Apple Peel 520 gets reviewed: turns your iPod touch into an iPhone, but quirks exist
No one expressly said that the Apple Peel 520 would change your life, but if you play your cards right, that's not entirely out of the question. The mysterious doodad -- which wraps around your iPod touch and holds an extended battery and SIM card -- has caused quite the stir since being revealed late last month, and now it has undergone a full review overseas. Put simply, the device does work as advertised, turning one's iPod touch into a device fully capable of making / receiving calls as well as texts. 'Course, you'll need to jailbreak your device first, and you'll have to deal with a static (read: impossible to adjust) call volume, quirky SMS delivery and blanked messages for missed calls, but hey -- a small price to pay for the upgrade, right? Hit the source link for the full skinny and a video to boot.

Does anyone else find it funny that the solution is always to put a case on an Apple Product? I love my Apple products, but sometimes I wish they didn't all need cases for phone calls... not that I use an iPhone anyways. No thank you, AT&T. Maybe when an Apple product with Verizon service gets released in my next life.
This Changes Everything... Seriously!
@DaHarder
Hey... What's That Sound?
All those iPod Touch owners who want nothing to do with AT&T Collectively Cheering!
@lol android is so ugly
...But I'm Obviously Part of an Engadget Majority That's Completely Fed Up With YOU.
@DaHarder:
Yes He Is. We All Capitalize Each Word.
@DaHarder
Until next month when the new iPod Touch is out with fresh design, hehehe!
@Kirtay
... only when I'm pretty much at My Wits End - ;-)
@DaHarder
Hehe, yeah.
I know what you mean, though - AT&T can be frustrating, especially where it matters a lot - eg. New York.
But it's fine in many places (eg. Florida), so the other guy has a point as well.
@Almo
Come On Now... Based on the design evolution of the iPod Touch, the next generation probably won't change dramatically in shape/size.
Even if it does change somewhat, there's still a user-base of millions who own iPod Touch versions that will fit the PEEL 520 perfectly.
@Almo The whole point of this is for existing iPod touch users to buy something cheap that'll transform their iPod to an unlocked gsm world phone. If you just wanted to buy a phone from the get go, you can just buy an iPhone 4 and unlock it. I don't think many people are waiting to buy a new iPod touch to turn them into phones.
@Kirtay
Gotta love the typical New York attitude there. NY is the only city in the world that matters.
In Soviet Russia, iPod Call YOU
yo dawg, i heard you like soviet russia jokes, so i named myself soviets and went on the webz so you could have Soviets soviet russia jokes while you engadet
@Psyclotr0n That was a poor attempt at an Xxibit meme joke
@Bob the Terrorist
Yakov Smirnoff Joke

And still rates it as the best device in the industry. Go Figure.
@lol android is so ugly
Hoho buying a case for your iPod touch gives it the same functionality as the iPhone :D
Nearly there, I'm sure you'll get it eventually ;)

A Persistent TROLL Is Still A TROLL!
i was looking forward to this, a Nexus One with a calling iPod touch is a good combination to have
at least until that Galaxy S MID comes out
@d0mth0ma5
Well iphone sales have been slowing...
@lol android is so ugly This is making an iPOD into and iPhone. This is not iPhone 4.
@aopolis *iPod LOL
@lol android is so ugly
won't it be cheaper and better to just buy an Iphone and jailbreak it?
@Roger Moore no...unless u want to pay for a 2 year contract(over $2000)
@Matt314 Products do tend to decline. Plus in the UK (and many other countries) they were still sold out until very recently. I think o2 are still only selling them to existing customers.
Whats with the trend of having to put a case on iDevices to make them work as phones?
@Jordus
ZING!
@Jordus Lol yeeeaahh.... although this is something that I always hoped would come out. Hopefully they'll make it better, and with a camera slot just incase the next touch has one (although doubtful).
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this article is about the ipod touch, right? Why is everyone talking about the iphone 4? Oh right, Apple screwed up once so that means all of their other products deserve to be mentioned with the iphone 4. Makes sense.
@Brt312
Lol so true, people just can't learn.
@Brt312 Apple has screwed up b4 but certainly not with the iPhone 4. Anyone who complains about it doesn't own one. I know at least a dozen people with it and none can make it lose signal with this bs antenna gait... Entirely fabricated by engadget.
@LordThree You're in denial and probably somewhat blinded by the RDF.
If it allows you to have service and hold it anyway u want that kicks ass. Actually that's cool ill have to tell my buddy who has an itouch.
I know this has nothing to do with the post but I wonder if Apple will make a white version of the next iPod touch.
@Maxipad
Not Likely... I hope that helps.
@DaHarder Oh well, then I'll have to choose between the iPhone 4 and the next iPod touch.
@lol android is so ugly Why even comment?, your wasting everybody's time talking about the iphone 4 when this post is about the ipod touch. Go troll somewhere else.
Thanks for sharing, that helps me a lot.

@ronaguo
hey spammer, you forgot to spam your website like you spammed in your other 3 spam comments you spammed here so far

I realize I'm replying to a troll, but people need to understand what Consumer Reports' ratings mean. "Recommended" is their seal of approval, and not every product gets it. When they don't give a product the "recommended" rating, it does NOT mean "not recommended". They actually have a scarlet letter "Do not buy" rating. So in other words, the 3 levels of ratings mean "you can buy this without worries", "consider some issues before you purchase", and "do not purchase at all".
@Nishanth You deserve a prize for being one of the only intelligence people to comment on this.

Apple blatantly steals and tries to patent other people's ideas, engadget doesn't report it at prime time (actually, they never report it):
http://www.futuretap.com/blog/the-patent-case-we-havent-called/
It'll be sweet if it work with iPod Touch 4!
if only there was a phone that had expandable storage, making the one advantage of owning a standalone iphone without phone moot
oh wait...
@JS
They didn't steal anything, go read the patent yourself, they were simply refering to their app as an example of the technology they wish to patent. Nothing to do with the app itself, it's a mere sample along with another Sudoku app and others. Sorry to burst your bubble.
@Roger Moore
59 for apple peel + 200 for ipod touch.
Let me know where you can get an iphone for 259 off contract, please.
@JS
On the surface that looks really terrible but I would have to see the details of the patent to know if it's as bad as it looks.
