Redsn0w jailbreak works with iOS 4.0.2... on your iPhone 3G
This isn't going to do you iPhone 4 types much good yet, but it's interesting to note that the current version of redsn0w apparently works like a champ for jailbreaking your old iPhone 3G (yes -- 3G -- not 3GS) along with second-generation iPod touches running iOS 4.0.2. As we now know, 4.0.2 materialized for the sole purpose of patching up the PDF exploit that allowed JailbreakMe to do its thing, so it's kind of funny to see that redsn0w is still able to do its thing unhindered... just not on the devices most of us care about. Keep on keepin' on, Dev Team.

I not upgrading at all until Apple fixes iOS 4 for the 3G. The lag makes me wanna tear my eyes out.
@Rusty Shackleford *I'm for you grammar nazis ^_^
@Rusty Shackleford Lol, you grammar Nazi-ed yourself.
@Rusty Shackleford LOL!!.. They release a 300MB patch to fix a freakin PDF exploit and it doesnt even fix it.
Apple operating systems are SO secure. LMAO
@Jordus You're an idiot. redsn0w doesn't apply the jailbreak through the PDF exploit.
@Rusty Shackleford
Mine is gonna go the way of my old Samsung...
http://i33.tinypic.com/20h9f0z.jpg
The way of the hammer.
@Jordus
It IS fixed. Redsn0w just works differently,,
Maybe you need to be patched..
@Rusty Shackleford I dont care. i need my iPhone. I dont care.
ZZZAAAOOOZZZAAA !!!!!!
@Jordus You sir, are an idiot of the largest calibre. The patch fixes the PDF exploit, Redsn0w doesn't use the PDF exploit to jailbreak, its done in boot. Which is why it still works for the 3G.
@Rusty Shackleford
The 3G lag problem is caused by spotlight. Turn off all spotlight indexes and you will be much faster. Even works on 3GS.
@Rusty Shackleford Well, I wouldn't want an iPhone if I can't have the latest and greatest. I also wouldn't want to have a crappy signal even with a femtocell. Did anyone notice the photo?
@mKTank Jordus was talking about JailBreakMe 2.0
@Rustymetal Does the indexing catch up at any point if you just leave it alone for a bit? Because I've held off on upgrading because of this.
@Rusty Shackleford The real question is, is why the bars are so low even though it's using a Microcell...
@Rusty Shackleford Does it really make the icons crooked?
Wonder how many people have already switched from the 3g, other day at school, i saw a guy with a 3g who had jailbroken it for all the features, and god damn...... just to put the 4 letter password, it would have a 2 second delay
@Hell Angel
Yea, it's pretty bad. I did a restore of my old 3G, only time that it ran well was when I first opened it and it didn't have anything on it. Just Cydia, haha.
If you _are_ jailbroken on an iPhone 3G, it doesnt make sense to upgrade to 4.0.2 anyway, so the point is moot.
@sushovande Your point is moot... so is mine :(
@aznipredroid
his point was not moot, it was advice relating to an issue that has an impact on 3G owners. your point is not moot either, it was just pointless. My point is neither moot nor pointless as it's explaining the difference between being moot and pointless, which is that being moot is to do with irrelevance to an issue that's already decided whereas pointlessness is to do with having no valuable information at all.
@safe travels Are you an idiot or just really smart? My comment was supposed to not make sense/be silly. Go play judge and jury some where else.
Or continue to define "words" in a forum (which is rather moot... I mean pointless). Though the difference in this dumb back and forth is moot.
Magical.
@chrismgallen
is it me or are the settings and calculator icons a wee bit crooked?
@iroq d mullet must've been in icon move mode.
also, there must be a better way of saying icon move mode...
@iroq d mullet
I was just noticing this my self dude.. Wtfx0r? They be fux0rin my vision!

Fuck yes!
"As we now know, 4.0.2 materialized for the sole purpose of patching up the PDF exploit that allowed JailbreakMe to do its thing, so it's kind of funny to see that redsn0w is still able to do its thing unhindered.."
Well, it's not like jailbreaking is hurting Apple, I think it brings more consumers in fact.. And if anything goes wrong, it's not Apple's fault.
@jayjaync Um, its not Apples fault even if you arent jailbroken, apparently.
Remember how they tried to play off their broken antennae by pretending other phones do it, too? LOL
@Jordus Yeah, I was kind of implying that in my comment ^^
@jayjaync
This kind of jailbreak exploit is a LEGIT threat to innocent people. Thats why they released 4.0.2 when 4.1 is planned and in beta. But they did not bother to fix 3.1.3's USB based exploit with a minor version for MONTHS.
@Kurian
Yeah,
they needed to fix the PDF exploit because it could be used at the detriment of the user, making JailbreakMe unusable in the process.
But I don't think it was to make JailbreakMe unusable that they fixed it, or else redsn0w and co. would have been countered long ago.
@Jordus well you are wrong because all phones do it. Some phones even ship out with stickers telling you where not to touch, or have it saying in the phones manuals. There's even YouTube videos of an incredible being effected by the death grip. So apple didn't try to play anything off. Consumer reports failed miserable with attacking apple when this antenna problem is with every phone. Me personally? No problems with holding the phone lefty (being lefty it's always used in my left hand) and when trying the death grip on purpose had no effect on my iPhone 4.
This article is stupid, its untrue, unresearched, and leads to ignorant trolling...know the facts before you open your mouth. When Jobs called out RIMs 9700 RIM responded that they didn't agree with being called out by apple and RIMs only defense was "our return rates were smaller". Didn't even deny the antenna issue. Which confirms apple was correct.
@Gregtotheizzo Sorry Steve, we're not falling for it.
Is there anyone who tried out the new ios 4.0.2 update on their iphone 3g? I'm willing to undo my jailbreak if they finally got rid of the horrible lag.
Its not strange, those devices are "pwned" for life, which means that the apple cant patch the exploit they found. Its injected at a much earlier stage in the boot process than the pdf-exploit.
they are my heroes. when i grow up, I want to be just like them.
That screen shot isn't even 4.0.2. Look at the bars.
@thekingg yep
@thekingg Doesn't really need to be... we just threw it in as an example of a jailbroken device.
@Chris Ziegler The point was you couldn't even take the time to press lock and home on a device to make the picture somewhat relevant? Besides inaccurate information and it being poorly written, the image didn't serve this article justice.
At least someone cares about the "Legacy" iPhones
Is it just me or is it a bit weird that the source of this bit of iPhone news is redmond pie?
What is the point of upgrading on either device? There are no new features...it's not hard folks, just click no when it pops up. Or, or, you can just check the box that says, "don't ask me again" and then click no. Yea, I know pretty neat stuff.
@EagleyeSmith
The point of updating, at least when you jailbreak, is that you can enable the new features easily. When you use RedSn0w, you just need to check the boxes for the features you want that are not enabled for these older devices (multitasking, backgrounds, etc.) I have a touch 2G and only jailbroke it to have the native multitasking. I know you can do the same thing better through Cydia but the native method is neater and simpler.
@st26359
I'm not saying that they're is nothing wrong w/updating, when you have a jailbreak. But w/Apples 4.0.2 upgrade, it doesn't bring anything new to the table, nothing that you can't get on 4.0.1, which you clearly can jailbreak. I just feel that it's just, again, pointless for anyone to update to 4.0.2 when it doesn't do anything. Hell, I'm not even planning on updating to 4.1.
@EagleyeSmith There's a huge difference between 4.1 and 4.0.1/.2....4.1 will contain battery fixes, sometimes proximity sensor fixes...other performance tweaks. It'll also enable gamecenter...where as 4.0.1 was the signal bars .png and 4.0.2 PDF fix...
It is safe to say that I'm the only one who caught the Dimebag Darrell reference. Pantera fucking rocks. Someone give me a cookie immediately.
Haha I did this last night to my gfs iPod touch. Worked like a charm. I guess some of us keep our old devices Engadget :p.
I jail broke my iPad wi-fi with jailbreakme and now my wi-fi signal indicator in the corner is gone but I'm still connected and all the services that gather my location don't work. Like maps and Twitter can no longer use my location. I'm still glad i did it though. Backgrounding and free apps without having to wait for iOS 4.2 for iPad.
@techfreak23
hmm, the same with you, Im glad I did the jailbroken.
Now Im so happy that I installed flash on my jailbroken iPad, Which let me can enjoy movies from Hulu and YouTube freewheelingly, though I got an iPad video Converter from ifunia, that only make sense when I travel and have not much data. and also got many other apps. I can play many cool games as wish.
