Gmail evolves a new drag-and-drop file saving function
Yeah, yeah, you've been dragging and dropping attachments into your emails since primordial times, but how about being able to drag files out of a message and onto your desktop? That's just the thing that Google has recently added to Gmail, courtesy of its Chrome-tastic browser. You can now snatch those pics your grandkids sent along and easily deposit them into your folder of choice without ever having to see so much as a pop-up prompt or additional menu. We like it very much and hope users of other browsers aren't out in the cold for too long either.

This is why I use Chrome and Gmail.
@SlimSpaceman
You have been using Chrome and Gmail for a feature which has not been there until today?
@jtm33 Exactly.
lol but yea, for features like this, and sheer awesomeness of course!
@SlimSpaceman
Haha, I agree though. I have been using Gmail since the beta and have no desire to change.
@jtm33 No, because chrome was always awesome, and gmail was always awesome, and now this is one more feature, however, I only check email on my iPhone and use family computer once in a while, but I have a good experience when I do
@jtm33: "I have been using Gmail since the beta..."
Well, it was in beta for half a decade. ;-)
@meeku
Oh right... I mean the invite only part of the beta.
@That guy 2
You use a Family Computer to check your e-mail?
@Engrudget Let's just hope it's his own family's computer he's using.
Just.... like... Outlook...2005?
@bleep or windows explorer?
@bleep I don't even think OWA can do this right now. Quit comparing desktop apps to web apps, unless you just like coming off a pedantic.
@revlayle argh! The suspense is killing me! A pedantic what? Aieeeeeeeeee!
@bleep
Kk, don't acknowledge the accomplishment of browser progress, less just compare it to client side operations.
@revlayle
Yes I agree web apps are generally in no way comparable to desktop apps.
@barkotron
It's called a noun.
@bleep
Actually pedant is the noun :p
@bleep I don't think there was an Outlook 2005. Do you mean 2003? Or 2007? Or maybe Outlook 95?
@barkotron so the suspense is killing
@revlayle
Is killing whom? Ahh, the suspense again!
@Larz
Lol :)
@revlayle He is, because some people actually think web apps are enough.
This must have just been activated, as I had to refresh my Gmail page to get this to work - lol
There's a reason that isn't possible for most browsers, and that's security. Normally you can only copy text to the clipboard.
Unless Google found out a way to make it secure. If that's the case, other browsers needs to get this as well!
@mboudreau maybe an HTML5 thing?
@mboudreau I believe this is done with HTML5 code. I know that the drag and drop IN email is done that way.
So I doubt they use the clipboard trick.
Google rocks!
@Stealthhawk007 Just chrome, gmail, and google.com though!
@That guy 2
I love Google phone running on android, google maps, google mail, google earth, google chrome, google chrome OS (coming soon) and I like how all these integrate within each other.
Chrome, an extension of the desktop experience.
While I know it is no Windows 7 replacement, makes me wonder what tricks Chrome OS will have.
Now for an instant-on Chromium-Book ! For even more awesomeness.
Doesn't work with the beta version (build 5.0.375.125).
@Engrudget that version is not beta anymore, it is stable. Also, I am running that build, and I had to F5 refresh the gmail page to get it that update to activate.
Zimbra and IE or a plugin for Firefox. Been there, seen this, done that.
Next?
"Security hole? *what* security hole?"
I would like to go to Hawaii next week. Can I drag that itinerary to my desktop?
I just dragged a file and put it into a folder opened on windows explorer, not on desktop.
I remember paying $1.99 on ebay to get a GMAIL account. It was all worth it.
Works on Linux :)
Now if only you could attach a file that way, drag from the desktop and into the email.
Nice Google
I don't read the gmail blog (can't read everything), so thanks engadget
why is this article alt?
This has definitely been available using Exchange webmail (Outlook Web Access or OWA) feature with Internet Explorer since Exchange 2003. It also works under Exchange 2007 and there's no reason not to think it's on Exchange 2010. I just tested using Exchange 2003 and 2007 because I have an account on each.
But when Google does it with GMail and Chrome, it's new and newsworthy. Please...
@Synth80s
I just tested this on my Exchange 2007 account with OWA in IE8 and drag-and-drop did not work. Then I saw your post. I will have to ask our Admin if that feature needs to be enabled.
@everyone
I tested Gmail on chrome and IE8 and the drag-and-drop works in BOTH browsers, both ways.
the article makes it sound like it will only work in Chrome, but it works in both.
