product page
It's funny to think, even after reviewing the device (thrice, at this point), that we still don't have a US release date for Dell's Streak. The company's been uncharacteristically coy, but the stateside product page does offer this tantalizing tidbit: "available for purchase in late July." That gives us a good 10-day window, so if you've been eyeballing that pre-sale button with intent to click, now might be the time jump on the list.

Woohoo!

@FauxReal put 2.2 on it then sign me up
@FauxReal
Engadget's more recent review has me questioning whether I want it or not. I just want 2.2 so badly on it, and I'm not sure I can wait for it. I also wish they would make it more portrait-friendly and simplify the keyboard experience, as opposed to the complicated iteration currently available.
Other than that, sign me up!
@NuklearPanda
It will be ported sooner or later.
@FauxReal
a 5 inch tablet is stupid. ill pass.
Hey Dell wheres the Lightning, Thunder and Flash!
the forgotten hero's are hopefully alive!
@FauxReal
No thanks, the pixels per inch is crap. The pixels are easily visible. How can they make a hand-held with such low resolution in 2010?
@JS Orly?
iPhone 3GS: 164 PPI
iPad: 132 PPI
Dell Streak: 186 PPI
HTC Evo: 217 PPI
@bj55555
dell streak: android (meaning it looks ugly and hacked together)
iphone: not android
@bj55555
What about comparing to high end smartphones that came out this year (iPhone 4), I did say 2010 didn't I?
@FauxReal
I'm waiting for an unlocked price-drop, then sign me up. ;)
@MicrosoftOwns You're idiocy continues to annoy me.
I guess your godly Microsoft products aren't so much fun for you?
@JS The Evo's not a high-end smartphone that came out in 2010? It compares favorably to the Evo's pixel density (186 vs. 217), and it has almost 40% more display surface area than the Evo (11 sq in vs. 8 sq in). You can watch video without holding the thing so close to your face.
@Mr Oos Apparently only the home screen is portrait-only. Easily solved by downloading a different launcher app from the Market ("Launcher Pro", etc).
The keyboard is also easily replaceable with something else if you don't like Dell's keyboard - "SwiftKey", for instance.
Some things are trivially fixed by yourself because it's Android (in comparison, iPhone doesn't allow apps that modifies any built-in functionality). Other things are harder to fix because it's Android 1.6 (e.g. pinch-to-zoom GPS map).
@Ok I can't hold it in anymore I see you on every post about android I use to be a Wm addict from the tytn tytn2 touch pro tp2 HD xperia x1 then HD2. Give it up Wm is not hot anymore I understand you don't wanna let go just yet cause I dident at first but Android begins where Wm Ends and should have been and if you think for one second wp7 will bring back the OS its not. Its only going to bring the non tech people who want a simple iPhone like device witch will take away from what Wm has been known for a mobile computer in your pocket now android has that spotlight but android reshaped the mobile OS in a way it was user friendly out the box with tons of apps unlike Wm android thought about the tech people and public Wm just thought about the tech people up untill now with wp7 but in doing that they left out the tech people now with wp7 to Target the public there's no balance like android OS has and there you have it.MicrosoftOwns

@JS
Since... You can't see pixels on most computers right? OH NO, YOU CAN SEE THE PIXELS!!!
I knew the iPhone 4 would contort you irobots, in some way.
@JS its better than lugging that big ipad around when the iphone 4 is faster lol.... the nexus one is faster than the ipad lol
@FauxReal
Really? This thing is already old news.
@FauxReal
Where can I get this in Canada? And is it GSM to work with Bell?
@lyrik08
what is "thinking about the tech people?" does it mean make the user interface ugly and complicated like linux?
@bj55555
For all the reasons that you state, that is why the Streak makes you look ridiculous when you use it as a phone. For tablet use you don't look like ridiculous.
@big nazty
Faster but cruder is not better. The Droid X is very fast. But all that UI animation and movement where things appear from all directions is very distracting to say the least.
Plus 2 major problems with Android so far are it's lack of capability as a gaming platform. I can bet the iPad or even iPhone will blow this thing away and the lack of a decent media player. Crappy flash performance can't make up for the lack of integration with a store like iTunes, or apps like Hulu and Netflix. Not just that, but the media player interface just isn't as elegant as the iPod.
Android devices are good for one thing only and that is as a web browser. If you want a web browser, then this is a great product. Although, the way the Safari browser fits content on the iPad is awesome.
So speed isn't everything if the UI isn't up to mark and the apps are not as well implemented.
I can see the odd ball techie buy this. Outside of that, products like the EVO and Droid X are much more compelling.
@MicrosoftOwns
Nah, that's not why. You'll pass because you're stupid for living in la`la land that Windows 7 Mobile is going to magically outdo Android (or iOS for that matter). Funny.
@bj55555 did you include iPhone 326ppi*?

I know you are scared of sources but vet me anyway. Little boys I tell ya.
@jaffreywali don't forget but the first official hulu app announcement for any platform was for a Dell phone running android that will come out in the fall. Though the iphone beat them to it, there are very clear trade offs, and I see your point. But remember that they're all good phones(OS's), And their differences will continue to blur
@bj55555
Nexus One 267 ppi
HTC Droid Incredible 252 ppi
Motorola Droid 264 ppi
Motorola Droid X 228 ppi
This is the one that surpised me the most...
Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S) 326 ppi
Just in case people wanted to know the other competition not that it matters all that much.
@angermeans Wow, do I feel dumb. This is why we need an "Edit" button.
Samsung Captivate 260 ppi
@FauxReal
Sign yourself up! I'm not a part of your posse!
@lyrik08 Ever heard of punctuation, sentences and paragraphs?
How well do you think it will sell guy?
@Clinton O
I don't think it's going to sell too well because the pinnacle of the hype around this device was back in like Q1 or Q2 of 2010 and then they launched in only one country.... which soured many. Add the release of other Android devices to choose from (although mostly CDMA) and the lack of communication from Dell and you have a not so stellar product launch.
The only thing saving the product is the screen size and the fact that it's the only other GSM Android device worth talking about aside from the Samsung Captivate, especially since the Nexus One is now not available through Google.
@Clinton O
This is certainly going to be a niche product. EVO/Droid X are already too big for many people. The screen size is certainly useful, but they should consider releasing it as a pure tablet. then it might have more appeal.
@Clinton O They are too late. The peoples money were spent on other phones already. I'm afraid it might not sell well. I hope I'm wrong since I like Android to be more popular.
@Clinton O Hey PAL dont call me GUY.
@FrankDTanIM NOT YOUR GUY FRIEND!!!
@Plazmic Flame If you want something on AT&T this is pretty much it. I know there are some AT&T compatible Nexus Ones out there, but I don't think you can get your hands on one anymore. So if you want a "serious" Android phone on AT&T, there aren't many options afaik.
I did hear that the Samsung Galaxy S might be available on all carriers, though.
@Plazmic Flame Agreed, this was my next phone until Dell took aeons to release this thing. I ended up buying an iPhone 4, and I'm pretty happy with it. I can't wait to see what some of those leaked Dell phones look like though, thunder, lightning, etc...Those might turn some heads.
@ashwinkn
I think the sweet spot for these devices has yet to be settled on, but the trend is toward bigger regardless. Even a device as sleek as the iPhone 4 gets bulky with its mandatory case; when I saw my buddy's in his case, I couldn't believe how close in size it was to my naked Evo (which can actually be used naked). So I don't know how long the "it's too big" thing is going to fly.
I wasn't expecting it to come out in the states until it was already outdated with the speed the phone market had been developing at
Me 2
Will it be able to run Froyo?
@Gayguywhohappenstolikegadgets
It's been promised in a future update, but currently runs Android 1.6
@Gayguywhohappenstolikegadgets Dell says over the air update coming in Sept for 2.2 and then 3.0 at end of year. We'll see....
@Gayguywhohappenstolikegadgets - not initially, but maybe that is the delay?
Also, WHO is this for? There are two versions for both att and tmo. I am sure this is likely goign to att specifically.. but!... since there is a tmobile version, where is it?
att&t no thanks make it both bands and we can talk
'No one's going to buy a big phone'
@shoman24v
*Looks at Droid x numbers*
Sorry Steve.
No T-mobile support...forget it !
