Jukebox Heroes: Reader requests 2

Jukebox Heroes Reader requests 2

It's been far too long -- going on 10 months now, in fact -- since we last had a reader request week here on Jukebox Heroes. My bad! I'll try to do these a little more often from now on. The idea here is to take all of your comments from previous columns, sift them for "oh man, why didn't you include [name of tune]? That's the best!" mentions, and compile a few of them to share with everyone. After all, I'm certainly not the beginning, middle, and end of taste in MMO music.

So here we go with several reader requests over the past year, covering a wide span of MMO scores. There's bound to be a few good listens in here, so give them all a try and let me know which of your favorite tracks we should cover in part 3!

1. Anarchy Online: Tir

Equillian writes, "Best soundtrack ever. My favorite is the Tir Theme. Back when everyone sat at the Tir Fair Trade Tents... *sigh* I miss those days."

2. World of Warcraft: Lament of the Highborn

Several folks piped up to suggest this track. "No Burning Crusade list is complete without it," Lenn said. Zoward agreed: "This is the last tune on TBC soundtrack, and my personal favorite on the album."

3. Dark Age of Camelot: Ambient music

Anubis recommended this tune: "This game's ambient music is absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately, none of the mixes I've seen on YouTube rarely ever seems to get the right sound (I think it's an issue of layering. Most of the videos I've seen do each sample individually while I'm pretty sure there is some layering going on in-game.). I've always loved the acoustic bit that this video starts with."

4. Star Trek Online: Klingon Battle Theme

Queetz defended the score of this game: "I don't understand why players dislike the STO music; I think its very well done. And having the theme from the TOS Episode, Amok Time, definitely made that particular mission, Coliseum, the most immersive in the game. You can't get any more Star Trek than that."

5. Age of Conan: Login music

It's time for a mystery track! See if you can solve it. "There is a login menu song that only appears once in a while," Loopstah wrote. "It doesn't seem to be on the OST (I have the bonus disc as well). Nobody can tell me its name. It is my favourite song from AoC, by far."

6. Granado Espada: Involute

Azzura said this piece captivated him: "When I tried the game for the first time, they sent me off to the tutorial zone and played this song for my fight music. I had to search out the OST. There are like 125 songs in the OST, and like Justin said... they are all over the place in genres."

7. Final Fantasy XI: Anxiety

We'll end it today with this track from Khalusakuhei, but fret not -- we'll do another one of these again soon!

"Oh gosh, where do I start?" he wrote. "I love every track from FFXI, own every DVD, and listen to them regularly in my car using a USB stick. One of my favorites is Anxiety, used during most of the main storyline cutscenes."

MMOs aren't just about looks; they also have great soundtracks that often go unnoticed. Heroes don't stand for that! Every Tuesday, Jukebox Heroes will check out a game's soundtrack and feature the best tunes to share and discuss. Your DJ for the hour is Justin Olivetti, and the request line is open!
