Windows Phone 7 leak mania continues with new Samsung prototype
Better bring an umbrella if you're going out, because the Windows Phone 7 hardware leaks are really starting to rain down. We've so far peeked pre-release handsets from ASUS, HTC (twice), and LG, and now Samsung is pitching in with what looks like a device fated to dance on retail shelves. Details are, as usual, scarce on the ground, but the angular aesthetics suggest it isn't the AT&T-bound Cetus that recently graced the FCC. Taken together with the physical separation of the Windows-branded Start key, however, they do rather resemble what we've seen on ASUS' hardware, which might suggest that there is some undercurrent of cohesive body design that Microsoft is pushing out to its hardware partners. Or maybe we're just grasping at straws to kill the time until this OS finally launches. One more pic after the break.

Jason! My Fav Contact...
@Sr1n1
The reincarnation of the HTC Touch Diamond.
Just beautiful.
If it's S-AMOLED, I'm sold.
@Sr1n1
I am so not sold on WP7 yet. I don't understand how a seemingly infinite single line of apps that has tiny little tiles has better usability than either Android or iOS.
@Revolutionary It's some sort of OLED. The blacks on the screen are darker than the bezel surrounding it, lol!
@Sr1n1 This design IMHO isn't as good as other leaked WP7 phones. It looks very "usual"
I never noticed before how the tiles overlap the battery indicator (second pic) that's definitely not beautiful I hope they clean it up!
@brnkcv Same here. I like the leaks so far, but I'm not into wp7. Maybe testing it out, when it ships will change my mind.
@Sr1n1 I'm cracking everytime i see that jason today.... this should be done more frequently lol
@Revolutionary pocketnow says that it looks like a regular AMOLED screen. I'm hoping they go with SUPER, otherwise not my cup of tea. It does look better than the HTC leaks though...
@Revolutionary yup that looks like S-AMOLED alright ,look how black the blacks are ! S-AMOLED + windows phone 7 = new generation of smartphones
@Sr1n1
If you don't like the lists of apps you could always use the "Open *App*" voice command by holding down the start key. It really comes down to choice and preference. Thank god we have plenty of choice.
I don't necessarily think that a grid of icons is the ultimate mobile user interface it's just took what people thought worked on a PC and shrunk it down. At some point you have so many apps that you still end up swiping through multiple pages of icons (even if they are in a grid) or down one really long page. So either don't put a lot of apps on your phone or learn to use voice or search to open apps.
@johnvillar at least ever Friday the 13th!
@Sr1n1
What is the 'me' button for...?
Ah I know it! It starts up the front-facing camera!
THAT IS YOU!!!
fail.
@Sr1n1
The ultimate Fat Finger device...look at the size of those tiles!
@Revolutionary Does anyone realize the "Games" hub? This is my first time seeing this on the Start screen.
@Revolutionary
Yep, looks like it will be very easy to skin too! Even though most find it stupid, I like skinning my phones haha
@Odog4ever
I want to like WP7 but I'm starting to think that it won't deliver in UI innovation. I'm still excited for it though.
@The Dark Knight
I think it will be nice for something different, but after staring at that UI for the past couple months... it feels the novelty of it has worn off on me already.
@brnkcv
Because part of the idea behind it is that you're getting away from the wall of apps that android and iOS have. Instead you get the functionality added in the separate hubs.
@The Dark Knight How so? IMO WP7 has already delivered in terms of UI innovation; there's not many areas in which it tries to emulate the navigation and interaction of other UI's. It completely surprised me how it performs, as well as Engadget themselves when they took a look at it and played with it.
@Revolutionary It's pretty =3
@N900
It is the Xbox Live hub but it was in the middle of an animation so it looks different.
@brnkcv
The line of apps you speak of is completely customisable, update themselves and display notifications. If you want to access your apps, there is a list for that, too.
@brnkcv the hub organization concept is unique and incredible compared to other OSs loads of shortcuts...
If this is 3.9" + and Super AMOLED, consider me sold.
I'am sure they'll have have an all app menu
But this is a a lot neater, I don't know anyone
that needs their 100 apps every day, The stuff
you use every day you can put on the main page
KI-KI-KI-KI MA-MA-MA-MA
@Sr1n1 I keep forgetting it's Friday the 13th. It's my sister's birthday. Hope she's OK...
@Firehazel
The OS on those Screens seems to be a bit different to the former versions I saw.
Pretty dissappointed with HTC's offering so far. Samsung and Dell its going to be between you two guys.
@Sr1n1
This is where it's at. Absolutely gorgeous.
WANT
@brnkcv Play around with a zune and you might get an idea for how cool it is.
@Sr1n1
very nice hardware looks extremley similar to a zune :-)
@Sr1n1 I think I'll like WP7 but this hardware isn't blowing a lot of wind up my skirt.
I want THIN
I want a BIG screen
I want SMALL borders/bezel
IT'S JASON!
QUICK, PRESS X BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!
@Ahmedz
He's been coming up on every other post, its obviously some insider joke. DO I WIN A PRIZE?
@Spaldinggreat
Yes, you win a trophy for being oblivious!
Can't you tell me the day of the week as well as the day of the month? I hope you can figure it out.
@Spaldinggreat
Hint, Hint....
What is today?
@Ahmedz How am I supposed to call Jason if I don't have a SIM card installed? Geesh.
Ohhh, nice. But why do they need to have a center button when all the other buttons are capacitive? It kills the cohesion, for me.
@HowardtheDuck
People tend to bitch about way too much on this site.
I get that we're all entitled to our opinions and all but seriously?
@HowardtheDuck the haptic feedback on the captivate/vibrant is pretty decent and makes the touch buttons pretty usable , But I agree though nothing beats real buttons but at least the home button looks like a real button so it's not all bad.
@Rem DX
I'd say HowardtheDuck is making a legitimate criticism, not just trolling and complaining. Like most of us tech geeks, we're into this stuff, and the small details matter. Another area of critique, for me, is with the use of screen real estate. WP7 UI looks like it needs the right hand side of the screen open in order to hint at more content to the right, and until I actually use the OS and am convinced otherwise, it seems like a misuse of valuable space. My 2 cents for now, and I look forward to hopefully be proven wrong. Peace.
The earlier prototype looks much nice and more like a phone!
@Sr1n1
Yeah it doesn't look like a phone, because it's a smartphone.
Im really starting to wonder what the differentiating factor would be with these Handsets.... Different Design is one thing but still..
Just a thought... I think if it comes down to Branding HTC will win out. Its pretty funny hearing the laymen talk about "Ohh HTC Phones are really nice" lol . . .the name is getting strong
@ComboBreaker
HTC on design... Samsung for using Super AMOLED screens.
All other manufactures can compete for 3rd+ places.
@ComboBreaker
Differentiating factors? Well so far we've seen two handsets with physical keyboards (the LG Panther and Dell Lightning)- one's a portrait slider and the other's a landscape one. We've seen a few slates. Then there's the actual materials used (type of screen, camera(s), etc). This one and the ASUS look similar, sure, but look the other three are all quite different.
These phones look so dull compared to the Dell Lightning.
@XChrisX
Kinda weird when you say that when considering the lighting in that picture, it looks a lot like the Dell Lightning.
