Magic: The Gathering taps XBLA for 500K sales

Stainless Games, purveyor of the magical duels sim Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers has announced that the title has sold half a million (digital) copies on Xbox Live Arcade. First released in June 2009, Duels of the Planeswalkers crossed the 500K mark at some point last week.

It's worth noting that this figure only applies to the XBLA release. Factor in the PC and PSN versions of Duels that were released last year and Stainless is probably tapping an awful lot of mana out there.

Duels of the Planeswalkers hits the 500,000 mark on XBLA

28th Jan 2011 - Sales of the XBox LIVE Arcade title, Magic:The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers, reached another epic milestone last week, topping 500,000 sales of the base game.

Developed by UK-based Stainless Games and published by Wizards of the Coast LLC, the game has spawned a slew of expansions and add-ons, making it one of the most successful games on that platform.

Said Patrick Buckland, CEO of Stainless Games, "Breaking the half million barrier with Duels on XBLA is a fantastic way for us to start 2011. We'd like to thank Wizards for all the great support they've shown us on the project, and of course all the Magic fans, old and new alike, who have bought the game."

Already available on XBLA and PC via Steam, Duels of the Planeswalkers was also recently released on Sony PS3 PSN worldwide, and a dedicated Magic: The Gathering-themed PS3 Home Space is to follow shortly.

Europe's leading console download studio, Stainless Games has developed over 25 Download SKUs to date - including the No 1 XBLA Electronic Arts 2010 hit, Risk:Factions - with others currently in production.

Said Matt Edmunds, Stainless's COO, "Our strategy of concentrating on Console Download early is really paying off, with all the major corporate players now agreeing that 2011 will be the Year of the Download. With our multi-platform technology, we'll be hoping to emulate the success of Duels for other brands on everything from an iPhone to a high-end PC and keep up our track record of at least one No1 per year!"
